3 out of 5 eggsNot that good for overclocking

Pros: This card looks great! Cooling is excellent and quiet. Even with the fans at 70-80% it is still quiet.

Like other reviewers, I managed to OC the core clock to around 1465MHz (18% improvement) and a memory clock of 1860MHz (about 5% increase).

It's ok because it with this OC it is up to par with the GTX 980 reference benchmarks but it not as good as it could be.

Cons: The voltage is locked at a maximum of 1.212V! Even with the OC+ usb thing connected and using Zotac's FireStorm I still can't unlock the voltage to push more. The software actually gives the option to change the voltage but when I check with GPU-Z it is still at 1.212V. This is very upsetting.

And there seems to be a lot of room for this card because it was at 55-60% TDP when overclocking it!

Other Thoughts: The card has a lot of potential but I'm considering returning it if Zotac doesn't come up with a quick answer to the overclocking abilities of this card. I feel they have not been completely honest in their marketing strategy with this card.

Pros: This card is blazing fast.
Well made material even the fan shroud is not cheap made.
Has great overclocking potential.

Cons: None as of yet will update when some arise.

Other Thoughts: Will definitely get a few more.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent card to begin with, could have great potential.

Pros: This is a great looking card.

Very little coil whine, obvious in some benchmark software but have not noticed any while gaming.

The "Icestorm" cooling solution seems fantastic so far, max temp I've seen is 72c with fans in auto (only going to 55%). This of course could be lowered significantly if I set a custom fan curve. At 33% fan speed the card is virtually silent, at 50-55% fan speed I still can not hear it over my case fans (low noise Noctuas).

*Out of the box I'm able to run 3dmark Fire Strike at 106% power limit, +200mhz core, and +50mhz on the memory. The graphics score for me on these settings is 12936.* At stock clocks out of the box the graphics score came in at 11639, which is still good.

* I would not say this is perfectly stable at this time. I'm still in the process of finding a purely stable OC. At these settings I was able to run both Fire Strike and Unigine Valley bench, it crashed however in Heaven's bench with same settings.

Temps are good so far.
31c @ idle / 72c @ max / 52c @ normal gaming load for me (fans left in auto)

Cons: The voltage is strictly locked down on the card at 1.2000v. This is a BIOS setting and according to some forums Zotac is looking into possibly releasing a bios revision. (This is NOT official, just what some are saying after having contacted Zotac.) My fingers are very much crossed hoping this does happen. If the voltage is unlocked, even somewhat, these cards will have a much higher potential than they do at the moment.

The "OC+" module (the micro-usb thing) seems to have absolutely ZERO functionality at this time...not sure what it's supposed to do but I've not found anything that it does do....? I read that it is supposed to work with Zotac's "Firestorm" overclocking utility but I can not find any mention of it there and the readings are no different than I see in MSI AB or GPUZ. Which brings me to the next point.

Zotac's "Firestorm" overclocking utility is a broken mess that appears to not even function at all. The utility that ships on the disk with the gpu is different than the firestorm offered on Zotac's own website so I'm not sure what's going on there either. I installed the utility off of the disk and the UI doesn't even line up in itself, the image on screen is chopped off and not lined up with the shape it is supposed to be...Even worse though is that when you make any adjustments and click apply nothing happens, the settings do not even take place. I've rebooted and re-installed the software at least 5 times with the exact same results each time. AVOID THIS UTILITY it is simply broken. (For what it's worth, overclocking with MSI AB is 100% effective and straightforward to boot.)

Finally, as it stands right now, the cost differential for the card simply is not worth it compared to it's competitors. The two big players (G1 and MSI 4G) are both better options unless the bios issues are resolved.

Other Thoughts: In general I am very happy with the card. The performance, even at stock, is phenomenal. Coming to this from a GTX 660 is crazy. The physical aspects of the card are great. I love the looks and performance of the cooler. I'm happy with both temperature and noise (or lack thereof). If you for some reason just want this particular card by all means buy it, you won't be upset. If you are buying with the full intent to overclock then I recommend that you either A: wait to see if a bios revision DOES happen or B: look into some of the other options for 970's.

