XFX Ghost Thermal 2.0 Technology

The New and Improved Floating Heatsink Design of XFX Graphics Cards Provides the Ultimate Cooling Solution

XFX's exclusive ghost thermal 2.0 design creates a floating heatsink with open airflow between the PCB and the cover so that air can quickly ventilate off the card while simultaneously cooling the core process and the components. We've also made major advances from our first generation which includes a heat tested light weight plastic to create an overall lighter thermal which reduces the physical strain on your GPU.

Up to 13dB Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13dB lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty, Low Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

Bullet Physics Engine Technology

Get the Most Out of Your Gaming Experience with Real 3D Physics

Take advantage of the 3D Physics capabilities of some of today's newest titles which include completely destructable objects, walls and buildings collapsing from gun fire, real particle effects such as fire that react to the environment and realistic details such as moving hair, water and much more.

Compatible with the Newest Direct X Technology

Meets the Standards of the Newest Games with the Latest Direct X Driver Compatibility

With every new generation of Direct X, major improvements are made which greatly advance the graphics capabilities of games. That's why it is essential to ensure that you are using a graphics card with the newest Direct X driver compatibility so that you'll get the most out of your gaming experience. See the difference for yourself.

Six Times the Tesselation Technology

The Details of Tesselation Make the Difference Between a Flat Dull Surface and a Realistic Bumpy Surface

XFX graphics cards offer the highest tesselation capabilities while still maintaining the higest performance. We don't sacrifice one for the other so you can expect to get the riches detail in your games without slowing down your gaming experience. See bumpy roads, textured fabrics and realistic rippling waters with high tesselated graphics from XFX.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bang for buck

Pros: 1. Best bang for buck GPU currently available.

2. Idles in my system at 35c

3. Highest load temp seen was 72c (in Dirt Rally)

4. Fans have never gone over 40%. It is barely audible in my case.

5. Runs any (well optimized) game on market at 1080p on Ultra settings with acceptable frame rates

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I chose this GPU after reading several articles and also taking advice from a local friend who has another brand R9 290. This is the first time I have strayed from Nvidia and I couldn't be happier.

My system:

Mobo: MSI Gaming 5 z97
Cpu: i5 4690k
Gpu: XFX DD R9 290
Ram: HyperX Fury Black series (16gb)
Psu: Rosewill Photon 1050
Aio: Corsair H100i GTX
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (w/ window)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Great card.

Handles a good load, plays a very impressivly modded Skyrim like it was nothing.

Cool and quiet. Still have yet to go over 65C, looking to watercool at some point still.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Good fit in my case, a little finicky fitting, but that goes with most cards that size anyways.

5 out of 5 eggs500 watt power supply is fine?! Silver Stone SST-ST50f-p

Pros: Silver Stone SST-ST50f-p, which is a modular PSU and it's fine playing games with the xfx DD r9 290.

I was shocked, but hey, happy no need for a new psu.

HTH anyone thinking of getting this card and has the same PSU.

Cons: None so far!! Loven it.

Other Thoughts: I can put the side of my case back on and doesn't heat my room any longer.. lol

5 out of 5 eggsBack to AMD

Pros: Fast card, Not as fast as the two 970's I replaced it with, but for temporary use with my new acer 27 144hz freesync display, this will do unit the 390x comes out. super quite card when not under load, and most games run at 60fps or higher on my 1440p display

Cons: can run 4k like my 970's did but after a few months, I can tell you 4k is over rated right now. Most games seem optimized better for nvidia. if you don't have free sync or plan on wanting to use things like the nvida shield

Other Thoughts: I recently downgraded to a 144hz 2K display with freesync (seeing how it's cheaper that Gsync) and I can say the trade to 2k at 144hz with freesync was well worth it. while I'll have to wait to see what the 390 brings to the table for frame rates. most of the multiplayer game I play can run beyond 60fps with no screen tearing, unless I'm playing a lame coded game capped at 60fps. seriously triple a game companies don't lock my frame rates!!!!

Thank you for the great review. We appreciate your kind words.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns everything I throw at it

Pros: Price - usually about 50 dollars less than other comparable cards, but runs just as well.

High frame rates - running everything on ultra graphics settings, from Arma 2 & 3, H1Z1 to Assetto Corsa, Project Cars, Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim, & Far Cry 4...all are churning out 60+ fps (unless view distance it turned up passed what most a using).

Quiet - Fans work great at keeping temps down and my case fans are louder than these fans, even under load.

