could i use this to record my XBox 360 on my laptop? i want to start doing some console Let's Play's and I'm not entirely sure with hardware as i am with software.

Page 2 of the Product manual shows that it works with Xbox/Gaming Systems. Since I cannot load links onto this answer, to find the manual you go to "Kworld" and input your product, VS-USB2800D on the product page, under the "download" tab, the product manual is listed. I saw a lot of negative reviews, on multiple sites, however it worked out for our needs just fine - the only concern was that it doesn't work on Windows Vista, or WIN7 (that might make a difference if your laptop is loaded with that OS).

We used it for capturing Robot video feed and it worked out - that was with Windows XP.

will it make it possible to download a vcr tape onto my computer.?

Yes, that is what I used it for.  Worked great, but beware.  As important as the hardware is, you also need software to copy the VCR tapes and what comes with this did not work for me.  I ended up using a free program called Open broadcaster which after some tweaking got the job done.  It was confusing at first, but once you figure it out it works well.

Do I have to use a TV with an AV OUT, or can I just split the signal?

I'm not sure if I fully understand the question, but I'll give it a shot.

If you have a device that gives you an RCA signal, this will convert it for use in your computer.  If you are looking to display on two devices (a tv and the computer for instance), you will need to either have a tv which rebroadcasts (I didn't know those existed) or you will have to split the signal.  Otherwise, you can go directly into this device.

I don't believe I ever used it with Windows 8.1 and the web site support is very lacking in that area. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

Question 6

Is there a way to use this device with software other than the bundled software?  The device doesn't turn on, and when I try to use it in other programs (Camtasia Studio, OBS), it doesn't have a signal and says the device is in use by something else.  I installed the drivers and I'm having difficulty searching for a solution.

I ran in to the same situation.  The only software which would access the device was the Cyberlink Director.  I ended up having to go with Dazzle by Pinnacle because all the home movies I was trying to transfer kept showing a CopyRight Protected notice on KWorld, but they were home VHS of my kids bday so no reason for it.

I'm not familiar with a vdo output, but this unit will take either Composite or S-video inputs. To display the video from your Karaoke machine on your laptop you'll need software with a streaming display feature. Based on other reviews I used the Debut capture software instead of the bundled stuff that came with it. The preview window that Debut uses is small and is barely watchable and is probably not to useful for your application. Since I'm more interested in the final product, video files captured from VHS tapes to convert to DVD. which was good enough considering the source. You might want to try VLC player to stream the video.

Is this compatible to MAC?

I don't know. It comes with one installation disk, made for Windows.
You might try asking about it on an Ubuntu forum site; there may be an open source program you could download to run it. The device itself is just a capture source, or input ; so whatever program you have on your MAC might recognize the device if you simply connect it.

This came in a package with no manual or instructions for obtaining drivers.  I have all the proper connections but my computer does not recognize the interface. How do I get it to work???
