The Radeon R9 290 is the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With a massive number of stream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics card configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming, you will leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies is included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

This model is factory overclocked to 1030MHz (947MHz for standard) for smoother gameplay. An array of SAPPHIRE’s premium features, like Vapor-X Technology, Tri-X Cooling solution, Black Diamond Choke, and Full Solid Cap components, makes this card the diehard gamers’ top choice.

  • newegg The Most Powerful, Sophisticated Cooling Ever This card features an array of innovative cooling design, including Vapor-X Technology, Tri-X Cooling Technology, and a PCB Component heat spreader. SAPPHIRE’s innovative Vapor-X cooling technology allows products to run not only cooler, but also much more quietly. A Vapor-X product means a virtually silent gaming experience and more headroom to explore performance tweaking! Sapphire's exclusive triple-fan design pushes out the heat more efficiently than standard dual fans. Along the edge of the card, the PCB is extended and one of the copper layers is left exposed. An additional heatsink mounted directly to this copper layer allows heat absorbed into the PCB from the GPU and other components to be transferred to the heatsink and cooled by the airflow. This feature alone can reduce core temperature by 2°C.
  • newegg Black Diamond Choke and Full Solid Cap Design The choke is an important component of the graphics card. By working with the component engineer, Sapphire’s exclusive choke is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than a normal choke. The graphics card will be more reliable and will save energy. Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors, which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitors for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20°C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten; when the operational temperature increases by 20°C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.
  • newegg SAPPHIRE Temperature LED Indicator Sapphire's LED indicator allows you to monitor GPU temperature in the easiest way.
  • newegg SAPPHIRE Intelligent Fan Control (IFC) With IFC engaged, if this system is running simpler applications such as 2D work or watching video, only one of the three fans will operate (when under 60°C). The noise level is therefore about 20%-29% lower than regular fan setting, resulting in near silent operation.
  • newegg Mantle There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of GCN architecture to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality. It’s a game-changing innovation developed by AMD.
  • newegg AMD TrueAudio Technology AMD TrueAudio technology brings the world’s first programmable audio pipeline marking a new frontier in realism for PC gamers. AMD TrueAudio technology empowers game developers with a programmable audio pipeline on the GPU, inviting them to put their unique artistic fingerprint on in-game audio in the same way that the programmable graphics pipeline brought unfettered artistic vision to PC graphics. Enabled games can feature more realistic environmental dynamics, a richer tapestry of sound effects, breathtaking directional audio and more. AMD TrueAudio technology enhances audio realism by simulating the human brain’s perception of real-world sound, working in concert with the user’s existing audio hardware to recreate a lifelike experience (on supported games).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Fast and Quite! Much better card VS my 6990
The Phase fans that only kick in when needed.
3 fans to keep it cool

Cons: The Blue? If you re going for a certain color.

Other Thoughts: This is 50X better than my 6990 and when I say allot quieter I mean Jet VS a Car.
No artifacts and I get alot more FPS.

But save your self $80+ and get this VS 290X

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up to first review

Pros: Still running

Cons: The temps have started rising on the card. I have been blowing it out regularly, but have noticed the temps in the high 70-low 80c. It originally never went over 65c even under the most taxing games. Not sure what to think but have had to us the trixx tool to adjust the fan speeds up to 50 percent. Im hoping this isn't a sign there is something else going on.

Other Thoughts: hoping it doesn't fail

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good!

Pros: This is definitely a solid card! It's very well put together. There is an ON and OFF switch on the end to select whether the two end fans will stay on all the time or only when needed (ON for silent mode, OFF for jet engine mode). I keep all three fans on just so they don't have to crank on and off so much. The Sapphire LED, which changes colors depending on the temp of the card, is a very nice touch. There are also green glowing lights on top that can let you know if the card is in use. This is more of a personal perk for me, but I have a HAF Stacker with nothing but red LED lights and fans; this card has blue designs on it, but the red LED lights in my case make this card jet black o_O Love it!