Price:Performance ratio better than just about everything.

Have never experienced blue screens or random shutdowns with this card. Any of these issues are probably related more to system conflicts than with the card itself (i.e. inferior power supply).

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: Really love this card. I live stream on Twitch with this card and never have any issues with it. Streaming from a single i7 pc or from a duel pc w/dedicated streaming rig (AMD FX-4100 cpu) with Avermedia capture card, stream is always high quality and high fps, even when recording with Dxtory.
Video editing is also a breeze using Sony Movie Studio 13.

5 out of 5 eggsPrice vs. performance king!

Pros: I've had this card for about a week now and it runs great! I was upgrading from a HD 6950 2GB and couldn't be happier with the results. In 3DMark on First Strike I went from a score of 2815 to 8310 with a 200%+ increase in every category other than physics. I was slightly worried because my PSU is 650W and everyone was saying how necessary it was to have at least a 750W but it works just fine as long as you're not planning on heavy overclocking. I have an older i7-930 2.8Ghz and haven't experienced any bottleneck on my CPU so don't worry about that. I get 50-75 fps on GTA 5 with max settings where before I was getting about 25 on normal so I'm very happy. If you still have questions about your PSU go to CoolerMasters site where they have a Power Supply Calculator that will give you a pretty good idea of how much power you will need with your setup. My temps range from 51C - 71C with air cooling and is almost exactly the same temps as my 6950. This is my first card from XFX and so far I am really impressed with this card. By far the best card I've seen from a price vs. performance standpoint.

Cons: Can't think of any at this point in time.

5 out of 5 eggsLacking Something?

Pros: The card details/specs are as they are advertised. Windows Experience Index (WEI) for the cards performance is 7.8 (highest rating available).

Cons: So far, none about the card, its technically sound and is as advertised. Experiencing issue that may or may not be relative to the card, might be driver conflicts or something else.

Other Thoughts: Motherboard:GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-SOC Force LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (Item#: N82E16813128704)

I have the SSD plugged into the SATA3 6GBps port, not the SATA EXPRESS ports.

The issue I am having, is I play League of Legends, and the game constantly drops down to 15fps and is very laggy loading the game lobby when you find a match. When in game, I have dropped all the settings to as low as they will go, vsync is off, anti-aliasing is off, and the issue doesnt really change. Some games the FPS wont drop and sometimes it drops to 15fps for no apparent reason.

I have tested the video card in WEI and it gets 7.8 and shows as the most updated drivers using the disk drivers, website drivers, and using the AMD software to update the drivers makes no change in that one games performance.

I play other games through steam like "dont starve" and the "the legendary quest for epic loot" and they perform fine but the FPS isnt really a factor for those games.

Is there a known issue with this card, or its drivers, and League of Legends?

This was never a problem on my older, much less advanced machine, and so far, with my new build, I can say that I havent installed anything physically improper and have adequate power to all devices. Does this issue with one game seem like a compatibility issue with the card/drivers or something else?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Jon,

It sounds like there is a driver issue or 3rd party conflict. We have a quick and complete driver installation tutorial that should fix any league issues as it has in the past.

Please email us for the instructions

1 out of 5 eggsAMD R9 290 Radeon XFX Crash problems

Pros: Never had the chance to experience any.

Cons: As the most "critical" review for the product on this site claimed, the card for some strange reason continually reboots your computer a couple minutes after loading up. Now, I also purchased a new 750W PSU from this very site to support the card simultaneously.

With the new PSU correctly installed, card, and new drivers installed, everything seemed to be going great. Computer booted up just fine.- Until it randomly decided to reboot. Each. and every. Time.

There were also times the screen would "flicker" and a little message on the bottom right would give off messages regarding the drivers failing to cooperate.

I have done plenty of research OFF this website and found out that the R9 290x has had quite a history of similar issues...

Thus, I will be contacting newegg to return this product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Christopher,

If you are still having issues with your 290, please contact us for some quick troubleshooting tips. it sounds like a power draw issue, but more testing would be warranted.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: This card has great performance. It gets great frames on max settings on every game I've tried. The cooler on this card is great. Keeps the card cool while also staying quiet.

Cons: It's pretty large. Had to remove an HDD cage to get it to fit. But I knew that before I bought it, so it's not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Would be 5 eggs but I was disappointed when I didn't get a case sticker. I realize this is trivial but this is my first build and this is the only part that didn't come with one.

Thank you for the great review. We appreciate the positive feedback.
