1 out of 5 eggs

Cons: when not crashing

Other Thoughts: have to lov it when they tell you to ship the card to them so you have to wait 3 weeks plus to run your computer

1 out of 5 eggsIf it doesn't crash it's great

Pros: It's great when it isn't crashing.

Cons: While playing games this card has a tendency to flash randomly coloured bars across the entire screen usually leading to the game crashing and sometimes a computer crash/restart/BSOD. This appears to be completely random as it happens while the card is at various temperatures while playing many different games with different amounts of background applications. I have tried absolutely everything to fix this and was able to by using an older Radeon HD6870 and by trying out a friend's 7970 from a different manufacturer. Placing the card in a different machine also caused the crashing issues.

Other Thoughts: I contacted XFX customer support and was issued a RMA and carried it out. Upon their testing they could not recreate the issues and mailed back the card. After everything I have done (many months trying to fix the issue) I cannot see any other thing being the problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Bacon, we are always happy to help revisit a technical support issue. Please contact us at Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible engineering & support

Pros: ?

Cons: Sticker on center of fan was not glued with decent glue. Round sticker moved off center and the lopsided weight killed the fan. Found other forums that discussed same issue. Filed request for new fan on XFX site. Finally techs agreed to send fan but then stopped replying to discussion on their own support forum. TERRIBLE DESIGN SKILLS (hint: buy the right glue) TERRIBLE SUPPORT

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Turnkit,

The fan glue hasn't shown us any issues, but initial placement may be off-center. Simply taking a razor blade and re-alligning the sticker would work. Also, removing it permanently will not void your warranty.

Please only respond to your ticket once when waiting for a reply, otherwise it puts you in the que to wait again.

sorry for the confusion,

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: This card kills BF4, Tomb raider, far cry 3, and pretty much any modern game you can throw at it. That may not mean you can out on 16x AA with ubersampling and expect to run at 60fps 1080p, but you can get 60fps 1080p with this card at really high settings regardless. For the money it is a great deal.

Cons: None really, i had some trouble when updated the drivers the first time. You're best bet might be sticking with the ones that come on the cd that came with the box. Other than that, no cons.

Other Thoughts: Runs cool too, and none too loud (although i guess that depends more on your computer case).

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review. If you have any issues, please contact us at

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Great speeds
Looks nice
Keeps cool
Runs anything
Comes with a nice badge to show off your ownership.

Cons: HUGE! might not fit in smaller cases.

Other Thoughts: 6950 was good, 7970 is good, I'm sure the 8990 will be.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact me at

2 out of 5 eggsnot sure if i'd go with them again

Pros: bought 4 of them and 3 of them worked.... well 2 worked as expected and the 3rd does ok if I don't have it running with the other 2.

Cons: you can't put 4 of these on the same motherboard. At least I couldn't, one of them never worked at all, 2 of them would run and the 3rd would overheat the second they were all running. That's with a 20" house fan blowing right on them. Maybe I just got a couple duds. But the RMA process for XFX is absolutely horrible. I registered the product but trying to figure out what to do with the card that doesn't work at all is darn near impossible. I haven't been able to navigate their website and find any way to return the card that never worked. I work hard and when I have free time I don't like to spend it trying to figure out how to get a warranty honored, In the future I'll probably go with a product that has more accessible warranty department.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, We're sorry you had trouble with this card. At XFX we strive to provide the absolute best customer service one could ask for when it comes to getting their product taken care of. The Website at should be very user friendly now, with buttons and a guided process to get you from Registration to your New ticket. 5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I wanted!!

Pros: This GPU is amazing. I just started using it due to my new build (other thoughts for details). There are a lot of reviews saying that it wouldn't come up the first time and other stuff like that. But I would greatly recommed this to a friend.

Cons: The only thing is that it didn't come with any of the converters. I'm not taking an egg off that since it's just a minor thing.

Other Thoughts: My Build:
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX/Gen3 R2.0
AMD FX-8350 8-Core Processor
XFX Radeon 7970 Black Edition 3G GDDR5
G-Skill 16G Memory 1866 (4X4G)
NZXT Phantom Full Tower
1TB Hard Drive

1 out of 5 eggsloud fan noise

Pros: cheap (if you got the deal)

Cons: fan failed pretty quickly. In about 1 month, the fan start to make loud noise even when it's under low load. Contacted support, they said they will send a replacement cooler last week and ask me to confirm the address. I confirmed with them, then they never get back to me. I have sent them several notes but no one contacted me ever since.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Typically when we send replacement fans, we advise you it has sent, but do not attach tracking. Please email me at and I will confirm if your fans have shipped. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggs120hz and this video card is FAIL!

