Up to 13dB Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler Than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13dB lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth, Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: I just want to get this out of the way, I got my card during a great sale so for me the price point was unbeatable. OK, this is a great card, it runs anything I throw at it with ease, I've never had even the slightest issue with heat, it's practically silent, even under long amounts of heavy use, and it looks great. Now that the prices on 290x's have come down, at least at the time of I'm writing this review they have, I would still heavily consider this card. I'm not running 4k, I just want this for normal 1080p gaming, and this card can play any game, as of the moment, maxed out. What else do you need?

Cons: It's a big card, but that's not any kind of an issue if you know that up front.

Other Thoughts: Give it plenty of airflow, and you'll not have any sort of issues with heat, I have never even once seen mine get up to 60 degrees Celsius, which is honestly amazing.

Pros: Looks sexy and was priced fairly well.

Cons: Dead on Arrival. My week off from classes which was going to be nerd galore with this new card have been plundered. Doing the RMA, which will probably be over a week just to get a replacement, hopefully one that works. It happens, just happened to be me this time! :P

5 out of 5 eggsSturdy, Powerful, Sleek

Pros: Powerful. This card was a replacement for my Asus Radeon 7790 2GB, which is the R7 250 equivalent. Initially tested it out on Boarderlands 2. My fps with the 7790 was around 50-60 with medium settings and medium AA. Plugged in the 280x, upped the settings to Max, along with the AA quality, and saw a fps increase of 40-60, making it 100-120fps! I will post my system specs in the Other thoughts section if you want to have a better comparison. The card itself is huge, barely fitting in my ATX case, so definitely wouldn't do in a microATX. However, the performance is highly worth it. I use the Asus GPU Tweak for managing my GPU clock, and it standardly gets the GPU speed to the boost clock speed of 1000mhz. Easily can handle faster speeds for those looking for more power. And on a final note, the card looks Bad *ss. Nicest looking card out of the other companies making the 280x, and also (depending on when you make the purchase) the cheapest one as well.

Also is pretty quiet. Fans don't make much noise on games like Boarderlands 2, PS2 and Nosgoth on maxed settings.

Cons: Large, very, very large. Really the only con I have come across, but it is very large and you will need to make sure it can fit in your case. Also requires a lot of power, but when getting a AMD product, you have to know this ahead of time.

Other Thoughts: Sturdy card for someone looking to get out of the casual gaming range. Will keep FPS games running with high fps on very pleasing settings. Do make sure you have a PSU that can handle it, especially if you are looking to do some basic overclocking. The style can really fit with any case, as it is mostly black and won't change your color scheme. I am looking into a possible issue that is individual to this card alone, but I won't share it as you probably won't ever experience this issue. Again, very pleased with this upgrade and looking forward to using it in higher end games.

Manufacturer Response:

Excellent,

4 out of 5 eggsGreat support from XFX

Pros: + Great warranty and support from XFX
+ Quiet and solid cooling from XFX
+ Nice looks, very clean unlike some flashier manufacturers
+ 1440p gaming, even for some demanding titles. Don’t expect 60 FPS all day at higher resolutions though.
+ Prices dropping after Nvidia's 900 series so still maintaining a solid price/performance ratio

Cons: - Re-badged 7970GE so you won’t be getting any of the newer GPU technologies AMD has announced
- 250W TDP can’t compete with Nvidia, especially 900 series so it will be hotter
- 11.6” is on the larger side, not ridiculously huge, but might cause problems depending on your case (I really don't like ATX builds)

Other Thoughts: Posting a review specifically regarding XFX’s great customer support.

I bought a used XFX R9-280X-TDFD card (from most likely a bitcoin mining rig) and plugged it into my computer. Everything worked fine but I installed the RAPTR software and tried out some streaming on Twitch but when I booted up Diablo III to my system basically shut down and then wouldn’t post at all after.

