The Radeon R9 290 is the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With a massive number of stream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics card configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming, you will leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies is included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

This model is factory overclocked to 1030MHz (947MHz for standard) for smoother gameplay. An array of SAPPHIRE’s premium features, like Vapor-X Technology, Tri-X Cooling solution, Black Diamond Choke, and Full Solid Cap components, makes this card the diehard gamers’ top choice.

  • newegg The Most Powerful, Sophisticated Cooling Ever This card features an array of innovative cooling design, including Vapor-X Technology, Tri-X Cooling Technology, and a PCB Component heat spreader. SAPPHIRE’s innovative Vapor-X cooling technology allows products to run not only cooler, but also much more quietly. A Vapor-X product means a virtually silent gaming experience and more headroom to explore performance tweaking! Sapphire's exclusive triple-fan design pushes out the heat more efficiently than standard dual fans. Along the edge of the card, the PCB is extended and one of the copper layers is left exposed. An additional heatsink mounted directly to this copper layer allows heat absorbed into the PCB from the GPU and other components to be transferred to the heatsink and cooled by the airflow. This feature alone can reduce core temperature by 2°C.
  • newegg Black Diamond Choke and Full Solid Cap Design The choke is an important component of the graphics card. By working with the component engineer, Sapphire’s exclusive choke is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than a normal choke. The graphics card will be more reliable and will save energy. Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors, which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitors for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20°C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten; when the operational temperature increases by 20°C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.
  • newegg SAPPHIRE Temperature LED Indicator Sapphire's LED indicator allows you to monitor GPU temperature in the easiest way.
  • newegg SAPPHIRE Intelligent Fan Control (IFC) With IFC engaged, if this system is running simpler applications such as 2D work or watching video, only one of the three fans will operate (when under 60°C). The noise level is therefore about 20%-29% lower than regular fan setting, resulting in near silent operation.
  • newegg Mantle There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of GCN architecture to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality. It’s a game-changing innovation developed by AMD.
  • newegg AMD TrueAudio Technology AMD TrueAudio technology brings the world’s first programmable audio pipeline marking a new frontier in realism for PC gamers. AMD TrueAudio technology empowers game developers with a programmable audio pipeline on the GPU, inviting them to put their unique artistic fingerprint on in-game audio in the same way that the programmable graphics pipeline brought unfettered artistic vision to PC graphics. Enabled games can feature more realistic environmental dynamics, a richer tapestry of sound effects, breathtaking directional audio and more. AMD TrueAudio technology enhances audio realism by simulating the human brain’s perception of real-world sound, working in concert with the user’s existing audio hardware to recreate a lifelike experience (on supported games).

2 out of 5 eggsits was a good card

Pros: played all my games in high on 32in tv

Cons: i didn't have any problem until now. My card is running hot due to the 2 outside fans not running. I took a look, and saw a burnt chip next to the fan plugs. I'm waiting to hear back from sapphire...hopefully my card holds out..I looked on forums, and there seem to been a lot of people having this problem.for the money i paid for it. i would think it would last at least 2 yrs..i got it 11/8/2014.... its only been a little over a year

2 out of 5 eggsMore trouble than it's worth

Pros: -Great card
-Handled games great when it was working
-The fans kept the card cool even when I gamed for long hours

This card worked really well from the time I got it, 'til a little over a month afterwards. This is when I began to experience problems

Cons: I would be in the middle of doing something and the screen would randomly go black. I'd hold down the power button and turn off the power supply to make sure everything would boot up alright when I next turned it on. This continued to happen multiple times in the same day during the week that I finally just did a clean install of my OS. Thus the nightmare really begins.

I've done 5 re-installs of my OS thinking that something happened during the process that just messed it up somehow. This was when I was still running Windows 7 on my computer. When I finally upgraded to windows 8.1 I thought the problem would fix itself, but it did not. I then did another 2 clean re-installs. Every time I went to install AMD catalyst controller the screen would go black and hang there, and if it didn't stop there I would soon get messages saying that the display drivers had stopped working and recovered.

