2 out of 5 eggsPoor fan/heat sink

Pros: The card was pretty well priced and performed to satisfaction.

Cons: The heat sink is ridiculously large, making Crossfire practically impossible. The fan was way too loud, and proceeded to fail, causing meltage and card failure after 1.5 years.

Other Thoughts: At least HIS/Lexy Pacific seems to offer a 2 year warranty, so I might be able to get it replaced...

4 out of 5 eggsStill pretty good

Pros: Still runs well, from other owners I have made sure to check the card for fan/heatsink, heat dissipation issues and I have experienced none. So a real benefit there.

Cons: From about the second month on every once in a while the screen would flicker, and then the screen would come back after around 10 seconds. Discovered that it was video driver that would crash and then recover. I had updated drivers across the board for all my components. Read some forums and the solution is to lower the stock memory clock speed from 900Mhz to about 850Mhz or lower until the flickering/video crash stops occurring. After I did that I ran without any problems at all.

Other Thoughts: Even though you have to sacrifice some memory speed the card still works very well. WoW on ultra, Crysis on high. So if anyone was having the same driver problem I was having lower your clock speed.

2 out of 5 eggsfan became super loud, then gpu died

Pros: great performance for the price when it worked; 800+ core / 1100 memory oc.

Cons: well, it just died on me. looking around on newegg, seems like HIS 4870s screw up often like mine.

for the last couple months the fan was really really loud at boot, but would eventually wane to a normal volume after id give the case a few smacks. the last week the fan wouldnt shut up, and i noticed temps creeping up (load gpu @ 99).

i took out the gpu, disassembled the heatsink and 'learned' the problem was the fan itself. i thought maybe it could be the way the fan was attached to the heatsink, but the fan spinning by itself created this ugly virbration. the fan being attached to the heatsink just made the sound 10x worse.

long story short, decent heatsink, TERRIBLE fan.

DO NOT BUY (or buy an aftermarket cooler as well).

Other Thoughts: i dont even remember where i bought my 4870 from, so i cant RMA it from HIS.

gah.

1 out of 5 eggsFAN Will melt

Pros: good speed

Cons: awesome heatsink/fan design.

Other Thoughts: I've had a similar HIS card (4850) with the same type of heatsink/fan. Fan died completely after 2-3 months in an extremely well ventilated case with 120mm system fans.

HIS support is awful. various support emails did not work and it would bounce back. They were requesting to charge me $20+ to ship a new heatsink/fan to me when it should be covered under warranty. Why risk it again on a badly designed piece.

I ended up spending $50 for an independent zalman vga cooling solution.

In the future, I'd rather put this $50 towards a manufacturer with better design and better post purchase support.

2 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service Non-existant

Pros: I bought a little over a year ago. Worked AWESOMELY for about 5 months.

Cons: Quit working. Computer simply will not boot with it in. I have contacted their customer service three times since it stopped working. Nothing. No response, no nothing.

Other Thoughts: Did not want to risk buying and off brand, but I had seen them around The Egg for awhile figured nothing would go wrong.
Will not buy another HIS card period. Not worth the waste of Two hundred dollars. It's incredible a company can sell such a good performing card that breaks and then not show any support for it.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Seemed to be a good price/power ratio.

Cons: DOA.

Other Thoughts: Had no other PCI cards so I had to go buy a cheap $50 card from a local retailer to isolate problem, thus I returned for refund and not replacement. Could see imprint of heatsink on plastic cover, so packaging may be an issue (HIS should use a bigger box). Don't know what a working one is like, see other reviews for that information.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent price for an outstanding card!

Pros: This graphics card is just an amazing bargain for the price! The Core Clock is 750MHz, Memory Clock is 900MHz, and 800 Stream Processing Units. I used to have a Nvidia GTS 250, but after trying this card, I was literally blown away by the increase in FPS on some games. Not only that, but this is also equivalent to a GTX 260 and a HD 5770 in terms of performance, but you're actually getting it for a cheaper price. My FPS for Bad Company 2 went from 40 to 75 FPS with AAx8 at 1366x768 after I installed this graphics card.

It's also significantly quieter than the GTS 250 as well because the GTS 250 sounded like a blow dryer when the fan is running at 65%.

It supports Crossfire as well. So if you're thinking of adding another 4870, then you'll be very satisfied :)

This card needs two 6-pin connectors and at least 500 Watts of PSU! So before you buy this graphics card, make sure you have a quality PSU with sufficient Watts and Amps.

Cons: - It's old.
- It's not DX11.
- It consumes a lot of power.
- It tends to get really hot when running intensive games.
- It doesn't seem like you can adjust the speed of the fan.

Make sure you have proper ventilation in your case because unlike other graphics card that blows air out of your case, this one blows towards the card which can get really hot inside your case if it doesn't have proper ventilation and cooling. You might want to look up buying a PCI Slot Case Fan and place it on top or bottom of this graphics card.

I'm not sure how good the HIS warranty is, but hopefully this graphics card will last me a very long time.

Other Thoughts: Some people are also complaining about the lack of Ramsinks on this card, but my HIS HD 4870 came with Ramsinks as shown in the picture here in Newegg. Maybe because I bought it somewhere else.

5 out of 5 eggsamazing quality/price ratio

Pros: Amazing card. I've been really amazed at how its held its value over the last year. This little gem beats out half the 5000 series cards in performance benchmarks. Currently its running Starcraft II on Ultra settings, ~40 fps.

Cons: Minor heat issues running Starcraft II. This is a known issue at this point with SCII accross multiple Graphics cards though. However I turned up my case fan and I haven't had any problems.

Other Thoughts: This card ran WoW 25 man raids on mostly high settings without much lag issue. However you could stand to get a slightly better one, but theres nothing remotely close in price thats going to be better.

1 out of 5 eggsCard dead

Pros: Great performance while it lasts

Cons: Fan quit, card smoked. HIS RMA thru Lexy is horrible. They make you wait a month or 2 to get a replacement. Guy was rude and hung up on me. Told me most computers have on board video so I wont be without a computer. 10+ years of building machines I have never uesd a MB with onboard video.

Other Thoughts: Never ever I mean ever buy a card built by HIS. They know these have fan trouble. Look at the reviews. What do you do? Go buy another card, guess so, never an HIS product. Buyer BEWARE

1 out of 5 eggsdon't bother

Pros: Performed great for the short time they worked.

Cons: Had to RMA the first one I got after a couple months. RMA took forever and it was a pain. The one I got from RMA had a non-US product number on it and lasted a few months before it puked, except this time it shot flames out the side of my open case. Also it took 6 weeks to get my new card. I decided against RMA since I will never use HIS products again. And yes, my case and power supply are more than sufficient for this card.

Other Thoughts: The stock fan on this thing sound like a vacuum cleaner when playing Mass Effect 2 and still does a poor job of cooling: both cards idled around 68 even after replacing factory thermal compound with arctic silver 5.
