5 out of 5 eggsRespect to XFX ( 3 generations of XFX GPU purchases)

Pros: Where do I start..... I love XFX quality. This cards are sleek and beautifull and yes I bought 2 of them. Was really unsure if I should of gone with the R9 290X series because of so many mixed up reviews but I'm glad I did the purchase cause price was right for this puppies and was at $459 after rebate, which reminds me tomorrow I got to do the rebate thing taken care of.

After I received the card I cleaned up the PC, cleaned the H100 and reaplied new paste on the I5 and installed new SSD. All went smooth and it was time to stress test them. I'm not type of guy who all the time stress test the smack of its hardware just for the sake of been geeky but when I purchase new stuff I do around 10 min of stress test to make sure all is in order. I live in Florida so I have my AC blowing at 68 Fahrenheit thats around 20C, just for the sake of numbers testings and results. The fans set up in my HAF932 with acrylic panel is at 9 fans total:

- 180mm fan behind HD cage (bringing cold air in)
- x2 120mm fans on the arcylic side panel (bringing cold air in) blows straight onto both GPU's from the side
- 120mm fan in front of the HD cage secured with tie wraps (bringing cold air in) blows straight onto both GPU's from the front
- x2 120mm fans in push pull configuration (bringing cold air in)
- x3 120mm fans on top of the case ( taking all the hot air out, this is very important for good airflow and works like a charm)

As you see the cooling is well done and works excellent and I also have Aerocool Touch2000 and NZXT Sentry LX LCD fan controllers to take care of most of the fans, the H100 fans I have them connected to the mobo just for safety measure.

Heaven benchmark testing and results:
- GPU1 95-100% usage , 68-75C temperature
- GPU2 87-100% usage , 63-68C temperature
Since I havent finished the benchmark and only run it for 10 min, lowest results I saw was 75FPS and highest was close to 180FPS maybe even 200FPS, settings were all on highest and my resolution on the 27" monitor is 1920x1080.

since I just installed them I only used the GPU's for real ingame testing on the game I currently play and thats Heroess&Generals, usage on the GPU is only for 1 of them since Crossfire is not possible in the game for now and max usage i see from 50-95% with temps variating from 60-67C.

Thanks XFX for another great card and great warranty, I have been 3 generations of ur GPU loyal customer.

One remark though, the PSU requirement is kinds on the high end from what XFX and other brands require. I run all this set up with all them fans, 2 fan controllers, 2 HD with the trustworthy 1000W 5 year old Corsair and still have room to add more stuff to it..... But this Corsair PSU has been proven to be beastlly, it puts 90% of the new high end PSU's to the shame in power and quality output.

Cons: As for Cons not much to say or any to complain, I did notice that when the PC goes into sleep mode for longer time it takes hard reset by pressing the button, then win7 getss messed up and the keyboard wont react so I have to wait 25 sec to start itself normally since keyboard is stuck.

This is not XFX fault, this is AMD drivers hiccup, it took 2 years for my x2 6870"s to actually be fixed with new drivers and dont lock up the system when PC goes into deep sleep.

I remember there were work arounds back then, but then it took proper driver update in ordder to get rid of this problem.

I see XFX guy always responds here, so if you have any solution or quick fix for this just let me know of it :)

Other Thoughts: Final thoughts, I will be returning customer to XFX as I have always been, big thanks to a great company.

Pros: Fast, can run BF4 at 60 - 70 FPS on ultra. But don't waste your money you will be so upset. Go the Nvidia option. I will never buy AMD again because of this. Newegg wont take it back and XFX wants you to send it in, but no guarantee that they will find an issue and still ship you back the same card. Waste of shipping.

Basically, I am stuck with a lemon.

Cons: When playing Battlefield 4 my system will black screen and the computer system will freeze (zero access to Windows 7 64-bit). This may include an audio loop of the last playing sound as well. The only solution is to power off the computer and turn it back on; the restart button will not even work. The time period before the black screen will occur is random; it's not possible to replicate the issue on demand. Furthermore, once the computer has black screened and the computer is shut down and started back up, it appears that BF 4 will not black screen for the duration of the time the computer remains on.

POWER SUPPLY
Originally, I had purchased a 750 watt multi-rail power supply. The 750 watt powersupply had four 12v 20 amp rails. I plugged the 6 pin vga power and 8 pin vga power into the R9 290X using two different cables from two different 12v 20 amp rails. However, I have sense upgraded the power supply to a 1300 watt single 12 volt 108 amp rail version. This new 1300 watt power supply has plenty of power, but the black screen is still present. I can now rule out the power supply as being the issue. I paid $180 for a more powerfull power supply because I don't want to send my R9 290X back for repair to only have XFX state there is nothing wrong with it.

VIDEO DRIVERS
I have uninstalled all video drivers and reinstalled the AMD 14.4 driver with same results. I have updated to the latest beta drivers 14.7 with same result as well.

R9 290X FAN SPEED
Increasing the fan speed to full 100% throttal using MSI after burner appears to help keep the black screens to once or twice a day, but not solve the issue. The computer case I have has eight fans. Four air intake and four exhaust.

