1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: Nice Concept.

Cons: Horrible in reality. DVI output is unreliable, picture quality is poor on both SD and HD signals. Audio/Video don't sync well, the menus are very poor, supported resolutions are lacking. On and on with issues.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg should stop selling this, it's junk.

1 out of 5 eggsConclusion

Pros: Avermedia - the company answers their phone.., and I can only say good things about Newegg's service. I do 90% of the purchases for my business through Newegg, and they always helped me out.

Cons: I can't believe Newegg still sells this junk. I had Avermedia replace the product two times! two times!, still the unit runs super hot, delays in closed captioning, poor receiver, etc. I'm sorry to have to say this, but stay away from this product. It is a nice concept, but real poor design, you'd think they'd fix it, add a fan, something...

Other Thoughts: After almost a year, I started getting SPAM/junk email from this company.
Naturally that got me furious.. Fix the product, you bunch of loosers, and do a product recall. If canon can do a recall for a digital camera after 3 years (bad CCD), you can do it too.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

AVerTV Hybrid TV Box 11 needs to be placed in open areas where there is ventilation so it will not get too hot. If the unit is places in closed cabinets with other units that generates too much heat it will cause the unit to get too hot. Please contact Technical Support to troubleshoot the issue so the box can run smoother. If we determine the issue is with the box itself then we can issue an RMA to get another replacement.

2 out of 5 eggsWouldn't have bought it if I knew..

Pros: Does shoes TV on a VGA or DVI screen.
The features it has are nice on the paper, but too bad...

Cons: The captioning lags horribly, if you are like me, I like to read the captions while I listen to the program. The device gets extremely hot, be careful not to touch the connectors, you can get a skin burn. The QAM receiver on cable gets confused, in the station list the text from one station covers the ones underneath making it unreadable so it is not going to be able to replace your digital cable box.

Other Thoughts: If you don't care about captioning, get a cheaper device. If you want captioning, get version 9 of this product, the captioning is much better on version 9 (no lagging, even better readable font. If you do want DTV reception, just get a converter box, and put version 9 behind it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsPros and a few cons

Pros: So this unit does exactly what it says it does, with our without a PC turned on. It puts a TV on your DVI or VGA monitor. The output adapts to the monitor so if you have a wide screen monitor you get wide screen output (even if the source material didn't ask for it) and a 4:3 monitor gets you 4:3 output. No options to letter box the sides or top and bottom if you're media's format is different than your screen.

Another positive is that it goes up to 1920 x 1200 (or 1600 x 1200 for 4:3) and you cannot buy a combo TV/Monitor with similar specs.

Cons: There is one huge issue with this unit, it periodically forgets its settings. Not sure why but if you set it to CABLE-STD for example, it will not tune any channels until you go through "auto program" which can take over 30 minutes! So if you turn it on, and its forgotten its settings you've got about 30 minutes or longer before you can be watching any TV on this thing.

Other Thoughts: Briefly there were some combo PC Monitor/TV tuners from Samsung and others, now there are TVs that can also be useds as PC monitors (but generally max out at the 1080p resolution). As its getting harder to find a monitor that can take S-Video input this is a way to add it to your PC monitor (allowing you to play your game console games on your PC monitor fairly easily).

All in all I'm glad that I bought it, it gave me back a capability I lost when I upgraded from a Samsung 170MP monitor, but I wish it was reliable at storing its setup.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible

Pros: you can technically watch tv with this

Cons: Box keeps locking up, especially in preview mode, channels are grainy and picture is horrible with hd channels. doesn't support progressive scan except in 480p, my old tuner looks closer to hd than this thing. definitely not worth the hassle if you are looking to use a computer monitor as your tv look somewhere else

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Device

Pros: This tuner does do exactly what I was expecting and needed it to do, which is to provide a translucent pip window from component inputs playing a video from my ipod, so I can continue to work, all while not making any alterations to the PC (hardware or software).

If you need to record something to your pc, this is not the right product for you, but if you just want to get an ATSC tuner for an pc monitor or HD TV, or even just want to add some PIP functionality, then this may be the right product.

This is definitely a very innovative product, and for that, it deserves the CES recognition it received.

