Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty, Low Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

5 out of 5 eggsI am in love with the XFX Double D!

Pros: Price-
This is an AMAZING graphics card! I recently built a desktop PC and was debating whether to go with a GTX 970 or R9 290. With all the controversy with the 970 only having 3.5gb of fast ram I decided to go with a R9 290. I got this on a Shell Shocker promo and paid a total of $268.74 after tax and shipping, almost 100 dollars less then a GTX 970, and this doesn't even include the $30 rebate card I have on the way. This GPU came nicely packaged and shipped extremely fast.

Looks-
This graphics card is extremely good looking! The double fans on the front, the glowing XFX logo and the side glossy XFX logo make this card look great. I have a window on the side of my computer and I love to just look at the glowing XFX logo!

Performance-
Before I had this card I borrowed my friends EVGA GTX 770 Classified with 4GB Vram. This card, as expected, crushed the 770 in everything I could throw at it from benchmarks to gaming. My friend who lent me his 770 decided to upgrade to a Gigabyte GTX 970 windforce. We compared my XFX R9 290 to his GTX 970 and I was actually getting around the same FPS as him, in every game we tested. Keep in mind he paid $360 and I paid $269 not including a $30 rebate. For 1080p gaming this GPU will perform perfectly. I am sure it is great for 2K gaming or maybe even 4K, but I do not have a monitor to test 2K or 4K. Although the specifications say this GPU needs a 750 watt PSU I have a 550 Watt Rosewill Photon that has ran this GPU and my other components just fine. I have never seen my card go above 70C and have done plenty of "marathon" gaming sessions. While gaming it seems to be around 60-70C which is pretty good. I do have a Rosewill blackhawk case that does have a lot of fans and great airflow so in other cases the card will be warmer. Have not had any coil whine as well!

Drivers-
A lot of people have complained about AMD drivers, but I have had zero issues on the latest non beta AMD drivers on windows 8.1.

Cons: NONE! I have had zero issues!

Other Thoughts: Great price/performance. Performance very similar to GTX 970. Beautiful GPU! My $30 rebate was also authorized in a timely manner as well.

Can't wait to use this to play GTA V and The Witcher 3!

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful

Pros: With the right power supply these cards eats through games like nothing. When the direction states power give these cards power. No piggy backing you must run separate power cables straight from the power supply.

Cons: Hugh, power hungry and no stickers

5 out of 5 eggsBest Bang for the Buck

Pros: Excellent Card! I haven't had any issues. The temps rarely go above 80c at max load and I am using a mid size case (NZXT S340). I try to keep the temps around 65c during normal play. At first I thought the card would not fit because of the case's cable management bar, but there is enough room.

I purchased two of these for Crossfire when they were on sale for $219 each. For most of the games I play, I only needed one for max settings. The temp does not increase much when they are in Crossfire. Tomb Raider at Ultimate settings is incredible with Crossfire turned on. The two cards also look very nice inside the Black NZXT S340 case.

Cons: It does run warmer than I would of hoped for, but apparently it's supposed to run that way. I'm just paranoid when I see temps above 70c.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, though hot

Pros: 1. Fast card with 4 GB of memory. It can handle most games at max settings with little to no lag. Of course, a game like Battlefield 4 with the settings turned up to 200% WILL start to make this card jitter, I must admit. As for watching regular video - I can watch anything on Youtube at 1080p with absolutely no problems.

2. Runs quietly

3. Crossfire ready

4. Looks sexy, plus has some LED lights in the logo portion that...I guess add a little flair to the inside of your case, but are mostly pointless.

Cons: 1. Gets hot, quick (though not unmanageably so). What I mean by this is, it doesn't take much to get this card up to the high 70's, low 80's Celcius when it's under a heavy load, but the fans seem to keep it from getting any hotter than about 83, at least as far as I can tell.

2. Overclocking doesn't seem to do much, or I just wasn't going about it right. Raising the clock speed and core speed and running it through Heaven didn't seem to do much more than raise it about 4 FPS or so on average. No a significant increase at all. So, I'm just using it a factory settings for the moment.

3. The card is huge. You just don't realize how large it's going to be until you actually get it in the mail and take it out of the box. It's obscuring a couple of my SATA ports. Not a HUGE deal considering I'm only using two of them at the moment (and I have six), but still - pretty big. I suppose it has to be though with the amount of heat this beast emits. Not tomention, it's pretty heavy. After installing, it seems like the card droops a little bit in the area facing away from the PCI-e slot. But I haven't seen any performance issues stemming from it.

Other Thoughts: A darn good card for high-end gaming, even at stock settings. Just keep your eyes on the heat that it emits and don't try to overclock unless you have a good knowledge on how to properly do it.

4 out of 5 eggsxfx 290

Pros: very quiet
strong card, overclocked it comes close to reference 290x
classically good looking card

Cons: hot , but not insanely hot
needs a more aggressive fan profile.

Other Thoughts: overall this is a great card for the price I paid for it 269.00. i chose this over the gtx 970 due to the price to performance. for closte to 100 dollars less i feel like I get comparable performance. it overclocks relatively well. i went from 947 basc clock to 1100 with no voltage change and pretty close to 1150 playing with the voltage. Overall I don't think I could have done better at the price I paid.
One last point, i used msi after burner to change the fan profile and it help lots.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Best bang for the buck in terms of raw power. You just can't beat it at 250$. Overall very pleased even with the included cons.

Cons: 1- Fan becomes very whiny at above 70% fan speed.
2- There is a common issue with R9 290s in general. For some reason some of these cards reboot your PC randomly. After a lot of digging around in forums the problem was traced to the base 2D core clock. Basically when the computer is idling or under low load the GPU decreases the core clock to an extent that causes the PC to reboot for some strange reason. Remedy: use Asus GPU tweak to increase 2D clocks to 430MHz. This completely solves the issue. For further details look up "R9 290 random reboot".

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review, we appreciate your feedback.

There are no known issues with random rebooting due to idle speeds. If it is occuring, then any card that uses idle mode (all R and GTX 9 series) will have issues with your motherboard. Please contact your motherboard manufacturer for the newest bios update to resolve this. This is a signal loss issue that occurs on lower quality PSU's that cant maintain 300Ws at 25 Amp consistantly under a heavy load.

If you are having issues with random restarts, it could be overheating. What temperatures are you seeing when this happens?

5 out of 5 eggsBeast card!

Pros: This card is awesome! It doesn't run too hot maybe 60-70 Celsius while gaming which is no big deal. Can play most games on high-ultra depending on which AA I use. Mine has a little bit of coil whine but not even close to as bad as my 7950. Hopefully that fades out soon! Can't beat a lifetime warranty either.

Cons: Little bit of coil whine. High VRM temps around 94.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this card!

Pros: I bought this while I owned a Rosewill Challenger, and it barely fit in there. But it did, and it ran great. I know it is rated to run hot, but I still wasn't comfortable with it. I paired it with a Kraken G10 and Corsair H50, which dropped it 20 degrees. Still need to run more tests, but am still loving it!

Cons: None yet. Runs hot, but they advertise that so not gonna knock an egg off.

Pros: None

Cons: I was able to play vanilla Skyrim for about ten minutes. After that this card completely crashed my whole system. Tried everything under the sun to troubleshoot it, nothing worked. I want my $300 back.
