3 out of 5 eggsFast card, but with some drawbacks.

Pros: So far, this card has proven to be super fast. It doesn't seem any louder than my previous card, though I haven't heard it with the fan ramped up. It idles at 20% fan speed, and any time I've done any gaming with it, I've had headphones on.

Cons: The card is sweet now that I've got it up and running, but getting to that point took way more effort than it should have.

My first issue was that this card is freakishly long. If you have a mid-tower case, I recommend that you measure before you order this. I didn't bother to measure, because the card that I replaced with this one was a really big, dual-gpu card. Much to my surprise, this card was even longer, and I had to remove a hard drive bay from my Antec 900 to make it fit. I was so excited to try out my shiny new videocard right when it arrived at my door, but instead of it taking two minutes to install (like it should have), I wound up having to re-adjust drives, dismantle my case, and re-route cables.

Once I finally got the card physically installed into my computer, I booted it up and installed the latest Radeon driver. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that my computer would no longer output sound. I hadn't used a Radeon card in a decade or so, so I didn't realize that they now come equipped with their own sound processors. I really don't care for that feature, so I wish that it were optional in some way. Their sound junk didn't want to play well with windows 8.1 and my Soundblaster Audigy card. Searching that internet didn't quite turn up answers to my problem, but reinstalling my soundblaster drivers got my sound functioning again. Unfortunately, it still seems to conflict with my soundcard drivers when I boot up my computer, so I have to fiddle around with it each time. This is a major annoyance, and the main reason why I took off eggs from the rating.

Other Thoughts: I was a bit leery about switching from nvidia back to radeon, but I decided to go for it anyway, because a 780ti is a bit out of my budget, and the R9 290x reportedly outperforms the regular 780 by a bit. However, if I'd known that I would be having these issues with the sound card, I would have gladly traded the extra performance for the convenience of not having to reset my sound driver every time I turn on my computer.

1 out of 5 eggsWe'll see how Sapphire's Warranty support is

Pros: Nice card, quite with the three fans, made all the games nice & snappy. Factory OC. No video tearing on Dragon Age & Mass Effect.

Cons: Died after about 2.5 weeks of not heavy use & no OC (past factory OC).

Other Thoughts: Bought card on 6/26, delivered 7/1, installed 7/3 & died 7/19. Computer was left idle, video went to sleep & never came back. Reboot of machine gives BIOS 1 long, 3 short beeps: no video card found.

Changed card out to old one & machine works fine.

I've email Sapphire's tech support. We'll see how they respond. Of course this happened on a Saturday, so it will probably be a couple of days.

This was probably just infant mortality. I had another Sapphire card that lasted for several year & still works.

1 out of 5 eggsDead, Dead, Dead

Pros: The 2nd card worked for almost 30 minutes... That's the only positive I can muster.

Cons: First card arrived dead. RMA'd it to NewEgg, waited 2 weeks and got a 2nd one. Installed the second one, it booted... Yay! Installed the AMD software, rebooted - loaded a game and poof. Dead again. Contacted NewEgg support who started off by telling me it was over their policy and they couldn't help. I had to explain that 2 weeks of my *return period* was eaten up by the first RMA to them. They finally agreed to send a 3rd card.

Other Thoughts: I just built a brand new i7-4790k with an MSI Gaming 7 motherboard and an EVGA 1000 G2 power supply (all purchased from NewEgg). The system runs a Gigabyte gtx670 from my old machine without issues but this $550 Sapphire AMD card seems to be absolutely worthless. Hopefully the third time is the charm? =(

4 out of 5 eggsThis thing is HUGE

Pros: Didn't have a problem with it, hoping it stays that way. 3 decent fans and seems to run decent cool. so far it's ran everything i've put it though with out a hitch

Cons: aside from the price I have none so far.

Other Thoughts: luckily I bought a new full case, otherwise I don't think it would've fit into my old one.

3 out of 5 eggsNewegg and Sapphire won't cover return RMA shipping cost

Pros: Seems to be a fairly nice card when it works. It is extremely cool as advertised and quiet when idle. I will raise my rating if I get a card that works properly.

Cons: Crashes my computer randomly and can take up to 5 minutes for it to switch video modes, leaving my screen blank until it manages to complete the switch (such as switching from extended to eyefinity, or entering into a fullscreen game).

Other Thoughts: Attempting to RMA, but I find it absurd that I have to pay for the shipping to either Newegg or Sapphire and neither of them will cover the cost. This is an expensive card and I feel that I deserve better treatment than this seeing that I have only had the card a week.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: This is an update to an earlier review...

Cons: See previous review under the same name.

Other Thoughts: There were some issues with the driver previously. I went back to AMD's web site after doing some digging and found this:

"Description:
AMD has received feedback that some users are unable to install the Catalyst 14.4 driver on some motherboards with AMD chipsets. We have investigated the issue and have determined that it was caused by the AHCI driver component that was included with the driver package.

