XFX Ghost Thermal 2.0 Technology

The New and Improved Floating Heatsink Design of XFX Graphics Cards Provides the Ultimate Cooling Solution

XFX's exclusive ghost thermal 2.0 design creates a floating heatsink with open airflow between the PCB and the cover so that air can quickly ventilate off the card while simultaneously cooling the core process and the components. We've also made major advances from our first generation which includes a heat tested light weight plastic to create an overall lighter thermal which reduces the physical strain on your GPU.

Up to 13dB Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler Than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13dB lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth, Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

1 out of 5 eggsNot compatible with ASUS M5A99F Prov v2.0 mobo

Pros: 384-bit
3gb GDDR5 ram
Dual-Fans
Up to 6 monitor support

Cons: Very long card (11")
Not compatible with ASUS M5A99FX Pro v2.0 mobo

Other Thoughts: With my brand new, overpowered system, this video card is not compatible with it even after I RMA'd the first one and received the same results with the 2nd one. Here's what happened.
I received my first XFX video card about 3 weeks or so back. It replaced a EVGA NVidia Geforce 560ti card that was working fine with my 2 monitors (Hannspree HF237 and Dell E176FP). Incidently I have a 700watt power supply.
Installation was fine but when it came time for the XFX card to detect both monitors (which previously both worked fine on my EVGA video card) it did not detect both monitors. The Hannspree was on port 1 (black port) and the Dell on the 2nd port (red port) . It only detected the Hannspree monitor (black port).

I powered down, switched the DVI ports so the Dell was now on the black port & the Hannspree was on the red port. I powered up. The Dell now worked but the Hannspree did not. I powered down again and switched them back again. Powered on...Hannspree worked, Dell did not. I'm sure you can see now my monitors work fine and I troubleshot this extensively.

I powered down again, removed the XFX card, put the EVGA card back into the exact same slot that it was in before (and which the XFX card was just previously in) and plugged in my monitors. I powered up. Both monitors worked. At this point I have determined this particular PCIe slot works fine.

I powered down, removed the EVGA card, put the XFX card in the OTHER PCIe slot (blue). Made all my connections, powered up and again, only the black port worked. I again powered down and switched DVI ports. Powered up. And what ever is plugged into the black port is the working monitor. Nothing works on the red port at all.

I thought the card was bad so I RMA'd it. I just received my new card, did the exact same procedures as I did above and had the same results as I did with my first card. This is when I have determined the card to be incompatible with my current configuration.
And as a side note...I updated the drivers and am current on those and I am on Windows 7 Professional.

I have emailed XFX support via NewEggSupport & hope to hear back on what I need to do to return this for another card. Preferably one that will work with my ASUS motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsMixed Yay

Pros: Runs cool
Works right out of the box

Cons: Instruction manual could use some fleshing out. Simply put, you will need an 8 pin and 6 pin PCI-e from the PSU to the GPU.

Other Thoughts: More importantly, the card I received was warped at the location of the PCI-e inputs. I sent the card back to see if newegg would replace. This made it a tight fight for the PCI-e pins. Just be careful and patient, this very minor issue should not affect performance (I hope).

*Customer Service*
Customer service was helpful, however apparently if the serial number falls off for any reason (weather included) it does void the warranty. The whole process of sending it back to newegg and getting the card back was long. It took nearly 3 weeks to sort out, thus I was concerned about the 30-day warranty, due to my warranty being in void status.

1 out of 5 eggsI can't reccommend

Pros: Picked it up on sale for $220 so price to power ratio is great.
Great frame rates on all my games at max Settings:
Evil Within
Dota 2
Starcraft 2

Cons: This graphics card is one huge headache on Windows 7. The drivers are atrocious and I would stay away from any R9 card. I have all the updated windows / video drivers and these issues continue to occur:

The first is a monitor refresh rate problem. As the mouse moves around, or your scrolling through a browser, the taskbar at the bottom of the screen glitches constantly. This can be "kind of" fixed by using the 59hertz setting over the 60hertz but I still get glitches pretty often, and Windows generally defaults back to 60hertz without telling me. So I am constantly messing with this setting.

2. Running multiple monitors sucks, there is a sleep mode glitch that whenever coming back from sleep status your monitors don't wake up. To fix you need to restart, or unplug and replug one of the connections into your video card to refresh the thing. Super annoying, and I haven't found any reliable fix for this.

2. This card struggles with multiple monitors. To support 3 monitors you need to run 1 through the display port which will probably require and adaptor. It makes no sense that you cant just use the hdmi, DVI, vga connections.

