1 out of 5 eggsWorks well when it doesn't BSOD

Pros: Easy to setup, good picture quality, looked like it was going to be great.

Cons: BSOD with latest driver after less than ten minutes. BAD_POLL_CALLER.

Other Thoughts: If you don't get the BSOD, this looks like it'd be awesome. BSOD makes it useless though.

5 out of 5 eggsNext Generation Tuner

Pros: The vast majority of the Newegg customer reviews of USB connected tuner devices state that AVerMedia products deliver the highest quality picture and sound, and have the longest life span. The AVerMedia AVerTV Volar Hybrid Q appears to be the next generation of the Volar Hybrid Max, which would make it AVerMedia's current top of the line model for USB connected tuners.

(The 5 eggs are for "best in class.")

Cons: There are very few A/V players that recognize AVerMedia USB tuners. Of the five players mentioned by AVerMedia that work with the older Volar Max, Windows Media Center dummies down all recordings of HD programs to 704x480 SD, AVer MediaCenter 3D freezes up a little after 20 minutes into any recording (caused by two threads in an infinite wait state), Sage TV was assimilated by Google and no longer is available, Cyberlink PowerCinema cannot see the Volar Q, which leaves only the $99 Beyond TV. Beyond TV definitely is not my first choice for an A/V player, however, for anyone who wants to record HD channels in HD, Beyond TV is the only choice.

Other Thoughts: Attaching the tuner to a cable outlet or antenna using RG6 or even RG58 cable puts too much stress on the PC's USB port when the tuner is plugged directly into the port. Newegg has a nice 6" USB extension cable available. Buy it and use it. The Volar Q does not include the AV Input Dongle, and it does not have enough demand to justify Newegg carrying it. You can buy one directly from AVerMedia (details are on the back of the Volar Q box).

FM tuner - excellent selectivity, average sensitivity. Output: 16-bit 44.1 Khz PCM.

Analog tuner - good results. Output: 7000 kbps VBR MPEG-2 digital video; 224 kbps 48.0 Khz CBR MPEG-1 layer-2 digital audio.

AV input (S-Video or composite, stereo) - good results. Ouput: 9000 kbps CBR MPEG-2 digital video; 224 kbps 48.0 Khz CBR MPEG-1 layer-2 digital audio.

Digital tuner - excellent results.

A single Volar Q tuner CAN receive all of a major channel's subchannels at once, but Beyond TV can only record 1 subchannel at a time.

5 out of 5 eggsNot a bad little tuner

Pros: Compact little tuner with a strong antenna.Bought this thing to watch TV at work when it gets slow and has been great thus far. For it's size it gets great reception. Even better than a coworkers full size HD antenna.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that I didnt buy this thing sooner !

Other Thoughts: For the price its hard to go wrong. I've had very good luck with AVerMedia. Id like to pick up one of the same antenna's for my AVerMedia card in my home PC.

3 out of 5 eggsNot dual tuner !

Pros: Card Seems to work well with windows 7 media center. It seems to replace costly dvr, time shift, record. But I've only had it for a week ,and I never had a tv tuner before to compare it to. HD picture looks pretty good. And I've only used the digital QAM.

Cons: But Here's the bad part and a big one I bought this card because it is advertized to Watch & Record Two Channels at The Same Time. You cannot!

I contacted AverMedia CS and this was there response.

Manufacturer Response:
Thank you for choosing AVerMedia.

Dear Customer!

As confirmed with our Product Management, AverTV Hybrid Volar Q (H837) doesn't have dual tuner function.
However if you install two Avermedia tuners on your computer you will be able to watch&record two channels at the same time. Please note that if you install two tuners under Avermedia Center, in case of watching/recording HD channels the picture quality may get distorted.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us!
Best regards
Avermedia CS

Other Thoughts: If I knew you could not watch&record two channels at the same time I probably would have bought a less expensive card. And I think the wording on Newegg and Avermedia website is misleading /incorrect, and needs to be changed. But I've bought other things from Newegg that work very well.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

AVerTV Volar Q does not have dual tuner support. For dual Tuner support you will need to have two tuners installed.

Multiple-card Support
When there is more than one AVerMedia TV tuner card or capture card in your system, AVer MediaCenter 3D can present the images from different devices in the same window at the same time.

Please contact Technical Support if you have any questions.