Cons: You may have to power the unit off and back on if you get into a weird mode and can't get back out. While set to translucent PIP, you can't adjust the translucency, only the OSD translucency.

If you have RGB in you have to do RGB out, this device will not convert to a digital signal for you.

On RGB if your pc sends a blank signal and you have a PIP window open, it will auto change to full screen, but when the signal resumes from your pc, it won't roll back to the original windowing settings.

Other Thoughts: I'm using an RGB connection from my work pc to this device before going to my 24" westinghouse LCD monitor, (work pc, can't install a better video card) operating at 1920x1200@60hz which is the max that this device can handle & is the native resolution of my monitor.

While in PIP mode the OSD only displays in the PIP window (odd but bearable).

I would have preferred that all the connectors be on the back of the unit with the buttons on and the IR detector on the front, but this would've made the unit larger, so not really a con, just a design preference (I don't like to have to see a bunch of cables).

The only PIP choices are 1/4th screen, 1/9th screen, and 1/16th screen combined with either an opaque or ~50% translucent image.

4 out of 5 eggsServicable

Pros: Takes 16:9 input, resolutions up to 1920x1200. Can specify various output resolutions. Output video looks pretty clean. Great variety of inputs and outputs.

Cons: Can't output DVI input to any output other than DVI. No controls for output video frame sizing or positioning (I was pretty disappointed about that). Price seems a bit high.

Other Thoughts: Got this as open box, so price was ok. Haven't tried the digital tuner yet. Gets kind of warm, but so do some other boxes like this I've tried. Remote works fine, but true I am sitting right next to the receiver. OSD took a little getting used to, but it is simple.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The concept of this tuner is well recieved but the performance is lacking.

Cons: The picture quality is poor when compaired with a 12 year old TV, using the same antenna. The remote is erratic, requires close and dirrect aiming at 6ft or less. The picture on all atsc channels (one of which is 4 miles away), will drop out when there is rapid vide change. The color burst is weighted toward mauve, and can't be corrected to a true flesh tone. The method to relolve digital resolution with a 4-3 signal is to create picture in the center of the screen with a grey border arround it. Kind of like viewing a movie through a tunnel. I would like to mention that the tuner gets extreemly hot, enough so that it is unpleasent to touch. Having repaired TVs since 1960 I can state that this heat will cause an early demise or burn.

Other Thoughts: I wanted information about this product before purchase, and tried to call Avermedias tech-line. I left two messages to have someone call and they didn't respond. I purchased the tuner, which isn't supported for Samsung 305t (30") monitor, but I also have a Scepter X20g which was supported. It needs some serious engenering

3 out of 5 eggs2nd Unit update

Pros: great concept

Cons: it seems that this product is not quite refined enough.

1) It runs very hot.

2) It takes some fiddling to get it to power on.

3) when the computer input is selected and there is no sound being generated, there is a noticeable hum sent to the audio out (i checked that it is not present if I bypass this device.)

Other Thoughts: I am now using the second unit after the first one failed after a short while (would not turn on anymore). This unit also has problems powering on, but so far it has been working. I am afraid to ever turn it off which might not be a good idea b/c it gets so hot - that can't be good for it.

I like this product a lot and it is (mostly) working for our needs. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps working.

2 out of 5 eggsYour Milage may Vary

Pros: Excellent Concept. Stand alone no PC software or hardware problems. Potential as a hub for home entertainment system.

Cons: poor execution, Remote is, to be kind, flacky at best, of extremely poor quality, non functional most of the time, the OSD reminds me of how great my windows 3.11 interface was, oops sorry, i'm insulting very early windows GUI, try compare with TI 99 or comondore 64. My cheap 15 year old tv has a more sensitive analog tuner, my old 10 year old MYhd pc tunner has a much more capable digital tunner. Did I mention it gets real HOT?

Other Thoughts: Nice concept, half baked execution. Who wants to fiddle with it over and over again to change a channel in front of friends for what you paid for this? Hold up against IR window, press same button over and over, get it to work? setting is not saved, start over. Great item for folks who have nothing in their history to compare to. Main unit is there, needs latest tuner and in board PS. OSD, or GUI and remote have to be brought up to speed for this price point, understand you can't record with this as with PC tunner. It is well over priced. YMMV
