5 out of 5 eggsGreat card got better.

Pros: This is a follow up to my previous review. The fan problem was not card related but rather software related. The newest software and drivers now allow me to set the fan to an inaudible 25% and it keeps the card just as cool.

Cons: I wasn't patient enough.

Other Thoughts: Frog still looks pretty angry.

Manufacturer Response:

I'm very happy you got that worked out!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, free stuff, a bit loud.

Pros: It's a 9800 GT, basically rebranded 8800 GT which was a great card from a great series. For a 100 after MIR it's well worth it over something mid-range. The heatsink and fan on the card keep the temps very low, about 43-45c on the desktop and watching movies and 52-55c playing Fallout 3, Ut3 and DMC4 maxed out.

My card also came with a free, unadvertised on Newegg, key for 3dMark Vantage advanced edition. You have to download somewhere yourself though.

Cons: The fan on the card is loud, especially if the rest of your computer is mostly silent. I've tried to lower the speed through various programs like Speedfan, ntune and vtune which came with the card (and also a very common program that Newegg seems to find offensive) and used a few different drivers too. I could increase the speed of the fan but once I decreased it from its default, it would jump back up to 100%. I think this might be something the nvidia 9 series does from the BIOS, some kind of safe gaurd override that I don't know how to disable. I'd trade a few degrees higher for a quiter system but I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

I wish I could give this a 4.5.

Other Thoughts: The card I got seems to be a bit revised from what is advertised in the picture. My board is red rather than green. The box was also different, with the frog looking a lot angrier and positioned like he was going to back hand me, not that you care but it might frighten small children?

The free copy of 3dmark Vantage was a nice unexpected extra, but I'll probably only use it a couple times, would have gotten more use out of one of those free copies of Tomb Raider Anniversary Palit were handing out with the 9600gt. I guess free is free.

Manufacturer Response:

That's a little strange you can't control the fan speed correctly. If you'd like to return it I'd be happy to replace the card for you.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Capable

Pros: Compared to what I'm used to, it is fast. I'm more of a desktop graphics user than a gamer. Running two high resolution screens works well. The included Nvidia software provides plenty of control over the displays. This is a generic implementation of the GeForce 9800 GT and is well supported by Nvidia with their updated drivers (yes, that is a plus for me). The price was excellent with a rebate. It seems to run cool and I cannot hear the variable speed fan over the other fans in my system(s). Can be overclocked without much temperature gain (variable speed fan?) although I'm not an overclocking fan. Seems well built and heat sink is substantial.

Cons: I was surprised that there were not any other instructions except how to install the drivers. For some, plugging in the PCIE power cables without some guidance may make them queazy. I had a little trouble with recognizing VGA through a KVM switch, but that is not really a standard configuration. I've since switched both monitors to DVI digital. I've had trouble with glitchy images in SketchUp.

Other Thoughts: A lot of card for the money. Maybe overkill for office applications, but hey, you never know when you might want to play a game. I think it's a great card for running a two monitor office setup.

Manufacturer Response:

Hmmmm. Glitchy images? If you keep having problems please send me a screen shot to support@palitmultimedia.com.

I'm getting that application right now and will test it to see if I get the same problems. Send me an email and I'll let you know what I find.

5 out of 5 eggsProduct(s) you should try

Pros: Very good quality,Beefy heatsink,Good price, A company that read reviews of there products on Newegg because our opinions counts to them.

Cons: No pretty girl on the box just a video card that works great.

Other Thoughts: The fan is a little loud at boot but it do quiet down once the drivers load.I been watching this brand here on newegg and seen the good reviews it was getting so I decided to try them myself and glad I did.Newegg has gotten unknown brands and has had real good reviews on them for instance HTomaga sound cards, and this companyPalit which I will buy there products again. Nice going Newegg.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your purchase!

Palit is actually the largest video card partner in the world, we just started selling in the US last year which is why most people haven't heard of the brand before.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: fast, cool, and cheap. what more could you ask for?

Cons: at full speed the fan can get quite loud

Other Thoughts: runs rings around the msi 8600gt i had before, and does so at a lower temperature. the fan runs full blast at system startup until the driver loads at which point the fan quiets down, this can be mildly irritating. the heatsink is beefier and heavier than it appears in the pictures, and it does a great job of keeping the card cool - i didn't see load temps any higher than 15-17 degrees celsius over idle temps. stock clocks are 600/1500/1800 (core/shader/mem).

Manufacturer Response:

Thanks for buying a Palit card!

5 out of 5 eggsOpened Minded

Pros: Good price,Nvidia chipset,Quality Build

Cons: None, no not a one

Other Thoughts: I have never heard of this company but I never heard of HT Omega sound cards or DFI or Gskill but I took a chance on all of them and every last one has been GREAT products for me.Never had any problems with any of them. And this card really is a nice solid card. The heatsink is nice a sturdy (Not that the kids will swing from it) but it's just a nice card at a good price. My rig(DFI P45 Landparty JR,4 gigs of Gskill ram,Intel E8500 wolfdale,PC Lab case you gotta check out this case,500 watt Silverstone short cable power supply. Silverstone will have larger wattage PSU with short cables before the year ends.

Manufacturer Response:

I'm glad to hear you like the card and thanks for going Palit!
