5 out of 5 eggsAVerMedia Volar Hybrid Q H837 USB 2.0 Interface

Pros: easy to set up-go to their website for newer driver and media player...follow on screen set up. at first I just installed driver and set up Windows media center and works fine with it...I used the antenna that came with product

Cons: Could use a higher quality antenna, but you can always purchase a stronger antenna.

Other Thoughts: I would use the software that came with the product, as Windows Media Center uses your zip code information to download the channels. Therefore, it publishes info on every station near you. Many stations that are published you cant pick up on the "Rabbit ear" antenna provided.

The AVerMedia software Scans and downloads the stations and guide of only the stations you can receive, so you only see only the stations you CAN actually pick up.

5 out of 5 eggsBest quality I have found

Pros: Crystal clear TV picture and recorded content equally as good. I have owned Avermedia tuners for 6 years now and all still working and performing as they did when they were new.

Cons: Media Center Software (see other thoughts) not worth removing a star however

Other Thoughts: When Avermedia first introduced a clear (QAM) digital video tuner card some 5 years ago I immediately bought one. I may very well be the first one to own one. That particular device was a PCI express card and it is still funcitoning very well. I currently have 2 Avermedia PCI Express tuner cards and this USB Volar Max for three computers. I have had them for years and all are still working so they have proven to be very reliable.

I live in a remote area and over the air broadcasts are out of the question. I rely on cable only. If you are not familiar with what Clear QAM is it is programming provided by cable companies that is UNENCRYPTED so that a cable box isn't needed. If your cable company encrypts or "scrambles" your signal, clear qam devices will not work.

The included Media Center Software leaves a lot to be desired but it does display live tv well and more importantly it records in MPEG format with a picture as clear as the orginal. I have tried Windows Media Center and was extremely disappointed. Picture wasn't nearly as good and you can not record in the native mpg format. Microsoft forces you into using their video format!

About the only live TV I ever watch is sporting events. Everything else I DVR and then use editing software to remove all commercials so when I sit down to watch something I get a crystal clear picture and don't have to worry about fast forwarding through commercials. Most editing software I had looked at in the past were a pain in the rear to work with and wanted to re-render the video. VideoReDo makes outstanding software that is intuitive and extremely easy to edit video and does not re-render leaving the original video in tact minus the parts that were edited out. (increases speed) It only takes me a couple minutes to edit a full one hour video using it.

Setting up the software and drivers can be a pain and the additional features of the included Media Center Software to me are useless. However I am very pleased with the product.and have enjoyed YEARS of crystal clear TV viewing and recorded video.

I have tried other brands and none have produced a better quality picture than Avermedia.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Good Product

Pros: Excellent reception; can do both frequency and channel scan in analog mode.

Cons: Very slow installation in Win7 64 bit; analog signal detection painfully slow. Software a bit awkward to use.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a very good product. Reception vastly superior to "EVGA in D tube" it replaced. High gain supplied antenna quite small but performs amazingly on both analog and digital signals. Suspect it has active components. Win7 64 bit installation was VERY slow. Software a bit awkward to use. Though analog channel scan painfully slow, it can scan in either frequency or channel mode which allows detection of home analog video transmitters.

1 out of 5 eggsDigital TV will not work for expert user!

Pros: Analog cable TV and analog FM works good with the latest Avermedia software using Windows XP Pro SP3.

Cons: No channels after autoscan for digital TV QAM from cable, ATSC from antenna, or ATSC digtal FM from antenna. Must be a bad unit that they shipped with a dead digital chip. The green light on the tuner does switch on meaning USB part is working. Modes are set correctly and good signal at input of tuner.

Other Thoughts: Know the correct modes were selected.

Tried it on two different Windows XP Pro SP3 computers to test if it was a bad frequency table. Analyzed Aver's sofware processes and did not spot a software cause of no digital channels.

Tried it with other TV software and again analog part worked but digital part did not.

As a skilled tech, conclusion is faulty circuit inside TV tuner, so will return it for exchange but worried it maybe a bad batch of units.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks well when it doesn't BSOD

Pros: Easy to setup, good picture quality, looked like it was going to be great.

