Great card at a great price
- Pros: +Cost! I got it with an MIR and free shipping, making it exactly the price I paid back in the day for the HD4870 512MB it replaced.
+Performance. Out of the box it was running great, but I've already cranked it up to 905 MHz core (from 850) and 1045 MHz ram (from 975) without any trouble at all. I'm sure it'll go higher still when I have time to play more. +Cooling. At ~95% load (via BOINC) the fan is hovering around 35-36% automatically, keeping the core at around 62C and memory around 76C, and it's silent*. The HD4870 it replaced was cranked to 55% fan to keep it below 80C! +Appearance. The stock red shroud HD4870 looked ok, but my color scheme is blue & black, so this black shroud looks way better.
- Cons: -Cooling. I know, I just gave this a + above, so what gives? The setup on this cooler allows for waaaaay more of the air to exit into the case rather than out the vent when compared to the stock shroud. For me a non-issue as a 120mm 3k RPM 140 cfm exhaust fan is roaring away right above it, but it's definitely something to consider if your case does not have good airflow.
-Not an HD5800 series.
- Other Thoughts: * Silent is relative. I've got a 120mm 110 CFM front intake fan at about 80%, two 80mm side intake fans, and a 120mm 140 CFM 3k RPM exhaust fan (which also has an identical fan on my CPU cooler firing at it) at 100% so unless it's louder than that it's "silent" to me hehe.
I don't have 3dmark scores, I can't find my CD. Collatz@Home times at the highest OC I could get stable on the HD4870 were hovering around 14 1/2 minutes @ 720 credits. This HD4890 is hovering around 12 1/2 minutes @ 720 credits, and still has some headroom on the clocks.
System is a DFI LanParty DK CFx board, Q9300 @ 3.226 GHz, 4GB of Mushkin DDR2-1066 (running 1032 @ 5-5-5-15 CR2), and a new Rosewill Green 530 Active PFC PSU in a Smilodon case (who's included PSU died horribly after 17 mos of 100% CPU/GPU load).
Impressed
- Pros: Cheap-and suprisingly it's not a you get what you pay for scenario this is a well built high quality card with an excellent VERY quite aftermarket cooler.
Quite- Can't even hear it over my 2 case fans.
Exhaust hot air out back of case.
Good Performance- I only have a sempron 140 overclocked to 3.7 ghz an with this card it runs every game I throw at it including modern warfare 2, gears of war, darkfall, ut3, all source engine games, Assassins creed all over 60 FPS and to boot im only using a sempron 140 lol.
Good overclocking-Cranked the core right up from 850 to 975 and the memory to 1050 and its stable so far for the past few days. Even at these settings I haven't seen the fan go higher then 68 percent.
- Cons: No memory heat sinks for the GDDR-5 modules but they didn't feel too hot so I guess it's not a major issue
- Other Thoughts: Buy it! Don't bother wasting your money on an OC model this one will just as easily crank up beyong oc model specs for 50-75 dollars less.

B0$$
- Pros: Awesome frame rates in left4dead 2. (100+ on Hard Rain) Price, FAST SHIPPING!
- Cons: My stupidity, took me over a few hours to install before I realised that a few pins weren't getting connection. DOH!
- Other Thoughts: Buy this. Plain and simple. I will be getting another when I get a better mobo that has to PCI-e slots. I hear that crossfire is all the rage these days. Also, I'm coming over from the nVidia side and I'm loving it so far. You can't beat the price to performance ratio that these cards offer.
Destroyer of Cards
- Pros: This card is a beast! I'm getting about 60 FPS in Dragon Age: Origins, 60+ FPS in Borderlands. The 4890 Chews through anyting I throw at it.
Running games at 1920x1080 High Settings 16x AF 4xAA
Remember 60+ frames. Obviously the best card you can get for $180
- Cons: The heat sink is kind of flimsy, but it works perfectly fine!
- Other Thoughts: Specs:
Core i5 750 @ stock speeds HIS 4890 1gb 4GB DDR3-1333 Kingston Memory 500 GB WD HDD 600 Watt PSU
- Pros: Price and performance, low temperatures
- Cons: It wasn't free
- Other Thoughts: As soon as I installed the card I was interested to test the cooling. By default clocks and fan settings and using furmark to stress the GPU, after 20 minutes the highest temp I got on any of the 4 sensor was 85C, and the max automated fan speed was 63%.
After that I was interested to test the overclock a little. using catalyst control center only, no voltage mod, 935 core and 1,000 memory is about as high as I go without artifact in furmark. 935/1000 ran fine in games, so I leave it alone for now.
I set the fan to a manual speed of 80%, idle temps low 40C, gaming temp mid 60C with overclock.
Good buy for me so far
