Improved Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty Bitty Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

Partially Resident Textures PRT Technology

Radically Change the Detail of Your Games from Flat to Realistic

Even in the latest titles, gamers may have noticed that games often reuse or repeat textures, particularly on the ground or in background scenery such as mountains or trees. This is because increasing the physical size or number of textures in a game can have a negative impact on the performance of a GPU. PRT is a radical technology that hopes to break this cycle.

5 out of 5 eggsFast & Quiet

Pros: plays all my games at high-ultra (no AA) and runs quieter than my case fans so i can barely even hear it even if I put my head up to the case

Cons: I had a little trouble getting the hdmi port to work, but that could very well be my fault, but i was able to get it to work after a reinstall

Other Thoughts: definitely recommend it for anyone who plays graphic intensive games at 1080p

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review, we appreciate the positive feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsIt does as it says!

Pros: Quiet, and high performance for a bargain, this is a great card for all of my gaming needs. It plays all of my games 80+fps at ultra settings.

Cons: None at all.

Other Thoughts: I was a bit excited for the arrival of this card that I forgot that it needed more power to support it. Once my new PSU came I no longer regret anything. This truly is a great card.

Thank you for the kind review, we appreciate your feedback.

3 out of 5 eggsGood card, no luck with crossfire

Pros: *Good Value
*Runs newer games at 1080p, albeit lower settings

Cons: *Crossfire was a nightmare for me. After updating OS, drivers, and PSU, 2 of these in crossfire are giving me worse performance than just one.

Other Thoughts: Get it if you need one card and are on a budget. Skip crossfire and get a 280 or 290 if you can.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry you are having issues with your card.

We would be happy to help you address this issue, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com. Some game engines need to be optimized for Crossfire.

1 out of 5 eggsWhen you get a lemon, you're stuck

Pros: Runs games such as Sniper Elite 3 on ultra with no problems and runs cool in my machine.

Cons: I've had frequent freezing (not BSOD and similar to what Kevin W below and others on the internet describe) which requires reboot every time since I got the card. My files are often corrupted because of these freezes.

My self-built computer has been rock-solid for 3 years with another AMD card (HD4850):
MB (Asus Sabertooth 55i) and CPU (Intel i7 860 not oc’ed) Corsair 650 power supply
8 GB of DDR3 Crucial Ballistix RAM (not oc’ed).
Temps do not get above 45 degrees C under heavy load. XFX card does not go above 45 degrees C under heavy load.

I contacted their email tech support and it's been a back and forth of uninstalling and installing drivers. I know it's the card and I fear if I ever get an RMA, it'll be the slow and painful experience others have described, not to mention having to pay for shipping and insurance. With the prospect of a refurb coming, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Other Thoughts: I've been building computers for over 15 years and know what I'm doing. I've never had any problem with any other graphics card. And I know my current system is enough to run this card but the card is the problem. It appears most others have had no problems with it but given my current situation with XFX, I would not get another one of their products.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues. If you're interested in RMA'ing it for XFX Warranty testing, please let me know. We can make this a very seamless and hands on process. Our email support is neweggsupport@xfxforce.com and our website is xfxsupport.com.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Ran great...kind of.

Cons: A bit noisy, burned out after only a month of use, in the process of making a support ticket with XFX to get a replacement card. I didn't even really run the card on Ultra graphics, and it still burned out.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsCustomer for Life

Pros: I like sweet spots. XFX constantly hits the sweet spot between price/performance. I've had this particular card now for over a week and it works as advertised.
-cool
-quiet
-will play most games at 1080p on max settings
-this is a slight step up from the card it replaced, a Radeon 7878 1Ghz Edition (see below)

Cons: None really. Am I gonna complain about the two six-pin power connectors or the length of the card, no sticker? Nah.

Other Thoughts: I had the XFX 7870 1Ghz Edition for about 18 months. When it gave up the ghost I figured that was it, I'd have to buy a new card. Created a ticket a XFX support with details of the incident and my troubleshooting. They had me send it in and promptly said that they would be replacing it with this card, which arrived a week later brand new in the box. They have also recently sent me a replacement fan for my older XFX Radeon 6850. Between these two cards I've gotten four free quality games that easily value over $200. This folks, is how you win: Customers for Life!

My gaming rig runs a FX-6300 (sweet spot), Asus mobo, 8GB of GSkill 1600 RAM (sweet spot), and 750W Ultra PSU (they've never failed me yet)

World of Tanks, max settings, avg. 40-45 fps

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card

Pros: Very good card for the price.
I have two of them in Xfire and the performance is very good.

