5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: To my understanding most if not all of these cards come with proper hardware to be flashed with the XFX r9 290x firmware and unlock the extra shaders. I found a with a little effort that has a checker to determine if your card will work correctly or not. I just picked up a used one for 270 bucks, (was likely used to mine coins) but i trust it will work and if it doesnt unlock, oh well i have a 290 :DDD we'll see. With the increase of ASIC miners these will likely be up for sale used ( like mine) i'll update when I attempt to flash. Good luck!

Cons: i do not have it in my hands yet :/

Manufacturer Response:

Excellent. We are happy everything is going as expected.

1 out of 5 eggsUnable to start support ticket!!

Pros: fast
plays any game I want on ultra

Cons: xfx support ticket site isn't working
I've tried many times on different computers and devices and still nothing.
I need to get some input on my issues. .
- I have been having 4 lines scroll up my screen, like artifacts but not white line. They don't bother me but they do get annoying to see. They are highly visible during fast camera movements in games.
- I've been having boot issues and crashing. The boot issue is because the card makes the system boot legacy instead instead of UEFI, which I use in 8.1. Boots fine but still has hiccups when forced UEFI boot in BIOS. The crashing hasn't happened but a few times. The card becomes unresponsive and the mobo doesn't recognize the card until a full shutdown.
Please please, xfx say something. I want this taken care of before the warranty is gone.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsI love this card, but...

Pros: Very quick card
I can't really find a game that it can't play on ultra settings

Cons: HOT! I max around 90C when I play BF4

I've started to notice that when it gets above 75C-ish it starts to artifact but below that it's completely fine
There is no reason it should be running this hot!

I also get some coil whine around 45% fan usage

I wish I could've got the newer version with better fans...

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review!

We are happy you are pleased. If you have any further questions, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com.

5 out of 5 eggsI have had this card for more than 90 days

Pros: This card is a beast and will play any game i throw at it with more than good fps.The card did unlock very easy to a 290x with the stock xfx 290x firmware. This card also oc'ed to 1125/1275 stable 24/7 and gave the card a 15% boost in Bf4, with an amazing 120fps maxed out at 1080p.I have also put a XSPC water block on it and temps never go above 45 c under load with no under clocking.

Cons: Heat, but i have a water block on it so not too much of a con.

Other Thoughts: Would love to buy one more when the price drops back down to 400.00, witch is what i payed for this one.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello and thank you for the great review. Modifying the bios is highly discouraged, as these cards are not 290X units.

1 out of 5 eggsinconsistent.. seems broken

Pros: when it works it's fast

Cons: very inconsistent performance... Sometimes my games are smooth as butter sometimes the fps is worse than my old GPU. One day I'm play Crysys3 maxed out on ultra at 60fps.. next day its 15-20 fps and black screens my system after 10 seconds...

It's been very hard to troubleshoot the issues due to their random nature. I've reinstalled the drivers several times and I have manually set up the fan speed.

Nothing has had any effect... Sometimes the card works and mostly it doesn't. Maybe it's broken?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Ruben,

The 290A requires a 6pin and 8pin power connector. Its possible that your PSU is providing PCI-E Cables from the non-modular section at 20A, instead of 30A, which can lead to similiar issues. Try switching the PCI-E power cables.

If you are still having issues, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com. We are confident we can resolve this issue for you.

Thank you

3 out of 5 eggsWait

Pros: Wait for the XFX card with dual fans to come out. This card hits around 93 degrees on load. Have very good air flow in my case. Runs anything on ultra, pure awesome. Starcraft 2 getting 190 fps on ultra. Getting 500-980 khash litecoin mining (dont really care about that got it for games)

Cons: Runs hot. Expensive

Other Thoughts: wait for the other xfx version with the dual fans. Way quieter and way cooler, had a xfx 6870 and was awesome. will buy from xfx again

Manufacturer Response:

The new versions are out, i hope you are still satisfied with this card. If it gives you any issues, other than temperature, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com. oddly, these cards are rated stable at 95'C.

5 out of 5 eggsUlamog, the infinite gyre.

Pros: It's fast. Average 62FPS in Unigine Valley Extreme HD.
It overclocks well (1050/1325).
It came with Battlefield 4 (merely register with XFX).
Low MSRP ($400).

Cons: It runs at ~93 Celsius in most any game.
It sounds like a jet engine (I've never had it go over 70%).
Some coil whine, on low resolutions.
Overpriced at the moment.

Other Thoughts: You might want to wait for the non-reference coolers.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review! The Non-Reference designs are already out R(-290x-EDBD and EDFD

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, just not right now

Pros: It's a great card. The strengths of this card are:
1. Running all games at max.
2. Surprisingly not that loud (unless you manually ramp up the rpm)
3. Gracious 4GB memory (Finally, I can use 4K textures on my bacon)
4. Price/Performance (I'm talking MSRP)
5. If you manually ramp up the fan to 100%, you can't hear your annoying gf/bf/parents.
6. Run a stress test and use the card to warm your room.

Cons: It also comes with cons:
1. The card seems to be unstable. I occasionally get my second 1080p monitor all pixel-shuffled. when I boot the system. It requires restart to work properly (hopefully). Switching the monitor around did not help.
2. Playing Skyrim with 2K resolution textures and ~60 other mods, It seems to struggle a lot. Framerates vary between 20-60 (v-sync on) and looking at the afterburner, you can see the core clock jump between 700-950 like crazy. I thought it was a heat issue first, but even when I bump up the rpm for the fan, the problem won't go away.

Other Thoughts: I would love to get a second one and watercool the card. However, at this price point, just get a GTX780. This card may not be appealing unless you are a cyrptominer.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review! It sounds like your artifacting monitor is actually a bad cable or adapter. Can you try swapping those parts? If there is an issue with this card, we would be happy to help take care of this under warranty. Please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: This card is a heavy hitter for high resolutions. The 4GB of VRAM is still more than neede for MOST new titles, but is warm welcomed for future titles.

Cons: When I first got the card I had some issues going from nvidia to AMD even with cleaning drivers. I ended up having to reformat, but since then the card has been an ABSOLUTE DREAM. The card doesnt put out alot of heat, even though the gpu gets hot temperature wise, there isnt alot of airflow in this chinsey aluminum heatsink to remove it fast enough.

The card STILL manages to meet its mark and stay quiet so these are really non-issues, just any users concerns.

Other Thoughts: I dont recommend getting this card if you plan to keep your puny 1080p monitor as a GTX 780 is often times faster and currently cheaper. But at higher resolutions the extra memory bus seems to help the card start pulling ahead quite quickly.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review. If you have any questions regarding your unit, please contact us to let us know.