By now I was pretty upset that I had to do all this just to make sure one piece of hardware was working properly. I've had to taking everything out of the computer case and check them one at a time. Cables were switched out, the power supply checked, the mother board inspected, and each stick of memory has gone through memtest multiple times. The whole thing left me so frustrated that I just took the card out of the case and put it back in it's box. Three months ago i put it back in the case to see if I could get it to work and it still wouldn't cooperate. Days were spent just looking in forums to see how I could fix the problem when I stumbled upon a post that suggested dialing all the clock speeds down from stocks and forcing a constant voltage. I went to try this out, and thinking that since the card is from Sapphiretech their TriXX Utility would be the best option to use, I downloaded it from their site.

Wouldn't you guess that this was yet another complication. The download of the software went smoothly, but the moment I tried to run the program it would crash. To be clear the program would not crash my computer, but the program itself would open and then immediately crash. I couldn't even use it. The only program the worked, and still does, is Afterburner. There were still some problems but after I flashed the bios of the card they stopped. If it were for Afterburner this card would be totally useless.

Other Thoughts: This leads to very recently when I was trying to sell it, and a buyer emailed me to say that my card had been refurbished. I replied to them that it wasn't and was just used, and they then told me that it must have been refurbished at some time because they could see the stamps on it in the pictures. I then emailed another potential buyer that I would no longer be selling the card since I found out it was refurbished, and I couldn't verify why. If this is true it means I product that I bought as new(not open box), was actually refurbished and not disclosed to me. The fact that the problem I experienced could have been caused because the card was refurbished would have helped me greatly in diagnosing the problem.

After a year of owning this card I've been completely turned off from AMD and Sapphire entirely. This whole experience has left a sour taste in my mouth, and when I build my sister's computer I don't want AMD, or Sapphiretech anywhere near it.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a deal!

Pros: -Temps are good considering the stock cooler temps. I normally run around 74-79c depending the time of year and how much I run the AC.
-Got a core clock of 1100 with stock volts.
-Cooler is quiet.
-Power phase LED's are cool
-GPU Temp LED is cool too.
-Card is visually beautiful.
-Lots of GPU power. Overclocked it is very comparable with a 290X, and the Vapor-X cooler just makes getting that performance easier.
-No sag with great backing plate it comes with.

Cons: -eats lots of power. I have my PC on UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) that can measure how KW/h for whatever is plugged it. Up until last month I was running stock clocks. With the overclock in heavy 3D loads I now see an extra 40 KW/h per my UPS. This isn't much of a con at this level of performance, more of an observation.

-Heavy. Sapphire didn't skimp on any part of this card it seems. The cooler framing/cover is metal along with just about everything else on the cooler except the fans themselves.
-I know this is a factory OC card, but on stock volts I have only been able to push my memory to a stable 1440mhz, even if I lower my core clock. Keep in mind that the memory is also cooled via TIM pads which interface the cooler and backing plate. It's still a good OC over the Vanilla 290 at least.

Other Thoughts: I LOVE this card. this is my favorite GPU since my 5870 (also a Sapphire card). The performance is just awesome. It started to feel a tad slow this year with my newly found 1440p gaming ability (thank you AMD for the new VSR feature!). I finally decided to bump the clocks up and I've been happy with the performance increase. It's noticeable in benches and gaming. I have always sold my cards in the past to help fund a new one, but I almost want to keep this one around permanently. If for nothing more than nostalgia. It's got the performance AND the looks. I was able to get this card last year during a sale on Newegg and paid $284. I couldn't be happier with it. If sapphire makes a Fury with a Vapor-X or a Nano I'll be getting one of those too! Bravo Sapphire another wonderful product!

3 out of 5 eggsNot a bad card once you get it working

Pros: Very fast card, handles any game I play or any application I throw at it and virtually never gets warm. The temp changing led's barely get yellow from time to time on auto fan

Cons: I was experiencing the Black/Grey Screen of death on any driver above 13.12; after spending countless hours searching forums, I put in a ticket w/ Sapphire Tech to receive a bios update. I had to send them several pieces of info, including a screenshot from GPU-Z; they then sent me a bios update which requires making a bootable flash drive w/ the enclosed utility. After updating the GPU Bios, I updated to the latest Omega level drivers; and I've had 0 issues since. My system actually got noticeably faster and I feel like I have a whole new PC again. Very pleased.

