5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Haven't been able to not play a single game on all high settings yet.

Cons: The card is huge. Blocks off my PCI-E x4 slot and comes really close to a regular PCI slot. If you were to fill that slot you'd probably have some airflow problems.
If you're looking for whisper quiet, not for you.

Other Thoughts: Read a lot of other reviews about 4870's running hot. This one doesn't seem to have that issue.

Manufacturer Response:

This thing has some awesome cooling! Glad you like the card.

3 out of 5 eggsPalit 512K

Pros: 4870 best current bang for buck in high performance category. Uses non-reference cooler. The addition of the second fan can help with cooling of the power supply.

Cons: The smaller fan with the 512K version runs at max RPM, therefore it is loud. Somewhat defeats the purpose of this card. The 1MB version ties the small fan in with the large fan so that both can be RPM controlled. The 1MB version seems like the one to choose.

Other Thoughts: Why design a lower - noise design that is louder? Doesn't make much sense.

Manufacturer Response:

Most people don't mind the additional noise so much but I won't disagree that we learned something. You are correct that we addressed this issue with subsequent models.

The sacrifice in making the fan quieter comes in a loss of cooling. With this design we were focused on the best possible cooling we could achieve.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Card, Bad output

Pros: Non-reference, a lot cooler than the nuclear-reactor type reference design.

Cons: Only one DVI output works without giving display corruption. And the display port periodically displays a black picture. What use is a new connector if the screen turns black every 30 seconds?

Manufacturer Response:

Hi there-

Please contact me at so I can work through this with you. Something is obviously not right and I'm not satisfied, as I'm sure you're not, with your result.

Let's get this fixed!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Card. Having problems though.

Pros: Great card for the price. Keeps temps under load low enough.

Cons: I am unable to overclock it over 775Mhz. Even 780Mhz overclock gives a driver crash in Crysis and Stalker, though temperatures don't raise higher than usual.

Other Thoughts: I am kinda confused about all the overclocking bad luck with this card. May be this is not the hardware issue, but i am thinking about exchanging the card for any with reference design. Can't soft voltmod it either because of the non-standard design of the thing. I bought this card with better cooling to overclock and i am unable to do so, that is why i am unhappy. Will try to contact Palit about the issue and update is anything changes.

Manufacturer Response:

Take a look at to see if they have posted anything about this yet. I'm sure they will.

I'm under the impression that some of these cards would "like" to have more voltage to go higher so you're on the right track.

While some stock cards may go higher you sacrifice cooling and therefore lifespan.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Great product, ATI really turned things around with the 4870. Ofcourse I have never heard if palit, but I gave it a shot, because of all the people complaining about heat, and the palit card having duel fans, plus it has a turbo switch, which gives it a small boost, and lets not forget the price on this thing.

Cons: As far as I can tell, it still runs hotter than hell. But apparently not enough to affect performance, so I can live with that.

Other Thoughts: This thing performs excellent, and looks cool. Enough said. I took a chance with palit, and now plan on getting a second one.

Manufacturer Response:

Temps on this are very good.

If you need a crossfire bridge send me an email at and I'll send you one out.

5 out of 5 eggs4870 Palit AE

Pros: Great video card, no rubber banding or clipping in either city of hero's or WOW and that's without running in turbo mode

Cons: really huge(long).. will only fit in first pci slot below pcu with out covering up other plugins and I have 4 pci slots. MSI K9A2 Platinum mother board, might fit in bottom 3rd or 4th slot thought

Other Thoughts: have not had any issues with noise, but I also don't live in my mom's noise free basement. I also have a 600 watt sound system plugged in that hides all 9 fans that are currently running, sweet.

Manufacturer Response:

Zoom Zoom

2 out of 5 eggsthe card overscans my monitor!!

Pros: great gaming card, run all games smoothly in ultra high setting except Crysis and Mircosoft Flight Simulator X...

Cons: my card won't recognize my monitor's(HG216D) native resolution!!! can't set it to 1680*1050 in vista even after i forced off the EDID in CCC! tried it on XP and this thing OVERSCANS my monitor at the native resolution! i updated the driver and tried search for possible solutions online but just can't fix it!!! contacted AMD and they blamed on manufacturer's faulty BIOS instead, now the newegg's return period has passed and i disposed the packaging box of this card...don't know what to do now..

Manufacturer Response:

There isn't any reason this card should not show this resolution. It must just be defective in which case we are happy to replace it for you.

Please fill out the RMA form at to get that process started.

If you could forward me a copy of the conversation with AMD where they said our BIOS was faulty I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see it.

5 out of 5 eggsPhenominal

Pros: The performance and design of this card is fantastic! I haven't used an ATI card since the days of the first Radeon but after reading reviews and talking to some friends who love ATI I decided to give it another shot. I compared this card to some of the others on the market right now and I have to say that I am very, very happy with my choice. I have ordered two of these so far, one for me and one for a friend, and neither one of us is at all dissatisfied. I will definitely go Palit again in the future.

Cons: None right now. I suppose the only drawback is when registering the card with ATI there is no option to select Palit as a manufacturer, but that is hardly the fault of Palit.

Other Thoughts: A lot of the reviewers complain about the fan noise on this card, but I don't think it's as bad as they say. When I power up my computer, sure I can tell that there are fans running, but does it distract me from what I'm doing? Not at all. This is by no means a loud machine (running this card with 6 other fans in the case) but it's not dead silent like some people want it to be.

Go with this card, you won't be disappointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hmmm. I'll go beat ATI with a stick for that.

Noise is very subjective. I don't think it's terribly loud but it also isn't as quiet as most cards either.

Thanks for buying Palit.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great card. Everything is laid out the way cards should be. scored an extra 3.5k on 3dmark06 from my 8800gts 512mb. It has a nice overclock switch on the back so if you want stock speed you can set it back.

Cons: The fan is way to loud. I bought this one because it has the nice heatsink and thought it would be cooler and quieter. tried riva tuner and it is already set at the lowest speed. Its like the front fan is set at full constantly.

Other Thoughts: I would rather have HDMI instead of displayport but oh well I knew that before I ordered.

Manufacturer Response:

Thanks for going Palit.

Fan noise is always a trade off. In this case we've doubled the number of fans usually on a video card to provide the best cooling we could.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost there

Pros: This non-reference 4870 is overclocked to 775/1000mhz in Turbo, giving it a slight edge over other 4870s. The PCB is also much cleaner, slightly shorter (shorter than reference 4870/4850), and has its power connectors facing up, which helps for tight fits (it fits into my Sugo SG1 matx case).

Cons: The darn 70mm fan is loud. I have no idea why Palit didn't just go with two auto-adjusting 80mm fans. This totally confuses me. I would take off a star, but here's a secret I've found. If you have both fans running, the card runs at 54C idle, 65C load. You can unplug the smaller, noisier fan, and still run the card at 60C idle, 70C load - about 20C lower than the reference cards.

Other Thoughts: Why buy a reference for more? Even if you can't come to terms with using the cooler at half its potential by unplugging it, the money you save can go to a way better cooling solution! Then you have great card and cooler!

Manufacturer Response:

Thanks for going Palit!!!

Take a look under the hood. It's my understanding there just isn't quite enough room to go with a pair of 80mm fans and still keep exactly this same form factor.

The 80mm has to be where it is because of where the GPU has to be. That in turn limits the size of the other fan before you run off the back of the board.
