3 out of 5 eggsIncompatibility issue with UEFI/Secure Boot

Pros: I was drawn to the XFX brand because:

1) It is the only graphics card manufacturer that offers lifetime warranty.

2) They make the nicest-looking cards - their newest generation Double Dissipation coolers are particularly beautiful. I like that they don't cater to the hideous "gamer aesthetics" which every other GPU board makers use.

The card(s) runs great on my wife's computer, but encountered some issues on mine (read below for info)

Cons: I purchased two of these - the first was a regular edition, which refused to work in my PC. So I purchased a second, Black Edition card, in the hopes that it might make a difference. It still didn't work.

The card powers on fine, but simply does not get detected by Windows. My motherboard does see it, but displays it with PCIE ratio of 0x. The card does not output any signal to the monitor and I am forced to tinker with the BIOS through onboard graphics.

Initially, I thought it was a PSU issue (I had a Raidmax 700W PSU), so I upgraded to a better PSU (EVGA SuperNova 2 750W) hoping it would resolve the issue. It did not.

I performed extensive research into the issue, and noticed that a lot of users experiencing the same problem were able to resolve it by setting their motherboard's CSM (compatibility module) to "Legacy ROM Only"). This is not limited to XFX cards - apparently, a lot of R9-series GPU's have compatibility issues with the UEFI/Secure Boot feature of Windows 8.

Unfortunately, in my case setting CSM to Legacy and turning off Secure Boot did not make any difference. My motherboard (an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe) simply refuses to work with this card. I have tried every PCIE slot and tinkered with all the relevant settings in the BIOS; I even tried all the older versions of the BIOs for my motherboard. Nothing worked.

I contacted both XFX and Asus tech support regarding the issue, and both companies suggested doing what I was already doing - which is setting CSM to Legacy mode and turning off Secure Boot (XFX also did confirm that their firmware does NOT support UEFI/Support Boot. I think Sapphire's boards have confirmed support for this)

This is a real bummer and my absolute first time encountering this sort of issue with a GPU.

Other Thoughts: I have a feeling the majority of people who left a negative review for this card due to DOA (especially "repeated" DOA) was actually experiencing my issue, and didn't do their research on the matter. Their cards were likely fine; they should have tested it on another platform or taken it to a local store for testing.

Both of the cards that refuse to work on my motherboard worked perfectly fine on my wife's board (an older AMD platform, Asus Sabertooth 990FX). There would appear to be a very specific incompatibility issue between the XFX R9 280X cards and the Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe motherboard (I think I read some people with the XFX 280X working fine on lower tiers of the P8Z77 board, so I don't know what it is)

In any case, I let my wife keep the Black Edition card but I was forced to return the other card to the seller. :( A true bummer, because I care a lot about the looks of my hardware and the XFX cards simply look the best out of all the brands.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

This is the first i've heard of a compatibility issue with this card. From my experience with compatibility issues, its usually a faulty piece of hardware and not a compatibility issue.

Id try a different pci.e 3.0 card in that mobo or try a windows 7 OS on it. We'd be happy to help either way.

2 out of 5 eggsNice light show

Pros: For the first seven/eight months of having this card I really liked it. The performance was what I expected, temps were good, especially idle temps, and it was quiet.

At 1080p it maxed out most games I threw at it.

Also, it came with Battlefield 4, which is why I choose this over the three slot Asus 280x.

Cons: It's long and heavy. There is a fear that the board will bend after certain amount of time.

Oh yeah, one more, it's a biggie.

The other day I loaded up battlefield 4 (computer was on about 10-15 minutes before this) then alt-tabbed out, and then my PC shutdown and restarted. My case has a window so I was able to see a little flame shootout of my card, near the crossfire connector. I instantly pulled the plug and removed the card to check for damage.

There was a burnt electronics smell coming from it, and looking closely and carefully with a flashlight (it was very hard checking because of the cooler) it appeared the a resistor was sticking up as if it had popped or exploded out.