Other Thoughts: Having built several PC's over the years, and working with all makes, models, brand names, etc. I was very disappointed that it took so long to find a solution to this issue. In today's PC world, if the GPU cards are going to have their own updatable BIOS on them, it should be as easy as updating a motherboard system BIOS.

5 out of 5 eggsCouldn't be happier

Pros: Excellent performance all around, i've been able to OC this card to 1150 Mhz safely without tweaking the voltages or anything, and with a custom fan profile i have set for this thing, it NEVER goes above 59 degrees Celsius, i don't have a very good array of games, but with World of Warcraft and Skyrim (modded) running at 1080p Resloution and all graphics settings set to ultra, this thing never skips a beat. Oh, and did I mention this thing looks sharp as hell inside your computer?

Cons: Not necessarily a con, but this thing is HUGE, and heavy. My only concern is that the PCB of the card will begin to warp over long periods of time due to the length and sheer weight of this card, after two months, though, everything still looks fine.

Other Thoughts: Rarely when coming back to my computer after leaving it idle for about an hour, the monitor won't wake up, but the HDD light doesn't really show activity either so i'm not too sure the card is the cause of this problem, all i do is hit the sleep button on my keyboard and then light it back up and everything works fine again.

3 out of 5 eggsBlack Screen Help!

Pros: For all those having the BSOD NOT BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH BUT BLACK TRY THIS...
I STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE BUT NOT AS BAD NOW WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO IS DOWNLOAD THE TRIXX SOFTWARE FOR THE CARD OK. Then you need to up the speed of your fans from 20 % to around 50% Then you need to underclock your card..... That's right Underclock your card from say 1030 to 980 example. Then the black screens should go away... That's right you I and all of us have paid 300 plus on a card that we have to underclock in order to get it to work yep that's correct...I have all but 1 card in my systems that are AMD..... And this is the only one I have that I have to underclock the card in order to run stable otherwise BSOD....

Other Thoughts: The card should of never been released in this condition I really wanted to give it a 5 egg here at newegg it is not neweggs fault at all its SAPPHIRES FAULT...
where ever I pay 3 times the amount I would normal for A motherboard you would expect it to work... SADLY IT DONT,,,,

5 out of 5 eggsHappy camper

Pros: This card is a Beast! It runs Very cool, with a good fan set up through Trixx. I can play every game I've tried at Ultra or highest settings with a max temp of around 75 C. Frame rates aren't even a question here, This card cuts through games like butter and stays for the most part Silent while doing it.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I had alotta trouble with the drivers at 1st AMD didn't respond to my cry for help until a few days later, by then I had already reinstalled windows so I ignored them right back ;). However the New OMEGA Catalyst is AWESOME and installs with ease. fps are through the roof about 90 avg fps on Sniper Elite 3 with lows in the high 60's and highs around 180! This card is so far well worth my $$ and I certainly recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsUltra like a Killer Instinct Combo

Pros: -Looks pretty sweet. Like if Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat turned himself into a gfx card, this would be it.
-Runs everything really well at max settings
-Triple fans. You can never have too many fans.
-Easy install. It's essentially plug 'n' play, depending on your computer.

Cons: -Despite it's Sub-Zero like appearance and 3 fans, it does not share his cooling abilities. Doesn't ever get crazy hot and hasn't overheated and crashed out on me like my old NVIDIA EVGA card did, but it gets noticably warm during intense high-res gameplay.
-A bit bulky, which again, reasonable for it's performance, but it might give you some trouble fitting it into smaller cases or motherboard, covering up other ports and the like, so keep that in mind.

2 out of 5 eggsGood card but has flaws.

Pros: The card is fantastic. Can run most games I throw at it at max settings.
Runs silent

At about the 4th day having the card it started to black screen on startup. I removed all the drivers and reinstalled the latest.(just recently I did the 14.2 Omega AMD drivers) and nothing. I have to restart my computer about 2-3 times for it to actually stay up. Sometimes it does not work at all and I have no choice but to boot in safe mode and system restore the computer back a couple days.

Other Thoughts: The card is great. It really is. But, the black screen problems are very frustrating and it seems to be VERY common with these cards.