Other Thoughts: This will probably be my last Radeon card.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues with your 280x. This flickering issue occurs on motherboards that are not compatible with the new Low/Idle power state features of the R9 Series. We have a bios modification to disable this for you

5 out of 5 eggsFast + Quiet

Pros: Fast
Cool
Quiet

Cons: It is hyoooooge. It wasn't a big deal at first as my Home PC is in a NZXT Phantom (equally hyooge case) Now I'm considering traveling for work, and hauling a 50 lb desktop to the airport seems unappealing for some reason. This severely limits my selection of Mini-itx cases. I have seen people fit this card into an EVGA Hadron Air Case, so I may very well have a portable gaming PC option.

Other Thoughts: Running at stock w/ a i5-750@4ghz and 4gb of ddr3, I'm maxing most anything I throw at it, minus a bit of SSAA in games like Metro: Last Light. It Idles at around 26 Celcius, and hits around 60 Celcius at 100% load.

Thank you for the great review!

1 out of 5 eggsNo thank you.

Pros: It fits into the PCI-Express slot.

Cons: Card #1 - DoA
Card #2 - DoA
"Item is non-refundable"
Just avoid XFX.

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues with your purchase. Getting 2 cards back-to-back that are DOA is exceptionally.

3 out of 5 eggsDO NOT plug a dvi to vga adapter in the red dvi port

Pros: it worked perfect till you plug a dvi to vga adapter in the red port

Cons: it goes from 100 to 10 fps after plugging adapter in and it

Other Thoughts: why does the red dvi have the four dvi i pins when its not dvi i whatever the reason for doing this it adds a major point of failure ive had this happen twice the second time being the time i found out that this was the problem the first one i rma ed the second one i dont think you can rma a second one aned it didnt come with a warranty card please do not put dvi d ports that look like dvi i ports if i can get this card replaced also it would be nice

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues with your 280x. DVI Port choice shouldn't have any affect on your FPS.

Please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxorce.com to help investigate this for you, it sounds more like a settings issue.

2 out of 5 eggsWont Buy Again

Pros: Stays cool, Is quiet.

Cons: Unreliable playing old and current game. Poor Customer support that makes you feel guilty for even contacting them about failed cards.

Other Thoughts: Only reason I got this card was to upgrade from my XFX 6870 I bought here on Newegg awhile back. It was good card and back then XFX had people who cared. What went wrong? Or do they own give good support to Newegg buyers?
I replaced everything in my computer to diagnose this and I have to downclock this card for it to even run stable. This is the 3rd card they sent me. First one I bought from Third Party that was going out of business so I paid $200 for it. Customer service treated me like second rate citizen. The first card failed so they sent me another card. I was having same issues except this time it wasn't freezing it was artifacting on boot up and in windows. From there I sent it back and they told me it passed the "Crysis test" Who the hell uses crysis to test a high end graphics card? Its old software get something new and test it for more then the 3 minutes you test it for. My current card is doing same thing I gave up dealing with there customer support and tried to deal with it but now I am at my wits end. I can't afford another card at this moment and I just want something reliable.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Magwolf,

Unfortunately these cards do not carry a "transferrable" lifetime warranty. It is possible to get them replaced under warranty if they are new enough, however this being your 3rd card that tested "No-Fault" is highly irregular. We want you to be satisified with your purchase and I look forward to helping you anyway I can.

5 out of 5 eggsQuite but Powerful

Pros: Quiet, Ultra settings a definite and quality, customer sat

Cons: Long card

Other Thoughts: upgraded from ATI 6670 and have no gaming concerns. I play the most taxing game ARMA3 and I can run on High-Very High settings with a 30ish FPS. All other games on Ultra 60 to 100 FPS: BF3, COH2, NFS all run on Top graphics. Make sure you have a FULL tower case. I had to move a HDD out of the way to fit this puppy in. You need a 8 & 6 plug PSU plugs. Do NOT use a split cable provided. You want full power for each cable. Im running a 900W and can accommodate 16gig-mem, 3 HDD, Phn II X4-965 and this card with no issues.

2 out of 5 eggsDriver problems

Pros: Very strong

Cons: I've been running it on Catalyst 13.12 since I purchased it over half year ago since those were the only stable drivers I could find at the time. AMD released new drivers, 14.12, so I though I'd give those a try too. Long story short, Catalyst 14 crashes on me within seconds to minutes of booting into Windows. I feel short-changed that I can't update to the latest drivers and take advantage of possible improvements.

Other Thoughts: Design flaw/annoyance, 1 HDMI, 2 mini-displayports. As far as I know, there isn't a major difference between mini-dp and hdmi, so why not put in more hdmi ports since more people probably have those cables. I had to buy a mini-displayport adapter.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Thank you for the review. Have you installed the drivers without any 3rd party software running in the background?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Graphics Card

Pros: Have had no problems so far, it will run almost every game at at least a solid 60fps on highest settings (would be higher but games sometimes cap the frames at 60). Monitoring it I haven't had problems with overheating or getting close to a dangerous heat.

Cons: Have not notices any cons in the few months that I have had it.