I did some testing since I had just moved my entire system into a new case (so I couldn’t say that the GPU was definitely the problem) and everything worked fine with older GPUs so I decided that the GPU was the issue. I filled out XFX’s support tickets online (which looks 15 years old) and had a little back and forth with one of the customer support members to double-check the issues but at the end of the day just decided to call since I felt like I knew what I was doing.

When I called XFX, one of their main support members, Mark, picked up within 15 seconds. There was no hold or wait whatsoever on a Friday midday and we discussed my ticket for less than 30s. XFX has a lifetime warranty for the original card owner but each of their cards still has a standard warranty which covered the card I purchased. Mark immediately sent me an RMA request form and I shipped the card out the next day. XFX shipped out my replacement card and I received it by the following Friday (although I'm in CA so it's faster to ship things, it's the trade-off for paying ridiculous taxes on everything I buy -_-).

When I opened the package I had received an XFX R9-280X-TDBD, which is the factory overclocked version of the 280X-TDFD and I couldn’t tell whether it was refurbished or not since the packaging was completely new. I was pleased and my older XFX 6870 DD still works great so I’ve had a great experience with XFX so far.

Obviously, XFX is an AMD-only partner so you can’t buy Nvidia cards from them but if you're looking at Radeon cards then you should strongly consider XFX and you get to support AMD for the spirit of competition!

Market check as of mid-Oct 2014: GTX 780s are being discontinued and selling at $300, but you can pick up a 280X for $220 today. GTX 770s can be picked up for ~$240. Obviously you pay more, but you get more performance there too so the price points are fair now. AMD is working on their 3XX series launch but they've been really hurting in the CPU/GPU market lately.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for noticing!

We appreciate the positive feedback.

4 out of 5 eggsIrritated

Pros: This is a good GPU, don't get me wrong. I only play at 1920x1080 so it should be enough for awhile - and as for XFX, this thing stays cool and looks pretty.

Cons: I just read today that AMD is lowering the prices of the r9 290 and the 290x. I just purchased this for 279.99 last week and the price rose again to 329.99.

Well it's back at the price I bought it at and NOW the 290 is 20 DOLLARS more than what I paid for this.

Oh well it's just my luck and stupidity working hand in hand. Should have waited knowing the 970 and 980 would do this to AMD's lineup.

Other Thoughts: I was going to wait 6 months to a year to write a review for this, but seeing the price change I just had to say something.

2 out of 5 eggs4k Stay away

Pros: Beautiful card and very quite. No need to overclock.

Cons: So I started having issue with my 4k monitor. Once I took the VGA out to trouble shoot I had no more issues. I started using the video on the 4690 haswell with no issue. During the RMA process I was told they were only able to test HDMI and Display port with 1080p because they did not have a 4k Monitor or any way to test 4k. Offered me a refurb

Other Thoughts: So I bought the card this last June and they wanted to send me a refurb card! They can't find a problem and they say "We do not have a way to test 4k resolution yet, what we can do is swap your card out for a refurb unit and hopefully that will run fine for you."

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Lindsaypace,

Have you tested the replacement card? please contact me directly to get this resolved.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: This card is extremely cheap for price vs. performance. I have been running maximum settings on all the games I play, and with Mantle technology my old Phenom II x4 965 CPU doesn't bottleneck it! Awesome card, my friend got the same one.

Cons: My friend bought the same card and it came DOA for him, kinda sucks :/

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this GPU to everyone looking for a really great card in the upper levels of gaming.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth it

Pros: Looks sweet as well as amazing price/performance ratio. I run Far Cry 3 on ultra (MSAA on 4x) super smooth. Battlefield 3 and 4 on ultra maxed settings with no problems (60 FPS). Crysis 3 and Thief with good playability too (40-55 FPS.) Haven't had a single hitch with this card and it stays pretty cool with decent case airflow (64C). I have this paired with an FX-8350 on Windows 8.1 and an Asus Crosshair IV Formula Mobo. Am considering getting another to Xfire. Great Card and pretty darn futureproof.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Too be expected of a card of this caliber: It's big. make sure you have the clearance for it in your case.
