2 out of 5 eggsDead now. Update. 2013-present 2015

Pros: Played games at medium to high settings with little to no crashes.

Cons: Loud fans. Artifacting. while playing games, minor. card died after 2 years of use.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card late 2013 for my first build. everything worked after 2 days of troubleshooting problems. Played all my games at Ok settings at 1080p. The car had some minor artifacting when playing games at high to ultra settings.. The card was unstable to the end of its life. NO OVERCLOCKING DONE. I will be contacting HIS to see if i can get a Repair or Replacement.

DO NOT BUY RE BRANDED CARDS.

This card is a 7970 pushed to its limits. an old architecture doing things its not capable of. im not the bad seed costumer. did my research and allot of people have problems with this card. make sure you have reliable warranty on card so you can get a replacement if it ever comes down to it. which it probably will.

I was going to be a HIS costumer again...but will be going with other companies like ASUS and MSI if i dont get help from them.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
We are sorry for your situation and suggest you try to check following steps.
1. If possible verify the HIS graphics card on another working system or verify another working card on your motherboard. Need to ensure that the platform is no problem.

Best Regards

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: This card is a beast! It slices through all my games on ultra settings with ease. Thanks to the awesome cooler it runs nice and cool. Topped out at 65 C after hours of gaming.

Cons: Not really a con, but be aware the card is pretty huge. Make sure you have room in your case before you buy.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Graphics Card by itself

Pros: The card is super fast and runs great - by itself.

Cons: I am running two HIS R9 280x IceQ X2 Turbo's (3 GB GDDR5) and my play experience with Battlefield 4 is, eh ok. I am getting too much micro-stuttering and variation in fps, and the design of the game itself is very speculative. I see Hanna's hand sometimes go through a table or boat (depending where she is), something you see from days long past in fps games. If AMD has had this much interaction with a developer such as DICE and titles such as Battlefield 4, then i am not sure of their confidence. I am almost to the point of ditching my GPU's and just getting one GTX 780 or even send the extra bucks on a GTX 980. I contacted the manufacturers and AMD itself and have had little or no response. Also, no one has any answer on the way to deal with the issues.

Other Thoughts: This is my first time researching and setting up a Crossfire gaming rig. I am NOT impressed. The micro-stuttering is too unbearable at times and i actually get better fps and settings with a single card. HIS's customer services is ok at best (tried to contact them regarding differing vbios in the cards).

Again to reiterate, the card runs awesome as a single card in Shadows of Mordor, Rome Total War 2, and even Battlefield 4. Crossfire gives a better depth of detail but the performance is not scaled in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsfantastic card

Pros: After reading so many negative reviews about this card and the cooling issues, I was extremely hesitant to purchase it, but then it went on sale! Lucky for me. I am extremely satisfied with this card. It's fast and runs all my games on the highest settings, tho I am not an extreme gamer. This card crushes Titanfall on insane settings at 4k, I've never experienced lower than 45 fps even in the most hectic situations. Skyrim, modded galore never dips below 50fps at 4k on highest settings. As for the temperature issues others have posted, maybe I just got lucky. Even in the most extreme stress tests this thing doesn't touch 70C. Even at 4k gaming temperatures run cool and I can never hear the fans while gaming.

Cons: One issue I've had is that if it's completely silent in the room and I'm not playing games or anything like that, I can hear the fans making a faint whirring sound. What's even more strange about this is that when I start playing a game or watching a video, the sound goes away. Also when I play older games the whirring sound gets incredibly loud. This is because this card will push the fps on those games up to the 1120 fps range. After adjusting the games settings to stop refreshing higher than 60hz the sound went away. Overall not enough to take an egg IMO

Other Thoughts: I will definitely buy another one down the road

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice card esp on sale.

Pros: Very nice card for the money. Got it on sale and with rebate and was a worthwhile upgrade from an OC gtx 580.

Cons: Manual very basic, limited information.

Other Thoughts: Managed to overclock to 1200/1700 but with the marginal increase in performance left it at stock settings for games. I'd recommend using a custom fan speed profile however.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card, some quirks

Pros: Pretty straight forward install, Gold looks good (ordered when the black HIS r9 280x was listed for $20 more.