Other Thoughts: DON'T BUY AMD, THEY DON'T CARE AND WILL NOT ADMIT TO THE BLACK SCREEN ISSUE.

Pros: fast. runs battlefield 4 great. high fps is around 70 - 80 low fps is around 44 @ultra settings, obviously.

Runs supreme commander great, as well. high fps is 100+ low fps is 30, with multiple nukes and thousand-unit battles.

Cons: runs a little hot under heavy load, especially in supreme commander. but it's been pretty warm outside lately. with the AC on, the card never gets above 60 degrees Centigrade, but my case has excellent air flow.

Other Thoughts: upgraded from a radeon HD 6950. very clear difference.

Pros: Love this card, Handles everything I throw at it without a hiccup, Its very quiet too. Although I do miss shadowplay from Nvidia, I'll make due with this cause just because its pure power.

Cons: I knocked an egg off due to the massive size of this card, I was not anticipating it to be that large, But then again I only have a mid tower, Cooler Master HAF 912 had to remove the mid drive bays to fit this card.

Other Thoughts: I had Orginally wanted a 290x when they were released, But due to price inflation from bit mining the card was fairly costly, But what I paid for it now is WELL worth it In my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns ALMOST everything at max

Pros: I like that this beast is so silent and have good temps when is on heavy load 70C. But I expected to this beast run everything I throw it and it almost did it, until it met Shogun 2 and Rome 2 Total War.

It can be overclock not by much but at least is something.

Cons: Cant play at max Shogun2 or Rome 2. If you dont complain about playing those games at max like me, anything else will just run fine.

I think that rome 2 is the most demanding or intensive game ever for a graphic card.

Other Thoughts: I have played all theTotal war games the older ones because were playable at max by any low graphic of today so I expected that at least Shogun 2 not Rome 2 would be playable at max but nop. That game still knock out some gpus. It isn't so old, the game it has like 3 years and still will make your graphic to suffer and bent to their knees if you try ultra. I tested the games with fullscreen 1980x1080 monitor 144hz at ultra settings. No V-sync .

Even if I cant play those games at max I'm very happy that I would enjoy every next game coming up without thinking> Can I run it? -Of course I can

Pros: This is the best card I have ever had for the money! Runs great and looks great.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: For cons maybe I could have put extremely long and requires a lot of power but what do you expect of a card that will handle ANYTHING you throw at it??? I would also like to mention I was having trouble getting the card to work. The system refused to go to POST when this card was installed. At first I thought it was my power supply which was only 750w that was the problem. So I bought a 1000w and the same thing happened NO POST :(((((. I did alot of research on what the problem could be and I was about to RMA the card when I figured out it was my BIOS. I needed to update it so my motherboard would recognize the card. That was a real gut wrenching experience because I am scared to death of bricking my motherboard but I updated it successfully and it works now. GREAT CARD!!!

Pros: First things first, if there is nothing wrong with your card,. Its great, probably one of the better cooled 290x cards out there. Other than that, its just about like any other 290x.

Cons: here's where the one egg comes in to play as a card manufacturer is arguably more important than the card you're buying and many many people look to xfx for their warranty, this is a huge issue.The very night I got my card I pulled out my 270x and put in the 290x and went about trying it out,thats where the issues started, at random times I would get a lockup on the screen and a reboot, so I uninstalled the drivers, and tried the newest beta drivers,no luck. I then did a clean uninstall of all drivers and traces of catalyst control center, tried literally every version of the drivers available that support this card, doing a fresh install each time, no luck.so I figured OK just to be safe let's try a fresh os install, still getting the same error at differing times,same as before, hmm let's try the 270x again with the same drivers that I get the crash with on the 290x, oh come to find out the 270x runs like a charm on all driver versions,not a single lockup or reboot. OK so then let's try the 290x in a different system, low and behold, it still causes the same crash,270x worked fine in this system as well though. Back to the drawing board on the other system just to be extra safe I made sure the chip set was up to date,(checked all of my drivers actually) tested the PSU, and CPU and the RAM, all were fine just as I suspected. At this point I created a ticket with xfx support thinking on no big deal, everybody is bound to have a bad card get through, and the crash was random, sometimes occuring at windows, other times in games, 3dmark particularly set if off easily but sometimes the whole test ran. The windows system event logs reported a "hyperthread transport watchdog timeout error" after every single crash BTW, also defaulted bios and made sure voltage was constant and in the range it should be. After explaining thisall to xfx , they asked me to try a clean install of the drivers, like I had already told them I did. Then I asked him to read the ticket I created again,then he submitted a request for an RMA, OK finally at least they're taking care of it right? Nope,wrong. Once my RMA is approved Ito be returned to them,I had to pay the shipping on a product that was DOA,so now ive spent more money on a card I can't use. They receive my card and days go by with no response,so I ask them for an update, few more days go by andi get the response, "we've received your card and are testing it, so far we haven't been able to replicate the issue though, I'll try doing a burn in test over the weekend to see if it happens. " this was from the exact same tech that had responded in my support ticket that"oh if its been replicated in two systems its probably faulty". Its been two weeks as of today and a card I paid for, with lifetime warranty, I still haven't been able to use,they still have it. And had to use my RMA before ever getting a chance to,the warranty is lifetime, but not afterthe first exchange I believe. Great card rendered useless by "support"