Pros: Great in games
Works fine in 60hz

Cons: ARTIFACTS with 120hz monitors
Desktop artifacting glitching splitting the screen

Other Thoughts: Have owned this card for 1 year now and at 60hz it ran fine no issues.

December we got a 120hz benq and this card hasn't stopped artifacting during desktop only.

In games it is fine no artifacting. I have searched everywhere and it appears this is an issue with all 7970 cards at 120hz.. Tried new dvi cables, tried different computers I have tried all drivers to no avail.

DO NOT BUY IF you intend on taking advantage of 120hz monitor. There is absolutely no excuse at this price.

Power supply 900 antec
mb sabertooth
cpu 2600k
No overclocking

Support from XFX DD have lead me nowhere I got one email on how to maybe boost 2d clocks which may be a voltage issue of 3d and 2d causing this with ati cards. There is no other fix that I have run into nor would I try to boost 2d clocks to 3d clocks increasing temps not worth it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, This is not very uncommon. Typically this is a monitor issue or a bad cable, any monitor that artifacts in 120hz will also artifact in 60hz. Please try to screen capture the artifacts and email them to an XFX team member, you should see the artifacts are not being rendered, but only seen after the graphics card (ie. Monitor or cable). Please contact me for further testing or anymore questions you may have. Thank you

3 out of 5 eggsWhy XFX why?

Pros: -Fast
-Beautiful looking (Metal frame!!! No plastic)
-Big and intimidating (about 11 1/2" make sure your case can fit it!)
-Came in nice packaging
-Case badge (If you care for the sort of thing)
-2 fans
-2 DVI ports
Maxed out Skyrim with little problems on almost 40 graphical mods (which includes Dynavision (High DoF filter) and 4K Textures)

Cons: Can't max out most games on 8x antialiasing. (Or really even 4x antialiasing) Some of these games include
-ARMA 3 Beta (probably because it just got into beta but its a lot more optimized than the alpha)
-Hitman Absolution (probably Square Enix's fault for not knowing how to port)
-Just Cause 2 (again Square Enix probably)
-Far Cry 3
-Crysis 3 (I mainly blame any card not being able to run this game well due to poor hardware optimization. It runs off the same exact engine as Crysis 2 and looks just the same to me as Crysis 2.)
-Max Payne 3
-Skyrim (I said I maxed it out in the Pros but it was at 2x FXAA and it still stuttered a bit not keeping a consistent 60 and instead dipping down to 40s)
And the biggest nail on the coffin for me is
-Crysis. Come on. This game is from 2007 and its aged quite well compared to other games. Either this game is really unoptimized or something is wrong with my card. There are no excuses why it cant run it at 8x MSAA. And yes I've heard Crysis is theoretically harder to run than Crysis 2 but this is just crazy.
Also here is another issue - Whenever my card gets above 60C in every game I have it starts creating graphical errors. GPUs have higher temperature threshold than a CPU or a motherboard because they are designed that way. This has led me to believe I might have a faulty card that cannot handle higher temperatures. And also my heat sensors for turning on my fans may be faulty as well. I'm guessing its a catalyst control center thing, but it does not sense the correct fan speed and when playing any game with the GPU at 100% load it stays at idle and I made sure I had automatic fan speed on. I've tried reinstalling CCC, trying different driver revisions,, etc. but no luck. In order to play any game with little to no graphical errors I have to manually turn my fan speed up my self to at least 80% or above on most games or I'll have errors. Also these fans are extremely loud when at 70% or above. I can hear them from my living room with the door closed.
Also another issue is that I had to underclock this card to 925MHz because any higher than 1000MHz would make the display driver stop responding. And this card was factory overclocked.

I wish to contact XFX customer support and see if I can RMA my card for another one if possible.

Other Thoughts: I've had this card since about March 2013 and have been too busy to return it. This card was not DOA but it has too many problems and I wish to return it and receive another card. Also today I just started hearing some coil whine on the fans when playing CS:GO. And if you think any of my parts might be bottle necking my GPU:
-FX-8350 @4.5GHz
-12GB DDR3 Kingston HyperX RAM
-Asus M5A88-VEVO motherboard
-630W Rosewill Green Series PSU (Using Newegg's PSU calculating tool 608W is recommended for my build)
-Rosewill Challenger Midtower case (Fits just fine and I have 5 fans mounted and a really big CPU cooler)
I really like XFX but if the next card ends up like this one or comes DOA I'll switch my vendor next time around.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we're sorry you are having issues with your card. You mentioned you want to have it replaced under warranty and i would be happy to help you do that. Please create a ticket at and email me at Thank you
