XFX Ghost Thermal 2.0 Technology

The New and Improved Floating Heatsink Design of XFX Graphics Cards Provides the Ultimate Cooling Solution

XFX's exclusive ghost thermal 2.0 design creates a floating heatsink with open airflow between the PCB and the cover so that air can quickly ventilate off the card while simultaneously cooling the core process and the components. We've also made major advances from our first generation which includes a heat tested light weight plastic to create an overall lighter thermal which reduces the physical strain on your GPU.

Up to 13dB Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13dB lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty, Low Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable.

Pros: Looks great with a rebate.

Cons: black screens and computer restarts while gaming.

Other Thoughts: Maybe time to move to Nvidia, Amd has given me nothing but headaches and wasted time.

2 out of 5 eggsdisappointing

Pros: Good FPS Bang for Buck.

Cons: Constant black screens even after using two separate PCI-E cables, I should have gone with a GTX 970, never again will I buy another AMD product, now I have to RMA and sell my card online in order for me to get a stable NVIDIA card

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Couldn't beat it for the price. 3rd XFX card I've owned with zero issues - working great in tandem with AMD FX8350 black cpu, gigabyte GA-970A-D3P board, 8gb, Samsung 250gb 850 evo SSD .

Fits easily in an Enthoo Pro. Have not overclocked - may try when my QHD 27" monitor comes in - currently running a 24" 1080p TN panel and a 21.5in 1080p.

60-120FPS easily with all max settings in WoW. Steady 60fps in Rift on max settings. Respectable benchmarks in 3dheaven (about 1250 score consistently, again not overclocked on the card or the processor). Have not gone beyond 72 degrees after multi-hour usage under load.

This card isn't going to compete with a 290x or nVidia counterparts, however for the price it's stellar - and very cool (one of my main concerns).

Cons: Not free...?

Other Thoughts: Don't overclock through Catalyst Control Center.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat but Hot

Pros: Very high performance. Runs on ultra very well.
It looks beautiful in and out of a case.
It runs very very very smoothly

Cons: It turns my case into a straight up space heater... I've never felt my pc run so hot, it's amazing. I'm going to be investing in a water cooling loop to try and at least bring my cpu temps back down... It's great but, like AMD states, it runs near 90 degrees, which is extraordinary. May want to invest in a XSPC r9 290 block and run some serious cooling to it...

Other Thoughts: Would definitely buy again. Might even run these in crossfire.

5 out of 5 eggsDouble Delight

Pros: Kevin
Silence
Performance
Radeon Rewards
PRICE!

Cons: Power draw
Heat

Other Thoughts: I made the mistake of buying stock cooling, last time I bought an ASUS 7850 with a proper fan and heatsink - I'll never go back. They don't go bad, they cool better, they're quiet, if XFX ever teams up with Noctua I'll have to be devout. That said I am converted, twice I've dealt with XFX and twice I left utterly satisfied with their customer service. Point one is someone who speaks English, which is rare these days, a rep named Kevin helped me sort out the Radeon Gold business(Star Citizen!) to my complete satisfaction, and really buying XFX for the support alone is a wise decision as the other companies will jerk you all over Asia like a Dutch banker.

These cards run hot, that's just how they are, they draw a lot of power, Nvidia had this problem as their architecture path closed and now AMD is there too, the upshot of this is thorough stability not inherent in the new architecture.

I regularly observed my Far Cry 4 FPS using this and an AMD 8350 on 16GB of RAM to be 40+ at all times on High settings with 1080p widescreen, lesser games of course are 60+, a rock solid card indeed.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great! and no longer need that space heater

Pros: I'm able to finally run Dragon Age: Inquisitions on ultra settings getting between 31-38 FPs.

Not really a huge pro, but my Counter Strike Source went from 260 FPS to 295 FPS.

Kicks out a decent amount of heat so I no longer needed to buy a space heater for my room (if you are looking for that sorta thing)

Came with a $30 rebate but time will tell if/when I'll ever get it (8-10 week waiting period)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Main reason I bought this was because my old 6870 (different brand) couldn't support DA:Inquisition for more than a hour on lowest settings before crashing on me. Now I can run it on Ultra with no issues. It also plays all my other games just fine: CS:Source, CS:GO and DBZ:Xenoverse.

Like I mentioned above this beast does kick out a decent amount of heat but that is of no concern to me. It's pretty large as well so make sure you measure your case to ensure it will fit. I'm rocking the NZXT Phantom 410 case which is on the bigger side of mid-sized cases. The card was just short enough (about 1 cm) to allow me to leave my HDD bays in place.

I've also read a lot of people seem to have issues due to their PSU but thanks to my CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 which runs 60 Amps on the 12V rail I was in the clear in this area. (Seriously people do your homework before going and buying a GPU rather than blame the company when it's your own incompetence)

I originally tried to go with the same brand as my previous GPU but when I received it, it only lasted for 15 min before it stopped working all together and I had to RMA, to which I discovered it had gone Out-of-stock. After a lengthy RMA to refund process I was able to turn around and purchase this guy. So this was my runner up choice and I've had no regrets so far after 3 weeks of average gaming use (15-20 hr/wk). Not to mention the $30 Mail in rebate is a nice bonus.