Cons: These are not cons for me, but could be considered cons for others:
1. This card is long! A foot in length. Consider this to make sure your case can handle it. It is about two and half slots thick, so if you're looking to crossfire, consider this as well.
2. It requires two 8 pin connectors. I got around this by getting two 8 pin to 6 pin connectors to hook up to my power supply.
3. I have noticed that this card seems like it has a power saving mode, where if your screen goes to sleep, the fans will kick off for a bit. After cutting the monitor back on, all three fans switched back on.
4. The green blinking indicators on top of the card could be annoying for some. I can barely seem them due to my case (the HAF Stacker 935 comes with a tower and stacker unit; the stacker unit is on the bottom and the tower sits on top).

Other Thoughts: MY SPECS:
AMD FX-8350 4.2GHz
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX/GEN 3 R2.0
G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB ram (4x4GB)
KingWin 1000w power supply
WD 2TB 64mb cache 7200rpm hard drive
HAF Stacker 935 Two Piece Tower

*As Richard S. mentioned down below in the reviews, it is best to get a program called Trixx (it's free). When I started off playing games, Guild Wars 2 for example, I noticed the card's LEDs quickly jumped to yellow and almost flickered to red. Using HW Monitor (which is also free and allows you to monitor temps in your whole system!), it said my card was spiking over 75 degrees Celsius. After getting Trixx, I made a custome fan profile to keep the card cool, and now gaming never causes my card to go above 66 degrees.

*I use FRAPS to monitor my fps, and all games I have thrown at this card stay at a solid 60 fps.

*I have read other reviews how their cards seem to give out after awhile. So far, my card hasn't shown any signs of giving out as I can surf the net and not get a blue screen (severely knocking on wood here). I use AMDs 14.7 beta driver, and seems to be doing quite well.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card >Power Supply Important<

Pros: Excellent performance when added to a system that is built to support this card, you can't go wrong. The VAPOR-X is a added bonus to cooling. Back plate is a nice addition as well as the fan switch.
For x11 mining it averages 3750 kH with 59c to 69c temps when setup correctly.

If you don't have the extra $ for the 290X then this is a great alternative. Your games will be intense!

Cons: Important - This card will fail if you use a bad power supply! 750 watt minimum. A cheap 750 or even 850 W power supply will cause this card to fail. I have seen this happen in 3 systems I have repaired. Card will artifact if you coin mining incorrectly or game with a cheap or weak power supply. A good power supply will make this card sing!

It does generate heat under load. Case cooling is important.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased more then a few Sapphire video cards in the past. I have never had any problems or a DOA card. I am sure it happens but I feel confident in Sapphire and will continue to use their products until some other manufacturer out does their pricing, quality and performance.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Video Card

Pros: Very powerful card, I have yet to throw anything at it that really stresses it out. The card I very quite even with my case open. temperatures at idle might be 37c and under load so far as high as 44c.

Cons: I have had only two problems with this card that prevents me from giving five eggs. The first is the audio over hdmi. In most cases if I resume from sleep mode tieer is crackling over the hdmi input to my tv. I have tried two different cables and the same results. music is generally fine but movies and games were too much of an annoyance. I have updated audio drivers and that did not work. Last week I bought a dvi to hdmi cable to test a theory and it works. So far I have not had this issue using dvi to hdmi when i resume from sleep and I can use my computer from sleep mode without having to reboot. I believe this is your bug AMD.

My second issue is the black screen of death. i have a750 watt psu in my system and this is my first build so i'm hoping and assuming this things is getting enough power. I read somewhere on the internet that maybe the card does not have enough vram to handle the clock speed or something like that so I reduce the card to 1000mhz in catalyst and generally things are fine.

Other Thoughts: May the future bring better driver support from AMD

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate: Heatsink fans not working

Pros: GPU is still running without issue.

Cons: Two of the three heatsink fans have completely stopped working about 2 months after purchase. Without the cooling solution working properly, the card is heating up rapidly while playing games (up to 90C). Highly disappointing considering this card was performing great while the fans were working. Now I have to go through RMA with the manufacturer since the 30 day return window on Newegg is over. Warning to those who might buy this GPU, its a gamble.

2 out of 5 eggsThree Strikes and You’re Out

Pros: Single card performance is excellent with temps and noise levels very reasonable. The Vapor-X cooler design is large but does a great job with this GPU. No new games but getting consistent 93 fps in BF3 on Ultra settings.

