Pros: The tuner works well with Windows Media Center and operates properly if viewing and recording through Windows Media Center.

Cons: Software is very crude and pretty much worthless.
Must agree with other reviews, product is way over priced.
Could not recommend this to a friend especially not to someone who was technically challenged.

1 out of 5 eggsWont be buying their products again

Pros: Digital over the air signals come in great.

Cons: Tried everything I know to get the ATSC digital signal to come through to my state of the art Acer Aspire Ethos 18.4 inch laptop. I have repeatedly tried both the included software and Windows Media Center. Zippo! This thing will not recognize anything at all out of the Comcast Digital Preferred box that I have to use. Straight out of the cable outlet it will recognize pretty much all of the channels but except for the 8 of the locals, everything of course is locked. I have to go through the converter and this thing won't pick anything through the converter box....not even the unencrypted local channels.

Other Thoughts: Won't let me give it zero stars, but if I could I would. Also...and very important. I was supposed to get a $20.00 rebate on this thing. Followed the rebate instructions to the letter. Never got it. Won't be doing business with them again. Sorry. And again, not Newegg's fault. I bought it through a local competitor of theres in Minneapolis.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Sorry to hear that you're experiencing problems with our TV tuner. The AVerTVHD Volar Max is only compatible with ATSC/Clear-QAM digital signals, if you're using a cable converter that converts digital signals into analog signals then the HD Volar Max will not be able to pick up any channels. For any addtional issues, you may submit a online support ticket at http://support.avermedia-usa.com

For rebate issues, you may check your rebate status at http://www.status-now.com or contact us at 1-800-953-3098.

Best,

5 out of 5 eggsSmooth - in my application

Pros: Literally plug and play. Hot plug in with antenna attached, click on "Next," "OK," "Yeah I accept all your ridiculous terms and conditions," or "herp-derp" a few times and you're good to go.

Note carefully that I have probably the absolute perfect application for this gadget. I have a strong OTA antenna, Windows 7 MCE, and a HTPC with an HDMI out to the TV.

Cons: I personally have zero cons for this. However, if you're using it with cable, or you don't have Windows 7 MC, read the other reviews carefully.

Other Thoughts: I love it. Absolutely would not change a thing. Solved a bunch of problems for us - but I have the 100.0000% perfect application.

2 out of 5 eggsOverpriced

Pros: It still works several years later. It works relatively easy and without much effort to set up.

Cons: serious lack of support over the long term. I own a older H826D which this replaced. No software updates.
The media center is still dated from 2009. For my specific model number there is no support for win7. BUt they push you to this model number and it does show win7 drivers available..
Can't play Flac files in the music section. which would be a great feature to be added.

Other Thoughts: The device works for catching some tv, the aerial is strong enough to get all the local channels. I just will weigh what updates are worth to me when I need to replace this. I may come back and buy another or I may find another vendor that updates a little more frequent. Of course I will not trade stability for more frequent updates. Nor would I like to see a simple interface become bloated and complicated like a lot of applications seem to do over their lifetime.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

AVerTVHD Volar Max latest drivers ad software can be downloaded from our website listed here. http://www.avermedia-usa.com/avertv/Support/Download.aspx?Type=APDriver&tab=APDriver&id=472

Unfortunately AVer MediaCenter currently does not support FLAC.

Please contact Technical Support if you have any questions.

4 out of 5 eggsGood tuner, UI needs work

Pros: Does exactly the job it should, for less than the cost of 1 month of DVR from a cable company. I really liked that I could schedule a night-time recording and it woke my Mac Mini to record it!

Cons: Didn't work "out of the box" - I had to download the latest AverTV software before it could find the device. The UI isn't particularly intuitive - I've never had to crack open a manual for other DVR solutions. I'd like to see more shortcuts, maybe have the EPG and channel manager integrated so you can change channel while browsing schedule - also LARGER FONTS for the EPG page! Picture-in-picture comes up in front of the onscreen menu so you can't get rid of it.

Other Thoughts: Is there any way to schedule "record all new episodes"? Easy enough to set up a weekly repeat recording but that's a time-based schedule, not a show-based one.

1 out of 5 eggsWouldn't recommend

Pros: Quick install, when it works it works decently. Surprised at how well it receives signal. Installed it on my iMac and it worked well for a little while.

Cons: Died after 8 months but I didn't realize it until I used it next which was just after the year warranty was up. Obviously it is not something I use often, since there was a 4 month gap in between the time I used it last (when it was working) and when I used it next and it wasn't. For $50, I expect that it would work for longer than a year, especially for as little as I used it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We provide one year warranty from the date of purchase for repair or replace. Please contact us to troubleshoot the issue to determine if the unit is defective or not.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat with Win7

Pros: It works perfectly with Windows 7. It works out of the box with Windows Media Center and it tunes in the ClearQAM channels from the cable provider.

Cons: I hear that the included software sucks.... I don't know I didn't fool with it. It doesn't tune analog channels but that's quite obvious if you can read the description.

Other Thoughts: I couldn't be happier with the reliability this offers in Win7, I do a lot of recording and it works perfectly 99% of the time, which is above average for modern computer equipment.

1 out of 5 eggsAver what?

Pros: Works if you don't use Vanilla XP. Vista and Win7 media centers seem to handle this thing to a level of acceptance.

Cons: The person who designed the Aver Media Center should be shot before dawn! Click TV on the darned thing and it locks up the whole system. Even Task Manager can't kill it. And thats with the latest software and drivers from the Aver site as of 2 Feb. 2010.

Other Thoughts: This thing is worth about 25 bucks as is. If you pay more, the joke's on you. Now if they design an better hybrid media program for the device, then it may be worth the hard earned cash.

1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: does digital

Cons: Does not do analog

Other Thoughts: Needs to do both digital and analog

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

AVerTVHD Volar Max is a pure digital Tuner. If you are looking for a tuner to support both digital and analog I suggest AVerTV Hybrid Volar Max. http://www.avermedia-usa.com//AVerTV/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=431

4 out of 5 eggsIt worked...

Pros: Worked well with Win7, 64-bit. Didn't try the software provided, as I heard it was buggy. But Windows Media Center picked it up just fine

Cons: Labeling isn't all that clear. Yes, it states it only works with digital clearQAM and ATSC, but none of these products make it easy for you (ie... YES it will work with your cable subscription, or NO it will not work with your cable subscription). To make things easier for you... NO, this will NOT work with the set-top box provided by your cable provider, and therefore NO you will NOT be able to watch all the channels you subscribe to (because, apparently, all set-top boxes are analog outputs... maybe it's just me, but I had a tough time discovering that crucial bit of information)