Cons: Top card can get to 80c in furmark but it doesnt go over 70c in normal gaming.

1 out of 5 eggsPower Rating Incorrect

Pros: None

Cons: The manufacturer claims a 600W PSU is required to run this card. A 600W PSU is insufficient, as a 600W Corsair PSU was bought to go along with the card and fails to provide enough power. Performance may be great, but it does not matter if it does not work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues with your card. The max power draw of a 270x is 225 watts. 600 watts is plenty enough to handle this card...

2 out of 5 eggsI don't think I'll buy from XFX again.

Pros: Mostly ran whatever I wanted it to.
Looked nice in my rig.
Decent enough performance for the price.

Cons: Only had it for 3 months before sending it back to XFX and getting a refurbished replacement.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card just under a year ago. Bought it right before Christmas as a gift to myself, actually. Built a nice little budget rig around this card and an FX 6300. I spent $750 total (I already had a monitor and other peripherals), and received my items the day before Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas, Kevin...

All was well for the first month or so. I had a few odd glitches here and there, but everything seemed to be fine otherwise. I blamed some weird graphical errors on AMD's drivers and tried to live with it. Over time, however, these errors became worse. My screen would periodically flicker as if someone had just struck the side of an old tube tv. After a couple weeks, this evolved into odd vertical lines appearing across the screen in solid colors. Eventually, that led to freezing, and then of course, BSODs.

I tried everything, from running memory tests, to reloading drivers, to re-installing Windows. The problems persisted. They would appear randomly whenever the GPU was in use. Whether this was while playing a game, or simply watching youtube videos in FireFox. A freeze or BSOD could happen at any time.

Finally, I decided to contact XFX customer support, and while they were generally friendly, their service was slow as cold molasses. After sending in my RMA request, I was told to pack up my card and send it in to them. It took several days for them to send me more information on exactly how and where to return the card.

Once the card finally arrived at XFX, it took another two weeks for them to diagnose the problem. I was finally given information about my card being faulty, and was told I would be receiving a replacement.

Almost two weeks later, I finally received my replacement in the mail. It was a refurbished older model, with an entirely different cooler/fan shroud on it. It looked more like a 7870 than the 270x that I had purchased. Not being one to be too picky about such things, however, I installed the card, and all seemed to be well.

Now, several months later, I've noticed those strange bursts of visual static happening again. Luckily, there have been no BSODs or odd vertical lines, but it feels as though it's only a matter of time.

I honestly am not satisfied with XFX. The cards run relatively well for the price, but their customer service seems very slow and lacking, and honestly, receiving a refurbished card after sending one back that I only owned for 3 months and wasn't actually damaged by me is pretty low. Now that the refurbished card I received as the replacement for my practically brand new one is showing the same symptoms of failure that my first card had before dying... I just don't want to deal with XFX anymore.

Next time, I think I'll buy an Asus or Sapphire. They've never steered me wrong before.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Kevin, we're sorry you had issues with your cards. Replacement are always upgrades or equivalent, never downgrades to older series (like 7870s..) Please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com so we can get this sorted out.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsXFX R9 270X

Pros: Silent
Great performance
Stays cool
Plays just about everything on high-ultra settings 60+ FPS
5 output options
$20 Rebate worked
Got it for $180 total early June
Shipped fast

Cons: Plain looking, kinda boring
One DVI doesn't output as high resolution (I knew this when I bought it)
Nothing enough to take an egg
I wanted to mention the fans are facing downward, the back of the GPU is on the top. Kinda annoying, since the air in my case should be flowing in from the front and travel upward. Whatever.

Other Thoughts: I have had this for 6+ months now, performance is great. Using a 1680x1050 monitor, FPS is always above 60 FPS, never any lag or stutter on high-ultra FPS on somewhat recent games.
This thing is incredibly quiet, I tested it by unplugging all of my case fans and CPU fan, leaving just the PSU and this. Absolutely silent, you cannot hear a thing, even with my case open and my ear a foot away from the card. Unfortunately, I have been using somewhat noisy case fans, so I didn't know how quiet this thing was until I recently tested it.
However, I am not a big fan of how it looks. I am a big fan of flashy cards, so I kinda wish I would have gone with MSi or ASUS. Oh well, I don't currently have a case window, so it doesn't matter much.
I have been using this with an FX-6300 and 8GBs of RAM, and the only game that hasn't run perfectly is the newer Thief game. I get around 38 FPS on ultra settings, and changing them to high I get around 39 FPS. It may or may not be part of the fault with my processor, I don't know.

I got this for my first budget build, I managed to spend under $600 and this was my most expensive component.