I hope this helps someone. Have a great day!

2 out of 5 eggsBait and Switch?

Pros: Custom designed PCB and power regulation. Dual 8-pin power inputs for a theoretical total power draw of 300 watts! Three slot cooling with 6 heat pipes. OCPlus+ with USB input to the motherboard to modify the voltage for better overclocking. Firestorm software gives advanced readout for better OC management. All for $50 over reference designs.

Easily hits 1.3Ghz on GPU and 2.0Ghz on memory sub system, but so does nearly every other 970 on the market.

Cons: So all these great modifications over the reference design? I'll be able to overclock much further than reference models or other cards on the market??? Nope! Gotcha!

Voltage locked at 1.2v no matter which software used. Cooling helps with the mild allowable overclock of ~1500Mhz boost clock and 2000Mhz memory clock, but any power draw over this average TDP downclocks the GPU. Increasing TDP limit to the measly 106% does nothing to help this design flaw. Reference design models and other manufacturers have gone above and beyond this limitation.

Temperatures are average for a 3 slot cooling design. Guess you will have to pay another $30 for a better cooler on the Extreme edition. The only problem is that they are experiencing the same overclocking issue!

4 out of 5 eggsFustrating and Awesome.

Pros: idles about 30c and with an aggressive fan profile i have NEVER seen it go over 62c during benchmarking with an OC of 1450/4078

Reasonably quiet even at 100%fan speed, it gets audible at 60% , my pc is behind my 42" Dynex tv.

overclocked +185 on the core, reading 1450mhz boost solid stable with no voltage tap 1.200v 106% power target (Afterburner is the BEST) dancing at 60% TDP

memory goes to 8.15Ghz all day long at 8.3Ghz i saw the "stars"

coming from a gtx 560 Ti, then a 290 (died of heat stroke), this card steps up to the plate, well worth the extra cash for a cold running card.

Tripple slot cooler (they all work)

LN2 switch, I am going to play with this :)

Cons: OC+ via USB header (unless you get the Extreme edition, all this does is live readout) I will try flashing the Extreme bios when it becomes available.

Unless i'm doing something wrong i can't even see the live "stuff" from the OC+ USB header with the latest downloaded FireStorm.

FireStorm zotac software.... I am unable to unlock my voltage with this or any other program found. it might be the LN2 switch, but come on!!!

I Have yet been able to unlock the voltage to see the potential of the scalability of this card. (there seems not to be anything helpful on the internet about this)

My card overclocked is at 60% TDP!!! I know i have the headroom, I just want to unlock the voltage and "reap" the power that lays dormant :)

Other Thoughts: i7 3770k @ 5.2 Ghz 39°c idle / 92°c prime 95 max heat / 65°c in most games
Cooler Master Nepton 140XLAIO
ASRock Z77 Extreme3 Motherboard
1600mhz 8-8-8-20 CL1 ripjaws
OCZ Revodrive V1 110gb
6Tb in other drives
6 140mm fans, 2 120mm fans
Rosewill CAPSTONE 750W 80+ Gold

first overclock run with the card in fire strike and i saw an immediate improvement in FPS over my "old" r9 290, end result.... you scored better than 97% of everybody in the world!!! 11,496

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent GPU for the price

Pros: Honestly, this is just an excellent card. Even when playing pretty demanding games, the gpu never goes above 55-60 degrees. The fans are also really quiet, which is nice. As far as performance goes, this is a 970 so it can run pretty much anything at maximum settings at 1920x1080. Shadow of Mordor (without the ultra texture pack, since that requires 6GB), Far Cry 3, Metro 2033 redux, Tomb raider, and so on all run at 60 FPS or better. It does require 2 8-pin power connectors, so make sure you have those available. Not much else to say, this is a great card at a great price.

Cons: I honestly can't think of anything significant. This card is a dream.

2 out of 5 eggsThis is not an overclockers card!

Pros: Looks great, runs nice, not to loud, very solid.

Cons: Total waste if you want full overclocking abilities. Has the extra stuff from the Amp Extreme but you can't use any of it. I feel that I have been lied to about this card from all the review sites that they sent this card to and the advertisments. I feel like I have been ripped off.

