5 out of 5 eggsReview Round 2

Pros: After installing XSPC Razor waterblock I was able to push this card even further.

Maximum clocks sustained for benchmarking 1315/1700 with +200mV.

3DMark11 score of P17940!

Cons: Very few GPUs will clock as high as this one

VRM1 temperatures can still be problematic with full cover waterblock. Check out Fujipoly Ultra Extreme thermal pads to drop VRM temperatures; 10x150mm to use on VRMs.

Other Thoughts: Don't attempt to OC your card this far without water cooling!

A very, very small amount of 290, or even 290X , cards are capable of clocking as well as mine.

Don't be disappointed if your card doesn't make it THIS far. I was fortunate enough to get a very, very good chip.

Coil whine when pushing lots of additional voltage.

I have easily spent over 100 hours testing this card to find the best blend of voltages, clock speeds, and temperatures.

I have found the best blend of everything to be had at 1200/1500 +75mV offset in Sapphire Trixx; Your card may need more voltage. At these much safer clocks and voltages I get 96% of the performance of pushing the card to the brink.

1 out of 5 eggsI lucked out in a bad way

Pros: fast card full 1080 and slightly larger 120hz 200FPS on just about every game I could throw at it.

Cons: cards started to fail one after another I started with 3 total
happened every time the system turned off the display over night, the next day it wouldn't "wake up" the display , had to hard reset and would no longer boot into windows. remove the last card on the chain and worked again for another night then happened all over again, when using the failed cards by themselves, there are red lines in a cluster down the center of the screen on both. so what ever failed on one happened on the other. I would think it is the memory that is the issue

Other Thoughts: I originally thought of using this to "mine" lite coins, but shortly after that thought I wanted to test out the system for monster gaming on a 60" led tv and within the week started having issues freezing and black screens. so mining may have been the way togo as I think it would have saved the memory from failing, I truly almost cried when they failed I thought I had to rma for replacement from xfx and be stuck with the brand model.
Thank goodness newegg is rma'ing and I will be purchasing lower model cards as I wasn't really touching the limits of these cards. might end up saving some big bucks.

System;
fm2a88x +6
FX6100
16gb corsair
128GB ocz SSD
Corsair 1200I PSU

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, it sounds like you didnt have stable settings, causing the crash over night. You may have permanently damaged them and will have to all be tested to see which are still in-tact.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: bought 3 and all of them worked fine. One even overclocks to 1100 core and 1550 memory.
runs most any game smoothly, especially in 4x crossfire. Also a decent card for scrypt mining. (800-900kh/s)

Cons: loud as hell when at full load, but only because I try to keep it under 90 Celsius. The price was $525, which is about $126 over msrp, this is due to demand however.

5 out of 5 eggsXFX FTW

Pros: Bought 2 cards as a combo for $450 each.
Both cards locked, but have Hynix Memory
Hefty overclocking on 1 of the cards
780Ti performance for fraction of the cost
Chews through benchmarks and games without compromise.

Cons: They didn't unlock to 290X
One card only capable of minor OC; 10% on core and 8% on memory.

Other Thoughts: Overclocked one card to 1215/1700 to give me a P17316 3DMark11 score. Graphics score of 20448.
Yes, that's 6.8GHz on 5GHz Hynix RAM modules :D

My score could be higher if I had a 6-core Intel CPU. I have noticed all of the 3DMark HoF scores that are beating me have similar or lower graphics scores, but crush me on the CPU/Physics score. i7 4770k is enough for my needs, but not for leading benchmarks.

Beast OC obtained with stock blower running at 75%; it is loud, but capable of dissipating the heat to find maximum clocks.

I still need to install my waterblock to see if there is more headroom. I think I have found the limit however as the VRMs were still well within temp specifications.

Eat your heart out green team

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cards

Pros: Great cards!
Played Bioshock Infinite all the way through on them over the weekend and they didn't miss a beat.

Cons: LOUD! During gaming isn't so bad, especially when you're really into the game and got the sound up.. :)
However, do any GPGPU processing and it quickly heats up to 95C and kicks in the fan at warp speed.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why everyone's hating on the XFX R9's. I bought 5 of these Black Edition cards, 3 in 1 PC and 2 in the other and they are outstanding performers.

For you Scrypt miners out there - they get a good 915-920kh/s each with the right settings.

2 out of 5 eggsthe cards are USED but we have to pay more then NEW price tag

Pros: fast

Cons: My 2 cards are used as I can see scratches everywhere, especially on fan! I would say this is manufacturer refurbished but we have to pay higher then NEW price tag. I don't know how long this card have been used and how long it will stay alive. 25% restock fees!

Other Thoughts: newegg and these video card manufacturers are making a killing out of these cryptocurrency craziness

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, We're sorry you are concerned about the quality of your card. Its absolutely illegal to sell a used card as "New" in the United states. When you opened the box, were the original retail seals un-harmed or were they damaged?

If you notice any issues with this card, please contact us or Newegg immediately.

Pros: Where to begin!!! Card id fast!!! BF4 on ultra holding average 100-120fps lowest dips so far is 85 fps. Who says this card gets that hot does not know what they are talking about. after about 2 hours playing max temp was 77c and thats on Uber mode. Im using MSI after burner with a fan curve and its not even that loud!!!! Idle temps are 50-55c

Cons: wish the mining had not made this card go up so high in price, but what can you do!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 eggsThis is the Black Edition and it's Over Priced

Pros: Extremely powerful. Excellent with 30" monitors, mine is running at 2560x1600. Pre-overclocked by XFX.

Cons: Way over priced at the moment, Dec 10, Newegg wants $500 where a base r9 290 is $399. An extra $100 for nothing but a 3% overclock (980MHz vs stock 947MHz) that you could do yourself on a regular r9 290 is ridiculous.

It's loud. In order to keep the card from underclocking itself due to heat, the fan needs to be running around 60% vs 42% on the stock r9 290 which many already consider to be too loud.

Other Thoughts: Luckily XFX is mod friendly and will still warranty the card if you let them know you're going to watercool it to eliminate the heat and noise issues.

At this point the card is way overpriced. I would recommend buying a regular r9 290 for the MSRP, overclocking it yourself and using that extra hundred bucks on watercooling or some other after market cooling, and of course letting XFX know that you're going to do so.

+2 eggs for performance
+1 egg for XFX supporting after market cooling
-1 egg for price !!!
-1 egg for loudness

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Darkfiber,

Technically, we only ask people to advise us if they are modifying the cooling because we want to make sure they know the exceptions for their model, and which parts absolutely dont work. We dont actually keep track of your serial number and if you modified the cooling solution.