Other Thoughts: Ive seen a ton of 1,egg reviews for a single bad product,that i dont agree with,like i said everybody is entitled to a mistake here and there,however,With most any product, You're buying two pieces really,the actual hardware,and the support behind it,this personally is what made me choose xfx over another brands card. But offering a lifetime warranty and then making a customer practically light themselves on fire simply to RMA a 500 dollar product that came DOA , after they obviously went through rigorous testing, and then pay for return shipping, only to say you have to test it first and replicate the issue is horrible customer service. I could see if the card was a few years old and had been working fine and suddenly died. But I stand nothing to gain by asking to exchange my fauty card for the exact same card from the same people! I just want a working one this time. Requiring customers to pay to return it, after they just paid 500 bucks for your product is silly to say the least. Asking them to prove it May have problems is another level on top of that, and then replicating it in,no doubt a different and specialized testing environment different from the two environments I experienced the crash,when somebody just wants to exchange the card for a working one,is flat out ridiculous. Sure, if somebody wants their money back, put it through the ringer and do your due diligence. But if somebody buys your card,mainly because the warranty,and they have to jump through hoops and pay more in shippjng simply to exchange a dead on arrival product,then there's no way I can recommend this card currently.

Its as if they're saying "nvm what you've been through with the card and things you've done, we're not going to trust our customers,and the burden is now on the customer,hopefully we can replicate it, or no exchange on your brand new under warranty product. But thanks for your money!"

When your warranty is what sets you apart from your competition, don't let it set you apart in a bad way. Like I said testing and all that is fine if somebody wants a refund or the card is old. But don't make a brand new customer pay more and wait two weeks + to (hopefully) get a working version of the product they purchased.

This has been so bad that even my friend, who has been loyal to xfx for a long time and never needed to use his warranty,has sworn off any future xfx products unless they make this right.

Apart from the support, the card is great, probably the best 290x out there for cooling,and it didn't even get very hot in my all air micro atx case. Things looked great when my system wasn't constantly restarting.

In short , I believe xfx makes good hardware, but that's only one side of what you're buying,and the prospect of paying for something that may not work for you, with almost no recourse should make you question their products for now. I'll update when I know if I'll be getting an exchange or not.

Any DOA electronic can be replaced within 30 days to Newegg. XFX has no involvement in returns or RMA's done by Newegg.

second best course of action...
If you chose to RMA it back to XFX instead contact us and let us know its still within 30 days (ticket and receipt required at xfxsupport.com).
We can issue an RMA and retail shipping label.

Pros: These cards are amazing. Runs anything you can possibly throw at it. Bought a 2nd so i can crossfire and do 3 way eyefinity. Pulls ~60fps in BF4 on ultra at 5760x1080. If you have the money do not wait just buy it especially if it is on sale.

Cons: The only cons I found that I left out of my first review is the PCI connectors. They are extremely close to the shroud and metal heatsink and it actually hurts your fingers if you want to pull the pci cables out. Not going to knock an egg because how often are you really going to be removing those cables anyways, but something the engineers at XFX should take a look into.

Other Thoughts: These cards do run hot if you don't have proper cooling. I have to figure out a better solution for my case because running xfire right now I am seeing 90c even with the cards separated. I actually had to pull the front off my case (Switch 810) and crank up my high rpm and put a box fan in front of my computer. Brought the temps down to about 82. Only have these temps in BF4 though.

Those connectors were admittedly poorly placed. Some customers have even resorted to removing the PCIE snap pins so they didnt have to un-clip them.

4 out of 5 eggs  good card, minor issue

Pros: Very fast, not so noisy as expected. Run all games I tried so far (Tomb raider, Hitman, Thief, World Of a Tanks) at 40-45 Fps at 2560x1440 with all settings maxed out.

Cons: XFX Logo at the back of the card doesn't light up. Not a big deal for me as I was wondering how to turn it off anyway, but worth mentioning and thus -1 egg for QC. XFX Tech support said this might be a led that disconnected in shipment. Aside of that -- everything works perfectly out of the box.

Other Thoughts: The VRAM/GPU does get hot -- saw as much as 80 degrees Celsius, but since the card is designed to work at that temperatures I don't think it is a problem.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent build quality and jaw dropping performance

Pros: The card produced a jaw dropping, stutter-free performance improvement compared to my previous GTX 670 SLI setup. The fans are quiet, even under 100% load. The build quality and style of the card are outstanding, by far the best looking graphics card I have owned.

Cons: Expensive and big. This is a long card - I had to move a hard drive down in order to fit it in my case.

Other Thoughts: First impressions are important. I was impressed with the build quality, packaging, and had no issues upon installing and loading up the latest AMD drivers (14.4). I played Splinter Cell Blacklist and Sleeping Dogs with everything maxed (with 4XMSAA) at 1920x1080 and the I instantly noticed the improvement in frame smoothness and no tearing compared to the GTX 670 SLI.