Cons: I found that to get triple monitors working, you do need to use an Active mini DisplayPort adapter plus any combination of the other two connections. A little bit of a pain since I didn't know (comparable nVidia cards don't need active adapters).

I currently have 3 23.8" ASUS VN248-Ps up connected via 2 mini displayport adapters + HDMI.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, smokes my old OC 5850's in CF with no problem at stock clock speed.
Overclocking, really have no need to OC it since it runs every game I have at max setting with no problem

Cons: Heat! It gets really hot really fast.

Other Thoughts: Don't use auto fan control in CCC use HIS's iturbo to control the fan speed it might get loud but it won't lock up

4 out of 5 eggsHiS 280x

Pros: -Dual Bios. Great for tweaking your overclocking speeds or if something goes wrong, you can flick the switch and save your card.

-HiS iTurbo. You can use this utility to control your video card. It functions nearly the same as Sapphire's Trixx utility. One thing it has over Trixx is that you can also control the ram voltage.

-Factory Overclocked. If you just want to buy something that is working out of the box and don't want to play the silicon lottery.

Cons: Poor manual overall, tells you nothing about your card or even mentions the dual bios! I imagine a lot of people will overlook it.

VGA-DVI adapter included, which I can't imagine many people even use a vga cabled monitor these days. HDMI-DVI or mini Displayport-HDMI adapter would've been much more useful for most folks.

Fans on this card are questionable. They are meant to be a silent cooling solution on an enthusiast card to be overclocked.

Other Thoughts: Gamers: This card is perfectly fine for gaming, it easily overclocked to 1150 mhz with the stock 1.216 volts and would probably go higher. At these settings the gpu was only at 65c and the fan was quiet. I didn't have much of a reason to find the max overclock as this card pushes out 100+ frames on all of the games I play on max settings at 1080p. I'm tempted to get a better monitor 1440p or something to make better use of this beast of a video card.

Scrypt miners: I get an easy 700k + on this card running at 1050 core 1087 vddc. If you don't lower the volts, the card will shoot up to over 90c+ and keep rising with the fans at full speed. Setting that worked best for me and this card are: -I 13 -g 2 --lookup-gap 2 -w 256 --shaders 2048 -- These settings keep the card around 78c and have been stable.
DOGE Tips :) DHdar8AQg2VfgCWA1PFmcQ2J9roB6LmjD5

All in all, this card preforms fine. I really wish HiS had went with normal fans on this card and it would've went from a good video card to a great one.

Other notes:
Hynix Memory
GPU-Z ASIC Quality: 68.8%
I run this card in a CM HAF 922 Case, temps may vary!
Had to update my motherboard bios before this card would work.

5 out of 5 eggsMe Likey

Pros: Relatively quiet, and cool from factory... Powerful I bought two, and I really only need one... Great software called iturbo lets you overclock play with the fans and voltage too.

Cons: expensive

Other Thoughts: update your drivers!!!! had some minor trouble with a few programs until I updated, solved every issue. not that there were many and by issues I mean ghost recon future soldier didn't run as smoothe as it should

3 out of 5 eggsre-review

Pros: good GPU. nice looking & all. more metal than plastic. not much else to say.

Cons: earlier i reviewed this GPU as a BBQ. & it is. when you order your bbq, you will need to turn down the flames so you don't burn your bacon burger. you can use VBE7 & win 98 DOS to change your vbios if you are familiar with DOS and flashing devices. the stock bios are garbage. 450.00 off the shelf bbq. the GPU cooks food @ 84c, under minimal loadcould probably toast a marshmallow and bakes a potato in about two hours. seriously, what were you guys thinking?

Other Thoughts: earlier i reviewed this GPU as a BBQ. & it was. i had to flash a custom bios and under volt the GPU's to 1.085. after writing and flashing a custom bios and under volting the cards i have them running at 99% load, 720kh/s, 71c @ 67f room temp. had to spend two hours setting up these gpu's. that makes them go from 500.00 after tax, to 600.00 after tax & labor. werent these cards supposed to be in the 300.00 dollar range?