Other Thoughts: I was going to wait on the review, but a little surprised at response about RMA from XFX. They told me to contact my reseller for RMA (it's been almost 8 months), and that if I did it through them they would take 1 -2 months to send it back. It seemed like most are getting theirs back after 1 - 2 weeks according to forum posts.

If you interested I has this hooked up to a Super Fower Golden King 650w 80 Plus platinum PSU, and placed on an Asrock H87 performance motherboard. Never overclocked the card or any component in my case, an Antec Eleven Hundred.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, We're sorry for the confusion.

You are from Central or South America, which is why we referred you back to your retailer. The retailer in South America, Europe, Asia, and basically everywhere other than North America, handles the warranty claims, or atleast the first year. In North America, the First 30 days is handled by the retailer, the next period is handled by the manufacturer.

RMA'ing from Brazil to the (California) USA takes 4-8 weeks depending on shipping and customs.

Rmaing from Texas to California takes 2-3 weeks.

The RMA process only takes 48 hours, however the shipping time is unique for every customer based on their proximity to XFX North America.

Sorry for the confusion.

5 out of 5 eggsfirst card DOA but NewEgg replaced ASAP

Pros: Best bang for your buck in the current GPU market
nice mid level card
runs almost all games at max settings
should have a few years worth of longevity

Cons: -First card I received had the screen flickering and caused PC crashes while running non 3D applications. After much trouble shooting I saw this was a common problem with very few solutions, none of which were good ones! so I RMA'd the card back to newegg and they confirmed the issues and i was given a replacement that has so far worked 100% the way it should! I recommend ANYONE who has screen flickering do NOT do the work arounds posted online, quite simply it should NOT be necessary!

Other Thoughts: NewEgg was very helpful and verified i had done extreme due diligence when checking the card before proceeding with RMA. Once i received the new card it has worked flawlessly so far! coming from an old build with a radeon HD 6650 this card is leaps and bounds above my old one and i can truly now play games at max settings and really enjoy them! would never hesitate to work with NewEgg they always come through and care about there customers!

2 out of 5 eggsWant to love the card...flicker headaches

Pros: 1. Runs "Star Citizen" like butter and that's something!

Cons: 1. Horrible flickering problem in 2D environments.
2. Only searches show a bunch of hacks to eliminate this problem, but nothing from XFX - which is sad.
3. Fan is loud.

Other Thoughts: I want to change my review, but I will have to wait until XFX gets back to me. Just know that the flickering could happen to you as well and finding a fix can be a real pain.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Pauly, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com for the fix, we do not publicly launch the "fix" because its actually a firmware change that only affects a small number of users, not everyone.

We will have you fixed up in just a matter of minutes. Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsIf you are having 'screen flickering' problems, contact XFXForce

Pros: After contacting XFXForce about the 'screen flickering' issue I was having, I received a reply from them about an updated bios for the video card. Since then I have not had even one issue with the screen flickering again.

Cons: None other than Battlefield 4 will absolutely not run more than a few minutes before locking up my computer. Before it ran pretty good, but the screen flickering was annoying.

Other Thoughts: If this video card had come with the updated bios already installed then I would have more than likely changed my mind about ever buying an Nvidia card again. Even tho this card is running really good now with the updated bios, it may end up being my one and only AMD video card purchase.

Manufacturer Response:

Excellent.

Thank you for the great review. We appreciate your feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks better than I hoped!

Pros: So this is the very first video card I've ever bought. I was super skeptical based on how many people have had problems with it being DOA or having a screen problem. No problems like that so far. Been running like a champ for almost 2 weeks. In my rig, it works fantastically. I play everything from Fallout to Titanfall on Max settings with 40-60 fps. It hasn't gotten hotter than 64C but I do have a 200mm fan blowing directly on to it. The best thing is the lifetime warranty after you register it; be sure to do that first.

Cons: The power requirements are kind of confusing. I have a 650w 80+ gold power supply and everything runs fine. Also you need two PCI power connectors for the 8 pin power connector on the card as well as 2 molex connectors for the 6 pin on the card. Rebate also takes FOREVER.

Manufacturer Response:

Excellent.

Thank you for the great review. We appreciate your feedback.
