XFX Ghost Thermal 2.0 Technology

The New and Improved Floating Heatsink Design of XFX Graphics Cards Provides the Ultimate Cooling Solution

XFX's exclusive ghost thermal 2.0 design creates a floating heatsink with open airflow between the PCB and the cover so that air can quickly ventilate off the card while simultaneously cooling the core process and the components. We've also made major advances from our first generation which includes a heat tested light weight plastic to create an overall lighter thermal which reduces the physical strain on your GPU.

Up to 13dB Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13dB lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty, Low Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

1 out of 5 eggsTHE BENDZOZ

Pros: Card plays all games in great quality on ultra settings...

Cons: After about a year of owning the card ive noticed that the PCB is starting to bend. this has started to effect my pcie slot in my motherbard. i would recommend not having this card installed in a case where any of the weight on the pcb and pcie slots. basically most cases.

its now sitting on a shelf in the workshop waiting on XFX to get back to me. i felt leaving in my system may have caused future damage.

Other Thoughts: if you are bent on having this card consider buying a back plate before you install. or installing it in a system where the card sits better. great performance when it wasn't sitting on a shelf.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Dawn, We're sorry your 290 is bending. Are you sure you have it mounted with the 2 screws and locked tight in place on the PCI-E connector? This card has a stout metal frame under the shroud that acts as its back bone, so it will not sag unevenly is mounted correctly.

1 out of 5 eggsNothing but black screens.

Pros: None

Cons: I've had nothing but black screens from the very begging with this video card. At first I could make it somewhat stable by underclocking the memory. Now it won't even run at all without black screens.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely NOT recommend this card for others.

4 out of 5 eggsGood card

Pros: Plays pretty much anything you can throw at it. Good cooling.

Cons: Annoying capacitor/choke whine when heavy textures are used. Better quality parts needed to stop that. No other issues.

Thank you for the review, we really appreciate you taking the time to write it.

3 out of 5 eggsGood card, requires aftermarket coolers

Pros: Runs any game you want on the highest settings no problem. Very powerful GPU.

Cons: When playing intensive games, it will burn INCREDIBLY hot, from 85 to 90 degrees, literally untouchable. In addition I have a fan failure, which is apparently common. Requested RMA and still haven't been responded to. Slow customer service. Not recommended, better yet get the MSI R9 390.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Daniel,

We're sorry you had trouble with your 290. This model card is designed to run normally at 95'C at full load. We offered the DD cooling models to keep them a bit lower for peace of mind, not necessity. Are you having any temperatures with the card itself? If so, please contact me at the email address below.

Mark at XFX
neweggsupport@xfxforce.com

Also GPU temperatures are much different that CPU temps, they're expected to run 50% hotter. 60'C = 140 Fahrenheit, that is literally too hot to touch. Honestly, you really shouldn't be toughing your computer components when they are running or even immediately after use. For their protection and your own. Thanks!

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Card is great, has been able to handle everything I throw at it.

All in ultra. So far Ive been very happy with my purchase.

Cons: The card is large, and another user had talked about the sag, for me i can see the difference, This card runs hot, 90 to 94c on full load, so hot I also had to buy a cooler for my CPU cause that was dangerously close to overheating.

The sag i believe is generated as a combination of heat, gravity and the heaviness of the card itself. I believe this is what is causing the one problem I have had with the card. Fan Failure. Fans are running annoyingly loud and stopping. Then starting again and repeating process.

Other Thoughts: As a person who works in a technical customer service position I find there Tech support lacking basic customer service skills. Ask a question get a canned message. That didnt even answer the question so I could make a decision on what their canned message was referring to. Im currently waiting patiently after two weeks of back and forth to even get an RMA. No email notification of a message being received from their support. Honestly Ive had a better experience with comcast support then the service Ive received from this company. That says alot. Next Time I will be purchasing from a competitor.

3 out of 5 eggsI would have recommended but

Pros: Until recently handled everything at high or ultra.

