1 out of 5 eggsDoes not record !

Pros: None

Cons: Got this device to record off from my set top box and console. Everytime i get an error macrovision found and it does not record at all. Pass through works fine but does not record - Waste of money. Contacted avermedia and even got a replacement and same issue with the new device. Now they say it cannot record from copy protected sources - fair enough - i then contacted my set top box and cable company they said i can record from the set top box as long as it is for personal use and i m not distributing the content but avermedia will not listen to this. This device is of no use if you want to record your tv shows. They even have ezrecorder plus which will supposedly record and schedule tv recordings but mind you again it will have the same copy protection issue - Buy the hauppauge hd pvr instead its value for money!
Avermedia does not understand different countries have different laws and in my country it is fine to record for personal use . they are not offering a way to turn off macrovision check or record with macrovision - Very disappointed with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsGoof for the money you get

Pros: No computer needed, easy to handle menu, and pretty good quality for what you get.

Cons: The fact this is a bit of a step down from any other pvr you see today, it's quality is degraded compared to without it being plugged in to the pvr. It records in a weird type of .AVI file, so you need to download a mp4 converter from AverMedia themselves in order to edit the clips.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: While I do use this to record at home, the main reason I decided to buy it was because I play a lot of games at a friends house and I wanted a portable option for capture. If you use a 2.5" internal hdd, it doesn't get much more portable than that. The fact that you can also use a thumb drive (I formatted mine to NTFS and it worked just fine) and an external hdd are nice as well.

In addition, the recent firmware updates allow you to record in 1080p and it now saves in .mp4 as well.

Pass-through works even when the device is off, and during gameplay I haven't noticed any lag whatsoever.

Overall I've had nothing but a great experience with this and I would definitely buy it again.

Cons: -If you use an internal hard drive with this, it can get pretty hot in there.
-There's a few second delay upon hitting record.

Other Thoughts: Purchased from another website.

2 out of 5 eggsSomething's wrong

Pros: Firmware updates allows 1080p recording.

Cons: Doesn't work with any USB 2.0 Drive I had
Starting displays green and purple horizontal lines on passthrough output along with a buzzing sound. I've tried talking to AverMedia (who kept insisting I didn't know how to plug in cables correctly...) and they said talk to NewEgg. NewEgg hasn't said anything for a month....

3 out of 5 eggsVery Picky...

Pros: -Many Features
-Not very big
-comes with remote (w/ batteries)
-comes with 2 component cables
-does not need computer!

Cons: -can only record to certain drives
-only records in 1080i intead of 1080p
-looks kind of ugly :P
-Very laggy, takes about 4 seconds after you hit record to start recording and pop up the recording screen

Other Thoughts: Story Time! I bought this item in July 2012. They shipped it quick, no packaging problems, etc., but there was one thing wrong... It would not work with any of my flash drives, External HDDs or 3.5" SATA HDDs. I then proceded to buy 2 16gb Kingston DataTraveler 100 G2's which set me back about another 50 bucks... To be honest if you do have a computer that you can bring around I would buy the Hauppauge because of the quality and the "laggyness" of this item.

4 out of 5 eggsgood shhh

Pros: Easy. Easy..easy. it has great quality in videos. I hardly notice a difference from recorded video just alittle color hit but minimum. I have it hooked up via usb to a hard drive dock and works no problems. It records anything going threw my PlayStation Netflix and all. Dvd blueray. Anything... and the avi to mp4 converter for free.. sweet and even that simple

Cons: Component cables suck its junk don't use. use your own u must update firmware immediately. It will work but not for everything until you get 1.7 update. then it will record anything

5 out of 5 eggsAddition to previous review

Pros: see previous review "Great Capture Device"

Cons: see previous review "Great Capture Device"

Other Thoughts: I wasn't paying attention so I don't recall if I did or didn't mention this, but what I meant to say was, you CAN record an Xbox Live party, but you'll hear everyone else and not yourself. All you have to do is choose "Play through both" in preferences under the sound menu (where to choose to either play through speakers or headset). I remedied this by just using a headset connected to my laptop and Audacity to record myself in .wav format...doesn't take long to merge the two files together in a video editor.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Capture Device

Pros: No PC needed
Records in HD (720p)
Very simple to set up (even the instructions are simple)
No lag in HD recording
No pixelation in recorded video
GREAT quality in high FPS (frames per second, not "first person shooter) games like Modern Warfare 3
Records immediately upon pressing button
Allows you to review recorded video right from your TV
All of my external drives are compatible
No unnecessary cables all over the room
Portable enough to fit almost anywhere
Cheaper price than the Hauppauge HD PVR

Cons: Does not record input from Xbox Live party (not enough to deduct an egg unless you're just extremely picky and completely full of yourself)

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to replace my Hava PVR instead of going with the popular Hauppauge PVR & I'm glad I did. The only real con to me is not being able to record myself interacting with friends in an Xbox Live party, but only a few PVRs on the market have that capability & the prices are ridiculous.

I chose this over the Hauppauge primarily for the price...and after borrowing a friend's Hauppauge to compare, the AverMedia definitely is just as high quality. I literally use it almost everyday to post videos to YouTube under our gaming channel, and have had no qualms so far. BUY THIS DEVICE. You'll be happy you did. I'm really not sure how anyone is having issues setting it up...I purchased one for my 8 year old cousin and he could do it without instructions.