We have therefore removed the AHCI driver component from the driver package and will be providing it as a separate download.

If you were affected by this issue, we recommend you download and install this updated version of the driver.

Before installing this driver, please ensure you have uninstalled the previous driver using the Add/Remove programs option in the Control Panel and also deleted the installation folder for the previous driver. This folder can be found at the following locations:

C:/AMD/support/14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql
or
C:/AMD/support/14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-32-dd-ccc-whql

Package contains the following graphics drivers and dependent/required software for the products specified in the current version's official release notes for the 64 bit version of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1:
Display Driver ver. 14.10.1006
OpenCL(tm) Driver ver. 10.0.1348.5
Catalyst Control Center
HydraVision
"

I completely removed 13.12 and installed 14.4 following this method. And the new driver seems to be sticking so far without issues. Hope this helps anyone who has had issues. Also of note... I blew out all old versions of the driver as well and restarted just to be sure it had a clean start.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great until it breaks

Pros: Worked just as expected 100+ FPS in just about every game. The temps were hot but not really thing out of the ordinary for a high end AMD card. Looks great in my case, which is all black with a window looking into the guts of the machine. Fan noise wasn't anything to note as i usually wear headphones and other room fans blowing anyways.

Cons: After about 2-3 weeks the card just died on me. It's fans would spin but no signal would be sent to any monitor. I tried everything to resolve this but nothing seemed to work. I looked it up and this has happened to a decent amount of other people.

Other Thoughts: I was able to RMA so not that big of a loss, just more of an annoyance that i had to ship it back and wait for a new one.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good.

Pros: Fast
low temp
looks good
quiet
set up great out of box
cooling headroom
oc headroom
video card envy
Playing games the way they were meant to be viewed.
144hz refresh, no problem.
etc.

I won't post exact results as that's what benchmarks are for and why review sites spend so much time following meticulous scientific method. But I have no problems reaching 144fps (or more) in any given game. Most of them entirely maxed out with post processing. Faster than light and Terraria never looked soo good. :-p

Cons: This is not a con of this specific card, but I had some driver issues. This doesn't happen to everyone but there are some cases out there (as with everything). I would recommend sticking with the 13.12 drivers for the time being. Maybe try to skip 14.4 and hit the next one when it comes to full release. 14.4 had a shutdown problem on my system, the beta drivers did even worse. This was mostly due to my system being so heavily modified. (ie custom explorer shells and what not) But after a ltitle work, the card runs great and my system is stable.

Other Thoughts: This IS one of the fastest cards on the market, and it's still a relatively new chip. I have confidence that AMD will do what they have done in the past, and that is continually improve the drivers as the life of this product moves forward. If you read early reviews on pre-release samples, there were a multitude of driver issues that do not exist now. Hawaii is a brand new chip, and driver refinement takes time. I also think that AMD was pushing hard to get out some driver optimizations for certain games that refused to work with amd due to the game developers' poorly thought out contracts with Nvidia (fine, i'll say it, the Watchdogs release is a train wreck of manure) . That's another story. I do believe this card will improve drastically with driver updates as they come, and right now, it's rock solid with 13.12. So no big deal. If you are going to install bleeding edge hardware with bleeding edge drivers... you can expect some bumps along the way. I have serious doubts about the "high" tech knowledge of several reviewers that seem to have issues (in general not just on this card). I know for a fact that most systems are not clean enough or stable enough to accept bleeding edge hardware/drivers without issues. Mine sure wasn't. I had not done a fresh install of windows on my system for over 3 years and it was trashed because I modify and tinker. Thus it did not like the drivers and I had conflicts, etc. A component of windows was so heavily modified that it broke. So guess what, fresh install of windows, clean install of all new drivers for ALL of my hardware, and it runs fantastic. Do yourself a favor and be prepared to put in a little time and effort when doing an upgrade and you won't be disappointed about the lack of instant gratification. I think some people are diluted into thinking that they can wiggle their nose and things work magically.

5 out of 5 eggs  happy geek!

Pros: Fast

Cons: Expensive

Other Thoughts: Received in 3 business days. fit perfectly, drivers updated with no issues.
Doesn't seem to run any hotter, fans aren't any more or less noisy than the 7970 it replaces.

No additional OC performed, no additional cooling although fans were set to 75% manually.

Some games had no changes in texture quality or frame rate (Diablo 3, Mass Effect 3, and other similar games) although they were already maxed anyway

Real improvement was obvious in Crysis 3 (maxed settings = 30-110fps depending on scenes with water, lots of reflections, instead of set on high with 20-60 fps)
The 3 free games I picked : hitman, Laura croft both ran well at 60-90fps, thief I haven't played yet.

Overall I'm happy with the card. There doesn't seem to be any more improvement in older, less optimized, or graphically average games, but it really starts to shine when playing newer games designed for high end cards.

Hoping I don't run into the other card failure issues others have posted.

5/5 would buy again.