Cons: Seems prone to failure.
Runs hot.
Short life.

Other Thoughts: I first bought a card at the end of last year, it was DOA and had to be sent back by RMA. Now, less than a year after that RMA one of its fans are dying and I am not sure if it can still be sent back to be repaired. Previously I owned just one card for 5 years without problem, that card is still working today in another pc. I do not understand why this card seems to have so many issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Danny,

We're sorry oyu are having issues with your 290. If you haven't yet, please email us at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com with your ticket # so we can get your RMA/Replacement process started.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, runs hot

Pros: -Very sleek looking cooler, front logo lights up the anything below the card
-Plenty of copper and 2 very large fans
-Runs every game I've thrown at it without a hiccup. Paired iwth an i5 4590, it blasts Battlefield 4 at ultra 80+fps and plays GTA V at all settings completely maxxed around 45-50FPS.
-Quiet at fan speeds below ~50%
-4GB of GDDR5 on a gigantic 512-bit memory bus destroys games at 1080p and holds its own in most games at 1440p.

Cons: -Quite hot, even at idle. Idles around ~43C. At full load it gets to about ~80C. These are acceptable temps, as the 290 and 290x are made for heat, but it certainly doesnt help the chassis' air temps, or the temperature of a room.
-Quite loud when fans get above ~70%
-Very large card. Not for very small cases. Still fits in my Enthoo Evolv ITX though.
-No active VRM cooling. Doesnt make direct contact with the memory. Would NOT recommend overclocking the memory on this card. The VRM's are fine at stock speeds and don't go over ~90C.

Other Thoughts: Great card and especially great when it's on sale - got it for $230.
Crushes any game and for that price you cannot beat it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review! We are happy you are pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME!

Pros: AWESOME!

- I had last one 1 card for about a year and waited for the price to come down.
- I now have 2 of these in a Crossfire configuration.
- They are incredible.
- I can play any game at full settings at 1080p and still have plenty of resources available.
- My next project is to get a 4k monitor (when prices come down) and do some 4k gaming!

Cons: HOT! HOT! HOT!

- I have always noticed that the XFX cards run a little hotter.
- My CPU (FX-8150) also runs hot, and originally I used air to cool the box. This caused constant restarts, the inside temp would get out of control especially when the cards were under loan. I had to add liquid cooling to remediate this.
- I added CPU liquid cooling (CORSAIR H110) and my heating issues went away completely. I highly recommend it for any gaming machine.
- Although with the summer time now, these cards running anything "intense" (like GTA V, Far Cry 4, etc) the heat is expelled from the machine and into the room. With a hot summer this can boost the heat in a small office 10 degrees higher (very easily might I add) than what it should be, assuming you don't have AC.

Other Thoughts: Build:

- ASUS Crosshair V Formula
- AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 8-Core 3.6GHz (overclocked to 4.2Ghz); cooled with a CORSAIR Hydro Series H110
- G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (4gb x4) @ 2133
- XFX R9-290A-EDFD Radeon 4GB 512-Bit x2 in Crossfire (16x x2)
- ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner
- WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB x4 in RAID 0 (Read: 700mb Write: 650); for storage and games.
- SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB (OS Drive, Win 8.1)

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review, Bradford.

We appreciate your support, and efforts to review our products.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Money but...

Pros: Maxes out most games at 1080p ultra settings and still gets above 60 fps.
Relatively cheap for the performance you get.

Cons: HOT and LOUD
Idles at 42° -55°C at 20% fan speed and usually HIGH 80's °C at HIGH (80-100%) fan speeds under gaming load.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. It sounds like your card is running a little hot which may be an indicator that a fan is failing or you are getting very limited airflow to the case. This card is still within range, however later on, it could be come an issue. We have free replacement fans if you think this is the issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: Had this card since October. Havent had a single issue with it. Overclocks decently (Not that it really needs to be) and can run anything I throw at it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you want the best bang for your buck, buy this card. It's a little pricey but certainly worth it.