Cons: BSOD with latest driver after less than ten minutes. BAD_POLL_CALLER.

Other Thoughts: If you don't get the BSOD, this looks like it'd be awesome. BSOD makes it useless though.

5 out of 5 eggsNext Generation Tuner

Pros: The vast majority of the Newegg customer reviews of USB connected tuner devices state that AVerMedia products deliver the highest quality picture and sound, and have the longest life span. The AVerMedia AVerTV Volar Hybrid Q appears to be the next generation of the Volar Hybrid Max, which would make it AVerMedia's current top of the line model for USB connected tuners.

(The 5 eggs are for "best in class.")

Cons: There are very few A/V players that recognize AVerMedia USB tuners. Of the five players mentioned by AVerMedia that work with the older Volar Max, Windows Media Center dummies down all recordings of HD programs to 704x480 SD, AVer MediaCenter 3D freezes up a little after 20 minutes into any recording (caused by two threads in an infinite wait state), Sage TV was assimilated by Google and no longer is available, Cyberlink PowerCinema cannot see the Volar Q, which leaves only the $99 Beyond TV. Beyond TV definitely is not my first choice for an A/V player, however, for anyone who wants to record HD channels in HD, Beyond TV is the only choice.

Other Thoughts: Attaching the tuner to a cable outlet or antenna using RG6 or even RG58 cable puts too much stress on the PC's USB port when the tuner is plugged directly into the port. Newegg has a nice 6" USB extension cable available. Buy it and use it. The Volar Q does not include the AV Input Dongle, and it does not have enough demand to justify Newegg carrying it. You can buy one directly from AVerMedia (details are on the back of the Volar Q box).

FM tuner - excellent selectivity, average sensitivity. Output: 16-bit 44.1 Khz PCM.

Analog tuner - good results. Output: 7000 kbps VBR MPEG-2 digital video; 224 kbps 48.0 Khz CBR MPEG-1 layer-2 digital audio.

AV input (S-Video or composite, stereo) - good results. Ouput: 9000 kbps CBR MPEG-2 digital video; 224 kbps 48.0 Khz CBR MPEG-1 layer-2 digital audio.

Digital tuner - excellent results.

A single Volar Q tuner CAN receive all of a major channel's subchannels at once, but Beyond TV can only record 1 subchannel at a time.

5 out of 5 eggsNot a bad little tuner

Pros: Compact little tuner with a strong antenna.Bought this thing to watch TV at work when it gets slow and has been great thus far. For it's size it gets great reception. Even better than a coworkers full size HD antenna.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that I didnt buy this thing sooner !

Other Thoughts: For the price its hard to go wrong. I've had very good luck with AVerMedia. Id like to pick up one of the same antenna's for my AVerMedia card in my home PC.

3 out of 5 eggsNot dual tuner !

Pros: Card Seems to work well with windows 7 media center. It seems to replace costly dvr, time shift, record. But I've only had it for a week ,and I never had a tv tuner before to compare it to. HD picture looks pretty good. And I've only used the digital QAM.

Cons: But Here's the bad part and a big one I bought this card because it is advertized to Watch & Record Two Channels at The Same Time. You cannot!

I contacted AverMedia CS and this was there response.

Manufacturer Response:
Thank you for choosing AVerMedia.

Dear Customer!

As confirmed with our Product Management, AverTV Hybrid Volar Q (H837) doesn't have dual tuner function.
However if you install two Avermedia tuners on your computer you will be able to watch&record two channels at the same time. Please note that if you install two tuners under Avermedia Center, in case of watching/recording HD channels the picture quality may get distorted.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us!
Best regards
Avermedia CS

Other Thoughts: If I knew you could not watch&record two channels at the same time I probably would have bought a less expensive card. And I think the wording on Newegg and Avermedia website is misleading /incorrect, and needs to be changed. But I've bought other things from Newegg that work very well.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

AVerTV Volar Q does not have dual tuner support. For dual Tuner support you will need to have two tuners installed.

Multiple-card Support
When there is more than one AVerMedia TV tuner card or capture card in your system, AVer MediaCenter 3D can present the images from different devices in the same window at the same time.

Please contact Technical Support if you have any questions.