Other Thoughts: The card itself is fine and runs very well but I hate knowing I got played by the way they advertised it.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this video card!

Pros: High quality and well built
runs smoothly and quiet, even with my computer door off

Cons: The fan takes up 2.5 slots. It's ok though, no biggie since it still fits in my mini ITX case.

Other Thoughts: I am very pleased with this video card. I can play all my favorite games on the highest res. and it also has very high frame rate. I got this bad boy for my mini gaming pc to replace the EVGA 670 classified. It runs way quieter and faster. The construction of the GTX 970 is well built and top notch. Zotac has been improving their products over the year, can't wait to see what Zotac comes out with next!

4 out of 5 eggsFirst time Zotac buyer

Pros: * One of the shorter variations of the 970.

* Two 8 pin power inputs

* 3 x Displayport (full displayport). 1 DVI-Dual.

* Sturdy and safe backplate and cooler design. I feel it would be very hard to break this accidently by hitting the PCB. It's a very solid card. I counted 6 heatpipes, all leading to the center making contact with the GPU. I also head VRM heatsinks, with the fan being overhead.

* Overclocked with no adjustments to 1300 Core (1400+ with boost), 7.7GHz memory.

* Zotac's overclocking utility shows I'm nowhere close to hitting the TDP this card was designed for

Cons: * Triple slot.

* Thermally limited on my overclock. I've seen my card burst to 1500+ boost clocks when I unlock the power, fan, and temperature target settings. But it never stays there. It tends to hover around 1200-1300.

* Although I personally think my case should handle the excess heat from the card, with thermal limiting it seems you need to feed it lots of fresh air.

* I rather have 3 x mini-DP rather than full. My previous Radeon and cables are mini-DP. Most of my other DP peripherals were similar. Keep it in mind in case you need to buy new cables.

* Two 8 pin power inputs seems like overkill. Perhaps if you water cooled this card, and edited the bios to unlock it to use all the available power. In reality I doubt the bios even allows you to use both 8-pin inputs.

Other Thoughts: Good card overall. I'm not complaining because even with my modest overclock, it's quiet and stays around 85C (that's the thermal limit it likes to stick too).

5 out of 5 eggsUsing this card with Nvidia 3D Vision Surround

Pros: Before purchasing this Zotac VGA card, I purchased 3 Asus VG248QE 3D 144 Hz monitors with the goal of spanning all three with Nvidia 3D Vision Surround, to dramatically increase3D vision from a resolution of 1920x1080 to 5760x1080.

However, for it to work, Nvidia requires that all 3 monitors be identical, and that you use either 3 DP (displayport) connections, or 3 DVI connections, but not a combination thereof). If you want to make an existing VGA card work that does not have the 3 DP's already, or 3 dual link DVI's, it requires adapters. I tried that, and didn't have success.

So I purchased this card because it already had the 3 display ports. I've put in a lot of video cards over the years, but this card really struck me by it's sense of construction. It feels like a heavy duty piece of equipment. It's certainly bigger than any video card I've ever used, and I've got a large case (the big Cooler Master full tower). Not that it was of any consequence, but because of its size, I had to remove the fan shroud from the my case's side panel fan, so that the side panel could be closed.

Since I am not a 'gamer', (at least not yet) I can't really offer an opinion on how this does with games. But on my quest to make Nvidia 3D Vision Surround work, this card has done the job, so I'm very pleased.

Incidentally, some might wonder what the advantage of 3 screens in 3D is. Well, in my opinion, it is stunning. I've tried it with some games (i.e. Assetto Corsa), it it really makes you feel like you're there.

But perhaps what I find most interesting, is using it with Google Earth. Many people might not realize it, but Earth has a 3D mode. And when the 3D mode is spanned across 3 screens, and you are looking at something with Streetview, it's very cool. To get 3D in Google Earth, I changed it's graphic mode to DirectX, and voila everything had depth perception when I put on the glasses.

I might never make it to the Pyramids, but this might help feel like I was there.

Cons: None that I know of.
