The Radeon R9 290X, AMD's new flagship GPU, offers the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With a massive number of stream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics card configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming you will leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies is included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

This model is factory overclocked to 1030MHz (1000MHz for standard) for smoother gameplay. An array of SAPPHIRE’s premium design features, including Vapor-X Technology, Tri-X Cooling solution, Black Diamond Choke, and Full Solid Cap components, makes this card the diehard gamers’ top choice.

  • newegg The Most Powerful, Sophisticated Cooling Ever This card features an array of innovative cooling design, including Vapor-X Technology, Tri-X Cooling Technology and PCB Component heat spreader. SAPPHIRE’s innovative Vapor-X cooling technology allows products to run not only cooler, but also much quieter. A Vapor-X product means a virtually silent gaming experience and more headroom to explore performance tweaking! Sapphire's exclusive triple-fan design pushes out the heat more efficiently than standard dual fans. Along the edge of the card, the PCB is extended and one of the copper layers left exposed. An additional heatsink mounted directly to this copper layer allows heat absorbed into the PCB from the GPU and other components to be transferred to the heatsink and cooled by the airflow. This feature alone can reduce core temperature by 2°C.
  • newegg Black Diamond Choke and Full Solid Cap Design Choke is an important component of the graphics card. By working with the component engineer, Sapphire’s exclusive choke is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than a normal choke. The graphics card will be more reliable and save energy. Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors, which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitor for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20°C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten, when the operational temperature increases by 20°C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.
  • newegg SAPPHIRE Temperature LED Indicator Sapphire's LED indicator allows you to monitor the GPU temperature in the easiest way.
  • newegg SAPPHIRE Intelligent Fan Control (IFC) With IFC engaged, if this system is running simpler applications such as 2D work or watching video, only one of the three fans will operate (when under 60°C). The noise level is therefore about 20%-29% lower than regular fan setting, resulting in near silent operation.
  • newegg Mantle There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of GCN architecture to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality. It’s a game-changing innovation developed by AMD.
  • newegg AMD TrueAudio Technology AMD TrueAudio technology brings the world’s first programmable audio pipeline marking a new frontier in realism for PC gamers. AMD TrueAudio technology empowers game developers with a programmable audio pipeline on the GPU, inviting them to put their unique artistic fingerprint on in-game audio in the same way that the programmable graphics pipeline brought unfettered artistic vision to PC graphics. Enabled games can feature more realistic environmental dynamics, a richer tapestry of sound effects, breathtaking directional audio and more. AMD TrueAudio technology enhances audio realism by simulating the human brain’s perception of real-world sound, working in concert with the user’s existing audio hardware to recreate a lifelike experience (on supported games).

5 out of 5 eggsShappire Vaopr-X 290X

Pros: When I was up for a new vid card it came down to this or the 780 ti. This was the right choice. My specs are as follows:

i7 3700K
16gb ddr3 1600mhz ram
Sapphire Vapor-X 290X
Gigabyte Z77-HD3
Raid 0 WD 15K RPM 128GB Raptors
3 1TB Drives for storage
Yamakasi 1440p AH-IPS monitor

I run all the latest games at 1440p and max settings, even the bad ports. Dead Rising 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (with ultra resolution texture pack installed), and Ryse: Son of Rome to name but a few. All of them run smooth as silk and even after a 17 hour straight gaming session I never saw temps above 71C. If you want it all then this is the card for you.

Cons: Price, possibly physical size if you have a smaller case.

Other Thoughts: Somewhat pricey, but should last 2-3 years before it is time to upgrade again. When the time comes, Sapphire will be my go to first choice based upon this product.

5 out of 5 eggsSapphire Vapor-x 100326VSXR

Pros: Good build quality
Great performance, puts my old 7950 to shame

Cons: Can get loud with Sapphire Trixx
Some software issues.

Other Thoughts: Previous reviewer mentions BSODs. These can be easily fixed using expand.exe from the command prompt. If you're getting blue screens Google atikmdag.sys errors. Literally a 5 to 10 minute fix.

2 out of 5 eggsOk

Pros: For the price with some tweaking it is a good card that ill play high end games at decent setting. High Bandwidth is something AMD has going for them.

Cons: To many blue screens because of driver issues with the card AMD needs to get it together before they release a product.

4 out of 5 eggsSapphire VaporX R9 290X

Pros: Obviously well crafted with awesome cooling capability.

Other Thoughts: This card is HUGE over 12 inches in length and takes up almost 3 slots. I have 2 large Gigabyte Windforce cards that fit no problem but this was just too big. Cudos to NewEgg for a fast and hassle free RMA.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best 290x on the market!

Pros: I purchased two of these cards for a crossfire setup and I couldn't be more pleased. The 290 and 290x are awesome cards, but they run hot. When they first hit the market, the reference design cooler (squirrel cage blower) didn't do a good enough job keeping the cards cool.

Sapphire has fixed that problem with the vapor-X heat sink with back-plate.