Cons: This is my third card. Out of the box, the first card had artifacts and "Your display driver has stopped responding …" problems and the second card had the black screens. Purchased it from New Egg for my new rig and spent so much time trying to isolate the artifact problem that I exceeded the Egg's return period. Tried twice to unsuccessfully open a trouble ticket with Sapphire (no ticket found) and was finally re-directed to their US Support (Althon Micro) for my RMA. I was told the first card with the artifacts had memory and fan faults and was sent a 'tested' refurbished replacement. The second card exhibited the black screen issue within one day and received a second RMA. Althon Micro would not respond to my request for test results on the second card and, with both returns, I had to pay shipping cross-country. For the third card, I requested that it be thoroughly stress-tested before delivery and though for three weeks it has performed without problems, I have zero confidence that something won't crop up.
Hindsight being 20-20, I would not have purchased this card or, for that matter, an R9-290. Price/performance is great but only if it is reliable.

Other Thoughts: I waited a long time to write this review. Not a new user of AMD (ATI) or Sapphire. Very disappointed in the whole experience. Since my April purchase, the card has only been operational for the last three weeks due to the card errors and RMA process. With respect to the latter, c'mon Althon Micro! Are you telling me that it takes more than a week to confirm that a card is bad? My Confirmed Receipt showed that you were sitting on these returns and it wasn't until my email inquiry as to their status that I received a response.
YMMV but I wish you good luck if you decide to buy this card.
Gotta stop now ... getting too worked up.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat if it worked correctly

Pros: Wonderful cooling, well built, very powerful. A very good and worthwhile piece of technology if it worked properly.

Cons: I've had nothing but problems so far. I'm still hoping Sapphire will pull through, may have to contact Newegg as well. Or if I get more faulty cards, may have to look into other options.

I was unable to fully test my first card until the Newegg RMA month was over, and I found out that the HDMI output simply didn't work when using any drivers besides the 13.12 Catalysts on the disc. This isn't even remotely acceptable, so I had to end up going through Sapphire's RMA process and pay return shipping.

On my second card, the HDMI output works perfectly, but the screen has horizontal flickering lines at desktop clocks, which is absurdly grating and distracting. The latest 14.7+ drivers fix this, at the expense of a system-crashing blackscreen, which never showed up on my previous card. Somehow, fixing the card's problems made things worse, absolutely not acceptable.

So I'm going to have to RMA a second time, hoping Sapphire or someone comes through. After two months of constant headaches, I really wish I hadn't bought this card, and I just hope there will be some kind of satisfactory conclusion.

4 out of 5 eggsGood power to price ratio

Pros: This card runs cool and very quiet. It plays every game I threw at it on extreme settings at greater than 60 fps on a 1080p monitor.
While idle, I get temps around 31 - 35 degrees Celsius, I was able to overclock the gpu to 1280mhz and the memory to 1585 (6340 effective memory clock) Maximum temps while running 3DMark was 77 degrees while overclocked and about 65 without OC.
While overclocked this card is 2 fps faster than my friends non-overclocked 780 ti.

Cons: First card was RMA'd, it had artifacts on the screen unless I bumped up the voltage a bit, then it was fine. I also had problems with black screens while my computer was idle.
The new card does not have any of these problems.

Other Thoughts: Newegg's RMA service was fast and their phone support was great. I just wish I didn't have to cover the cost of shipping since it was a defective item and not any fault of my own.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Card.

Pros: got it for $430 in July 2014. Good price. I had been watching it for awhile. Makes the Xbox One look obsolete.

Cons: First card had to be RMA'd. It would black screen randomly and did not work with my TV through HDMI. The process was painless and quick enough. Tip: call Newegg on the phone so you dont have to pay for shipping it back. Saves you 15-20 bucks.

Other Thoughts: When I got my second one through RMA....I easily put it in and it has worked flawlessly. Its quiet, cool, and runs everything with ease.

I've played Wildstar, Sniper Elite 3, Tomb Raider, Rome 2: Total War, Skyrim, and Bioshock Infinite all on the absolute highest settings and get 60+ fps.

If there is anything wrong when you get it, RMA it. Trust me, this card is so good it should just plug in and go. Get a good card and don't struggle with trying to get a bad one to work.

4 eggs instead of 5 because I had to RMA it once.
