Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty Bitty, Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

3 out of 5 eggsBad luck...

Pros: Aesthetically beautiful. XFX did a great job making this card look good. Lifetime warranty. Powerful. Quiet.

Cons: Seems prone to failures. My first card had the fans fail ~6 months after I bought it. I RMA'd the card (shipping was out of pocket...) only to have it not properly display 2D (the screen would occasionally stutter). This ended up being an issue with the BIOS, and required me to flash the BIOS as per XFX's instructions. The card then worked properly for maybe 4-6 weeks, and is now having separate issues with artifacts/display loss requiring a force restart, so I'm now waiting to see if RMA #2 will fix it...

Other Thoughts: When it's working, great card. I'm not sure if I've just had bad luck or if the failure rate really is that high, but it seems like it's not the most stable card, although this may be an issue with the R9 line rather than XFX's build quality. Kind of a shame, because did I mention how good it looks?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, We're sorry you had issues with your card. If you ever have any questions, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com.

4 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: It definitely has handled everything I've thrown at it so far at max settings without any issues. It's not noisy or anything so no complaints about the performance or noise factors

Cons: The LED doesn't work on the card, which isn't a big deal really, but it bothers me as to why it won't turn on. Makes me think there might be an issue with the card in the future. Also this thing gets pretty hot under load.

Other Thoughts: Would give 5 stars if not for the LEDs not working. Peace of mind type of thing really.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

I understand why your LED's aren't working. The LED logo was only on the 290a and 290x cards, not 280's (see pictures).

Sorry for the confusion.

2 out of 5 eggsThe card looks beautiful-- but temperatures are ugly.

Pros: The card itself looks gorgeous. The black and dark red theme make this card the sexiest GPU I've ever seen. No joke.

Cons: Inadequate VRM cooling!
The modules have no heatsinks on them, so if you are playing a graphically demanding game (such as Crysis 3) without undervolting, your VRM temps are almost guaranteed to spike to 100C, resulting in the screen going blank and having to manually restart the PC.

Also, after about 3-4 months of use, one of the fans has stopped funcuntioning properly. It seems to spin off-center, and occasionally makes an annoying buzzing noise. The fan tachometer tells me that it's spinning at about 1/3 RPM of what a normal fan would.

I most likely will not be buying AMD GPUs again in the future, as I am also disappointed with the legacy-looking control panel and lack of driver support. Compared to NVidia's techonologies, AMD seems to be lacking.

Other Thoughts: I bought have two of these in Crossfire, and both have the same issue with improper VRM cooling. I wish these cards actually worked, because they are darn sexy.

Needless to say, I am incredibly disappointed with XFX. I bought these cards for high-end gaming and I can't even play a high end game for 30 minutes without the VRMs overheating! I'm hoping I can contact them to get a different card.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello BMAN,

we're sorry you are having issues. Im assuming the overheatnig VRM's would be on the lower card due to lack of proper airflow. I can assure you that the VRM cooling should be more around 70'C in Crysis, otherwise there would be a world-wide epidemic of overheating 280x VRMS.

We would be happy to help you get this replaced if it is infact overheating, please contact us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com for more assistance.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsI Love It

Pros: EXCELLENT in every way. I have owned many quality video cards and this is my first XFX. I'ts performance has exceeded my expectations. Also very important to me is the look of the card. My tower has a full viewable panel on the side so I like to have all my goodies look nice. This card is simply the best looking in its class.

Cons: I would not hesitate to say NONE!

Other Thoughts: I will look more closely at XFX products in the future. Also one more thought. I have had no issues with this card running hot. None.

Manufacturer Response:

Excellent. We are happy everything is going as expected.

3 out of 5 eggsIncompatibility issue with UEFI/Secure Boot

Pros: I was drawn to the XFX brand because:

1) It is the only graphics card manufacturer that offers lifetime warranty.

2) They make the nicest-looking cards - their newest generation Double Dissipation coolers are particularly beautiful. I like that they don't cater to the hideous "gamer aesthetics" which every other GPU board makers use.

The card(s) runs great on my wife's computer, but encountered some issues on mine (read below for info)

Cons: I purchased two of these - the first was a regular edition, which refused to work in my PC. So I purchased a second, Black Edition card, in the hopes that it might make a difference. It still didn't work.