I'm also waiting in anticipation for some of the Freesync monitors to start hitting the market so I can pair them up with this bad boy.

My Build:
AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
XFX Double Dissipation R9-290 4Gb
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 watt
ASRock 990FX Extreme4 AM3+
G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1866
Samsung 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SSD
320 GB Western Digital HDD
NZXT Phantom 410 case
23.5" LG LCD monitor
Logitech G500 mouse
Corsair Vengeance 1500 gaming headphones

1 out of 5 eggsBad design

Pros: performance

Cons: Long, power hungry, compatibility issues, bad return policy, slow RMA. Not well supported. Mine kept randomly freezing my PC (not blue screen, required hard restart)

Other Thoughts: I purchased this while it was on sale with a mail in rebate. I won't be purchasing from Newegg ever again though. Their return policy is unacceptable. Save yourself a headache and purchase from another retailer that will accept returns for refunds when a card is unsatisfactory. Newegg only allows replacement returns within 30 days. Also ,if you take advantage of mail in rebates as you can no longer return the card to Newegg even for a replacement. Once you send in the rebate with the original UPC code, you can only RMA the card with the manufacturer.

I wouldn't recommend XFX cards either. Their RMA process is very slow, they don't allow cross shipping and will cost you postage to send it there. The customer shouldn't have to pay to get a brand new faulty product fixed or replaced.

XFX can't find anything wrong with the card even though its freezing in two PCs I have and when putting my HIS 7850 back in my machine it works fine for days. However, the 290 crashes during gaming and while in windows as well. This is after driver re-installs and driver sweeper.

So it seems I'm stuck with a card that seems to be poorly designed or broken and neither Newegg or XFX will make it right.

Take your money elsewhere.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Driskull,

We're sorry you are having issues with your 290 and we're sorry you are upset. The power requirements and memory usage of a 7850 1GB vs a 290A 4GB are quite different. If the testing team put it under every test and found nothing wrong, despite disagreeing, it still sounds like an issue with a different piece of hardware.

We would be happy to help you resolve any issues are you still having and can help approve any issues you are having with the Rebate or return postage.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

5 out of 5 eggsBest GPU for the price

Pros: I was able to buy this card during a holiday sale for only $215. It plays all of my games at 60 fps and does not have any heat issues as far as I can tell. This card is replacing my old XFX radeon hd 6950 and the difference is extremely noticeable. XFX has a lifetime warranty on their cards and it was easy to register.

Cons: The card is worth it for the right price.

Manufacturer Response:

Excellent, Thank you for the great review, we appreciate the positive feedback. If you need anything or simply have a question, let me know

4 out of 5 eggsGreat (w/software adjustments)

Pros: This card is phenomenal w/software adjustments (see cons below). Switched from an Nvidia based card (good card) to the R9 290.

I play a lot of Final Fantasy 14; if you spend time in the city states, specifically Mor Dhona, often times you'll hear people complain of FPS issues. Usually they hover somewhere around 30-40 FPS. This card coupled with an Intel 4790K running at stock speeds places my FPS at 85+. A very very nice improvement.

I really like the white glow effect however it's hard to enjoy it while the card is upside down in the case :/

You will need a nearly fullsize case or a larger than average midtower in order to fit this card. It's massive. Also, your PSU will need to have the 6+2 and a 6 pin VGA connector. DO NOT use an older PSU and attempt to configure a cable to run this card. First, you WILL experience freezing and second you will likely burn up the PSU. I recommend a PSU Bronze certified rated at minimum 650 ideally 700 watts.

If you truly want the best performance then pair this with a newer chip such as the 4790K or 8350 from AMD.

Cons: Here is, in my opinion, worth dropping an egg. The software. AMD what are you doing? The idea of a lower power state is great for eco reasons but come on!

This feature causes the card to constantly throttle and therefore freeze before crashing FFXIV. The fix for this was to use the newest, non beta driver and uninstalling Catalyst Control Center. You'll need to find a specific program by MSI which will allow you to adjust 2 specific features. I can't/won't link anything here but this has been a good fix for a number of R9 owners 280/290 alike.

Other Thoughts: This card continues to drop in price. I love XFX products and customer service. I would wait for this card to be on discount and/or rebate but you can't go wrong with XFX. Hopefully, they can work with AMD on these freezing issues. I'm tired of hearing that it could be the mobo or PSU etc. Guys, it's not. We all build computers and there are a lot of us telling you there is a software issue. Please fix it.....

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review,

We appreciate the positive feedback. If you are still having issues, i would try a clean install of the drivers without any 3rd party software... this really shouldn't be happening.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
