1 out of 5 eggsRMAed TWICE

Pros: Great speeds! Awesome color! Matches my Gold/Black/Green theme!

Cons: Lasted 20-40 minutes out of the box!

Other Thoughts: I RMAed this twice - and by the second time Newegg no longer had any more of these cards. This card was too good to be true.

3 out of 5 eggsCool Graphics Card

Pros: These cards are very quiet compared to most other R9 290s. Yes, its a physically large card but that's because it uses larger diameter fans which produce more air at less RPMs and that equals quiet operation and cooler temps.

These are also less expensive than most R9 290s or at least they were when I purchase mine.

Cons: I bought two of these cards. The first one I bought is running like a champ after 8 months of non-stop use. The second one has one flaky on me after 5 months. It works most of the time but every few hours it starts reporting hardware errors and it crashes. I just RMA'd it.

As for performance, these cards just do not perform as well as other R9 290s I have used, including the original reference cards. These just run a lot cooler because of the heat sink and fans.

They need 2 8 pin power connectors.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased and used R9 290s from 5 different manufacturers so I can compare them for performance. Many R9 290s are quirky. The motherboard, PSU, drivers, etc. call be issues with these cards. The HIS cards are fairly stable and seem to play well with other components and drivers. I am not sure why they need 2 8 pin power connectors though. I have not noticed that they use more power than the other cards. All of my other R9 290s use 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin - some are faster than these cards so its a mystery to me.

Overall, I won't be purchasing any more of these cards, even for the money. I have an R9 280x that outperforms these cards, although it make more noise.

Since I had to RMA one of my HIS cards, I can give an update on how that goes. It is warranteed for 2 years and mine failed after 5 months so I do not anticipate any problems - but we'll see.

1 out of 5 eggsPaperweight

Pros: Dual Fan - Specs too good to be true

Cons: Major driver issues. Will only work when installed with generic win7 drivers. I thought it may have been the power supply or the motherboard.... ended up replacing both... another $300 on top of this $250 card... same sad story. Freezes up when you install any version of the Catalyst Drivers.

Other Thoughts: CAUTION newegg will not let you return this... exchange only... I will never buy another AMD card again... Stick with Nvidia... the time lost in RMA and shipping back and forth could have gotten me an Nvida card with less head aches. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
We are sorry for your situation and suggest you try to check following steps.
1. If possible verify the HIS graphics card on another working system or verify another working card on your motherboard. Need to ensure that the platform is no problem.
2. If you need further assistant, please feel free to contact our customer service department directly.

Best Regards

5 out of 5 eggsNot Too Hot

Pros: * Temp (Run in a good airflow system)
* Performance
* Cost ($250 at the time of review compared to the cheapest 970 at $320)

Cons: * Took like 10 Years to Wiggle my 8 PIN Connectors into this card.

Other Thoughts: Heat...
When it comes to the 290 and 290X there is definitely a discussion to be had when it comes to heat.
With looking into Graphics Card options to replace my 7850 it became rapidly apparent that people online would say that the 290 runs a little hot and therefore people should just get a 970 instead.
I also knew that one day I would want to Crossfire/SLI whatever card it was that I got. Something I have talked about doing for a long time with past cards but whenever the time came to Crossfire/SLI the card wasn't made anymore.
A lot of people online will say that the 970 is the best card for it's price. When looking into the 290 vs the 970 I found the FPS was generally better on the 970. However compared to the HIS 290 OC the cost was too much. An OC 290 performs fairly close to and sometimes beats a 970. And at the time of purchase this card only cost me $250 versus the cheapest 970 at $320.
All of these aspects out of the way I still had to look at Heat. I have a Cooler Master Storm Trooper Case with 2 AF120 Quiet Editions on the Front for intake, as well as 2 More Exhaust Fans on my Corsair H110 in a Pull Configuration and a final 140 Exhaust on the Back. My System would normally Idle at around 32-36 Depending on the temperature in the room when I had my HIS IceQ X 7850 Turbo installed.
Now with the HIS IceQ X2 290 OC installed the idle is in the 36-40 Range. I also only have my fans set to the Middle Speed Setting on the front panel of the Storm Trooper
Given the performance difference of these 2 cards this is an extremely comfortable heat increase. The 7850 is not nearly as powerful a card and obviously would produce less heat. In saying that though I would highly recommend only getting this card if you have the cooling ability in place to cool off your system.

1 out of 5 eggsterrible card

Pros: Blazing fast when it was working.

Cons: Got this card last week and it worked fine for a few days. Then it decided to die on me the day after I sent in my rebate. Go get something else.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: it looks pretty

Cons: Installed everything and had it working for 20 minutes then crashed. Restarted everything to only have it crash on me again 10 minutes later. Went to restart and now the monitor doesn't turn on with the pc.

Other Thoughts: I tried everything under the sun to make this work but no dice. Was able to plug my old HIS 6870 card in and everything fired right up perfectly. My only conclusion is that it's a bad card. So hopefully the RMA process goes smoothly and I can have another one sooner rather than later.

My Build:
AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
HIS IceQ X² OC Radeon 6870 1GB
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 watt
ASRock 990FX Extreme4 AM3+
G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1866
Samsung 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SSD
Logitech G500 mouse
Corsair Vengeance 1500 gaming headphones
NZXT Phantom 410 case
23.5" LG LCD monitor
Saitek Cyborg gaming keyboard (don't like it)

1 out of 5 eggsIt won't work

Pros: good price within competition

Cons: It doesn't work. I have tried everything to use this card and its becoming clear that I have wasted a lot of money. I have tried several times to contact HIS about what I can do, however without a clear tech support number, this is difficult. All I can find is a place to ask a question, which I have done, and have yet to receive a response. I am very disappointed that I am stranded with no help from HIS. I expected better. Correct me if I'm wrong

4 out of 5 eggsMy bad

Pros: My previous review was incorrect. The issue was not with my graphics card, instead a brand new DVI cable that I purchased was broken, replacing it solved my problem entirely. It's powerful and quiet.

Cons: It's really big

2 out of 5 eggsIt worked great for 3 whole days.

Pros: when it worked it worked pretty well.

Cons: after using it for an extensive period of time (3 days) it began showing me green streaks across my monitor that flicker a lot, and now every so often it blacks out the screen for half a second. It's not the monitor because I tried using integrated graphics and the problem ceased.