The card powers on fine, but simply does not get detected by Windows. My motherboard does see it, but displays it with PCIE ratio of 0x. The card does not output any signal to the monitor and I am forced to tinker with the BIOS through onboard graphics.

Initially, I thought it was a PSU issue (I had a Raidmax 700W PSU), so I upgraded to a better PSU (EVGA SuperNova 2 750W) hoping it would resolve the issue. It did not.

I performed extensive research into the issue, and noticed that a lot of users experiencing the same problem were able to resolve it by setting their motherboard's CSM (compatibility module) to "Legacy ROM Only"). This is not limited to XFX cards - apparently, a lot of R9-series GPU's have compatibility issues with the UEFI/Secure Boot feature of Windows 8.

Unfortunately, in my case setting CSM to Legacy and turning off Secure Boot did not make any difference. My motherboard (an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe) simply refuses to work with this card. I have tried every PCIE slot and tinkered with all the relevant settings in the BIOS; I even tried all the older versions of the BIOs for my motherboard. Nothing worked.

I contacted both XFX and Asus tech support regarding the issue, and both companies suggested doing what I was already doing - which is setting CSM to Legacy mode and turning off Secure Boot (XFX also did confirm that their firmware does NOT support UEFI/Support Boot. I think Sapphire's boards have confirmed support for this)

This is a real bummer and my absolute first time encountering this sort of issue with a GPU.

Other Thoughts: I have a feeling the majority of people who left a negative review for this card due to DOA (especially "repeated" DOA) was actually experiencing my issue, and didn't do their research on the matter. Their cards were likely fine; they should have tested it on another platform or taken it to a local store for testing.

Both of the cards that refuse to work on my motherboard worked perfectly fine on my wife's board (an older AMD platform, Asus Sabertooth 990FX). There would appear to be a very specific incompatibility issue between the XFX R9 280X cards and the Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe motherboard (I think I read some people with the XFX 280X working fine on lower tiers of the P8Z77 board, so I don't know what it is)

In any case, I let my wife keep the Black Edition card but I was forced to return the other card to the seller. :( A true bummer, because I care a lot about the looks of my hardware and the XFX cards simply look the best out of all the brands.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

This is the first i've heard of a compatibility issue with this card. From my experience with compatibility issues, its usually a faulty piece of hardware and not a compatibility issue.

Id try a different pci.e 3.0 card in that mobo or try a windows 7 OS on it. We'd be happy to help either way.

3 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service

Pros: Very nice card, fast, graphics are awesome, great improvement in frame rates. Very quiet for the large duel fans installed.

Cons: Card is huge, make sure you measure your case. If you have room you cannot go wrong with this card.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card in mid-April, used included drivers. The card ran flawlessly. Then I purchased Wallenstein, it requires the new 14.4 drivers. Installing these drivers causes the card to have issues. It will run the game fine, but the issues are in windows, using a web browser causes flickers, then eventual screen corruption, locking my system. I have tried different browsers, all with the same results. The problem I am having is that I did not update the drivers until my Newegg warranty had expired, or I would not be posting this now as they would have RMA'd it. I have been building my own gaming rigs since the early 2000's I know how to trouble shoot, and resolve hardware/driver issues. I did tons of reading and research, and others have the exact same issue with this card on the new drivers. I contacted XFX and started the complaint process with them, after 5 days of me sending and them replying, me checking temps, ect. (their support system sucks) they came to the conclusion that my 650 watt power supply was my problem. So I dumped another 120.00 into a 1000 watt Rosewill from Newegg. I can honestly say my power supply was not at fault. So now I am close to 450.00 invested into this card, and am continuing to do XFX's trouble shooting for them. I am sure this issue will be resolved to one I am happy with eventually, but I do not feel I should have to take this amount of time to get there. The overall consensus of this card is great, and I agree with it. I have a bad one and it happens. Just make sure after you purchase it that you update to the latest drivers ASAP to make sure you don't have these issues. I am now back to running the included Drivers 13.12 and not playing Wallenstein, and restarting my XFX support...Happy gaming!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Deadog, I have emailed you the BIOS fix for this issue, if you have any questions, please let us know.