I am heavy gamer and do a lot of video editing so I really put my cards through their paces... I was running a pair of 290's (different brand) and I was seeing temps around 90~100c on the VRM's and 80~90c on the GPU under heavy load. With these Sapphire Vapor-X's I haven't even hit 60c on the GPU and the VRM's are staying under 50c!!! That is just simply amazing for the 290x series cards.

I game at 5760x1080 (eyefintiy triple monitor setup) and these cards just crush any game I through at them. I set my target FPS at 60 FPS and there hasn't been a single game that I can not hit that magical number. BF4, Titanfall, Metro 2033, Crysis 3, I crush them all! The best part of it, these cards pull it off without breaking a sweat.

Cons: Price is high. But if you want the best, you're going to pay for it. way worth it in my opinion!

Another con for some may be power requirements. I have a Seasonic X-1250 and these cards can tax my system. I have a kill-a-watt meter that my PC and three LED monitors (23") are plugged into. The monitors combined draw between 60 and 75 watts.

Under full load, I have seen the kill-a-watt meter spike as high as 1020 watts! Make sure you have a single rail, beefy power supply. DO NOT use adapters. If you're P/S doesn't have the right connections, chances are, is doesn't have the power requirements.

Use a single rail beefed up power supply. (750~800watt single GPU, 1000 watt+ for dual GPU config)

Other Thoughts: I received the Sapphire 290x Vapor X Over-clock edition. I am not a over clocker. If you're into that, more power to ya!

The reason I ditched the (different brand) 290's was the heat. One thing that goes without saying is that the more you over clock, the more heat is produced. Well, the reason I selected these Vapor-X's was because the reviews I read said they are coolest (temperature wise) running 290x's on the market. And they are. Even with the factory over clock.

Sapphire sells 2, Vapor-X 290x's Both are over clocked cards, but one comes with a GPU at 1030Mhz, and OC edition at 1080Mhz. Even though it's not a deal breaker, I was wanting the 1030Mhz because it runs cooler than the OC at 1080Mhz. NewEgg list this card as the one at 1030Mhz.

On the other hand, some buyers may see this is a plus if you're trying to squeeze every last FPS you can. To each their own!

What I did, using Sapphire trixx Over clocking utility was to actually under clock the card to AMD's reference speeds. I set the GPU to 1000Mhz, the memory to 1250Mhz (5000Mhz effective) and set the VDDC offset back to zero. I also set my fan profile a little more aggressive than sapphire's

These cards are plenty powerful at AMDs reference speeds and if you think they run cool using Sapphires over-clock settings, wait till you see how cool the vapor-x heat sink keeps these 290x's at reference speeds.

I've read a lot of reviews about water-cooling the 290, 290x series. Strens does an awesome job listing the numbers and setting this card at AMD reference speeds is the next best thing to water cooling in my opinion. There is no need for water cooling these cards with sapphire Vapor-X and Aero-10 technology.

I can not stress this enough, over clock or not, the Vapor-X air cooler is the best on the market as of 06/09/2014.

I hope my fellow NewEgg geeks can find something useful in my review. The only other thing I can think to add is my system specs to demonstrate system compatibility.

ASUS Black X79
Intel Core i7-4930k (stock speeds) cooled by corsair H110
64GB Kingston Hyper X Black DDR3 1600Mhz
Sapphire 290x Vapor-X (x2 crossfire)
2 SSD in RAID 0, 4 WD HDD SE in RAID 0
2 WD RED as back ups,
Case is Rosewill Thor V.2w
Seasonic x-1250

AS always, NewEgg shipped fast and secure. I would recomend this card to anyone and in my opinion these are the best air cooled 290x on the market.

Thanks for reading my review and I hope you found something useful! Geek On !!!

1 out of 5 eggsStill waiting

Pros: The only Pro is Newegg Premier customer service is actually very good.

Cons: I decided to buy my parts based on a recomendation from a friend. I spent over $3400 on my first order trusting my friend.

The card came USED.... the box was opened plastic removed from the card. scratches. The bubble wrap was ripped clearly showing it was used prior. The pci chipset had normal streaks on it that would clearly indicate that it was installed.

They sent out an RMA and Fedex supposedly left it at my door. My friend was home all day, less than 5 feet from the front door. Fedex never knocked and supposedly left at my door.

Other Thoughts: Even though I had a negative experience..... Newegg Premier seems to really want to try and resolve the issue to keep my business.

5 out of 5 eggs290X-VaporX

Pros: I bought this card while waiting for my 280X-Toxic to return from "rma" after a failing tri-x fan. That card replaced my aging (yet still cranking) 4890 vaporX Cf's. Sapphire really is my AMD aftermarket choice hands down.
After installing the 290x Vapor-X OC, and running it hard for a good week, the fans on auto, playing BF4 ultra settings using Mantle - temps have never gone higher than 71 deg. Celsius and fan speed sits around 45% under load...much quieter than the 280X it replaced. Fps on my enthusiast system sit around 80 fps avg.
The card is a real piece of master craftsmanship through and through, solid, thick and beefy! and a gorgeous addition to my Corsair 540 case.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Another great experience with Newegg, and Sapphire Tech.
