4 out of 5 eggsUpdate Review

Pros: -Decently priced 290, but there are others in this range now if you look.
-Runs the Witcher 3@55-60fps no problem with all settings on high( -Nvidia Hairworks)
-Runs GTA 5@55-60fps all settings on high
-Just going to assume it runs all modern games that do not incorporate some type of Nvidia Gameworks really well.

Cons: -The default fan settings on this card are horrible, and it's likely why so many users have reported the card failing in the first month or so. See other thoughts for more on this.
-It's still ugly, I would love to hear the philosophy behind it the style guide on this thing.
- It's only marked as "on sale" because it occasionally is bumped up to $300 from $249, but that's just business I suppose.

Other Thoughts: So this card shoots right up to 85c when gaming, I have recorded temperatures as high as 89c. This is absolutely horrible for a non-reference cooler. The default settings have this card only kicking into 100% fan speed once it hits 90c, which is a huge mistake IMO. I believe it's the reason so many of them have failed other users.

If you just run MSI Afterburner and set the fans to kick up to 100% at 72-74c you will save this card months, maybe years of life. With this change I was able to bring gaming temps down 14 degrees constant. Doesn't seem like much, but the difference between 89c and 75c is significant.

Also a question for MSI, is there any after market cooler support for this card? I am wondering if the Artctic IV or Kraken G10 would fit?

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Purchased at $259.99, the cheapest 290 available.
-100% power increase from a 6950
-Hasn't died yet, despite the plethora of negative reviews.

Paired with an 8350 I get a 50-60 fps locked GTA 5 experience with all of the settings on Very high/high. The card chugs a little in graphic intensive areas, dropping as low as 45 fps, but for the most part the experience is stable.

Cons: -Ugly as sin, what's the deal with the color palette HIS?
-Why has the card been marked up to $300? I would definitely go with a more popular brand at this price point.

Other Thoughts: Usually peaks at 87c, but not for long. I have heard it's not unusual for these cards to hit 90c, so I suppose the cooling solution isn't awful.

Will update if the card bites it in the next few months.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy 2 cards died

Pros: Nice quick card when it works.

Cons: On my second card and now 48 days after having my second card it quick working. Since I'm past new eggs 30 day policy with a bad card, guess have to fight with HIS for money back. Like they say fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I should have asked for a refund after first card died within 1 week.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice GPU

Pros: 1. Relatively cool for an R9 290.
2. No noise. this may also be because i have default H100i fans running at the same time and those fans do tend to get a little noisy at times.
3. Runs every modern title with at least 30 FPS at ultra. Even the Assassin's creed Unity runs at 40FPS on very high settings.
4 Value - this card costs about 70$ less than GTX 970 and offers 90% to on par (depending on titles) performance as that of GTX 970.

Cons: 1. Size
2. Power consumption under load

Other Thoughts: It's been 7 months now and card has been doing nice. No driver issues, no black screens. hope the performance continues the same way. If power consumption is not a big factor then this card is better value at 260 USD than a gtx 970 which uis around 330USd at the time of writing this review.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked great when it worked

Pros: Easy install. Worked well before it failed.

Cons: Failed after one week of use.

Other Thoughts: No vga detected after a week of use. Verified installing another video card on my computer. I wish their Q.C. department would of picked this up. I'm annoyed.

4 out of 5 eggsGood performance, good price.

Pros: Just about the best price/performance ratio of any GPU out there as of this review.

This version specifically is one of the coolest and quietest 290s available.

Excellent structural rigidity - despite the immense size and weight, the backplate, HSF, and mount plate are very well engineered to tie together and support the card amazingly well.

Cons: AMDs drivers. The last AMD card I used as a gaming card was the 9800 Pro, since it annihilated everything nVidia had at the time. I replaced it within a month with an inferior GeForce - ATI's Catalyst sucked that bad. AMD hasn't made them any better.

I am almost willing to bet that a lot of the BSODs and issues others have reported with this card are driver related.

Other Thoughts: If you are having issues, remember to do a full driver sweep or, even better, a clean OS install when installing a new GPU - even more so if switching GPU manufacturers.

Also keep in mind that the 290s have dual BIOS chips - when having issues, try switching BIOSes and see if that helps. There is a tiny switch that you can find by googling reviews for the card.

4 out of 5 eggsIts good

Pros: So far so good. Enjoying all my games in ultra. Powerful fast card, Looks really nice. I am one of those few people who really like that gold paint job.

Cons: Load temps are kinda hot. At a room temp of 68 the card reached a peak of 82 degrees while playing Planetside 2. Now the Fan Some , sometime the fan will make a clicking noise. It's not Coil whine but a clicking noise and then it would stop.

Other Thoughts: As long as it performs the way it;s doing I do not have any issue. The clicking noise though it's not reproducible every time but if that increases I may contact support.

1 out of 5 eggsRMAed TWICE

Pros: Great speeds! Awesome color! Matches my Gold/Black/Green theme!

Cons: Lasted 20-40 minutes out of the box!

Other Thoughts: I RMAed this twice - and by the second time Newegg no longer had any more of these cards. This card was too good to be true.

3 out of 5 eggsCool Graphics Card

Pros: These cards are very quiet compared to most other R9 290s. Yes, its a physically large card but that's because it uses larger diameter fans which produce more air at less RPMs and that equals quiet operation and cooler temps.

These are also less expensive than most R9 290s or at least they were when I purchase mine.

Cons: I bought two of these cards. The first one I bought is running like a champ after 8 months of non-stop use. The second one has one flaky on me after 5 months. It works most of the time but every few hours it starts reporting hardware errors and it crashes. I just RMA'd it.

As for performance, these cards just do not perform as well as other R9 290s I have used, including the original reference cards. These just run a lot cooler because of the heat sink and fans.

They need 2 8 pin power connectors.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased and used R9 290s from 5 different manufacturers so I can compare them for performance. Many R9 290s are quirky. The motherboard, PSU, drivers, etc. call be issues with these cards. The HIS cards are fairly stable and seem to play well with other components and drivers. I am not sure why they need 2 8 pin power connectors though. I have not noticed that they use more power than the other cards. All of my other R9 290s use 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin - some are faster than these cards so its a mystery to me.

Overall, I won't be purchasing any more of these cards, even for the money. I have an R9 280x that outperforms these cards, although it make more noise.

Since I had to RMA one of my HIS cards, I can give an update on how that goes. It is warranteed for 2 years and mine failed after 5 months so I do not anticipate any problems - but we'll see.

1 out of 5 eggsPaperweight

Pros: Dual Fan - Specs too good to be true

Cons: Major driver issues. Will only work when installed with generic win7 drivers. I thought it may have been the power supply or the motherboard.... ended up replacing both... another $300 on top of this $250 card... same sad story. Freezes up when you install any version of the Catalyst Drivers.

Other Thoughts: CAUTION newegg will not let you return this... exchange only... I will never buy another AMD card again... Stick with Nvidia... the time lost in RMA and shipping back and forth could have gotten me an Nvida card with less head aches. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!
