1 out of 5 eggsAffirmative. Worthless piece of junk

Pros: None

Cons: My project was to convert old VHS home videos of the family. The unit worked ok to do Video but was not great. For audio it was horrible. I even tried to just use my laptop for the audio input and the software will not let you use anything but this Interface.

Other Thoughts: So what do you do when something does not work. Go to the support website right? Well try and find a website for this product before you buy it. GOOD LUCK!

Take all the bad reviews as your warning.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Great for converting those old VHS tapes or Camcorder tapes to digital or DVD.

Cons: Bundled software is extremely outdated and weak.

Other Thoughts: The adapter itself has been working great for me. The software leaves something to be desired. The bundled software that came with the adapter (Cyberlink Powerdirector 10) is vastly outdated, current version is Powerdirector 12. I am currently looking around for a better program to use as this one is causing a lot of dropped frames. While I cannot completely rule out the adapter as the cause, various troubleshooting guides suggest it is software related or hardware related. Well, I far exceed their recommended specs, so I am going with software. Overall, for the price, I cannot complain too much. Pretty much the same package at Best Buy cost double when I looked there. If I can get the software situation figured out so I don't have dropped frames, then I'll be golden. I will update my review if needed later on.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless piece of junk

Pros: Absolutely NOTHING

Cons: The fact that this thing doesn't work with ANY video capture software is one major con.
And what's with the button on the unit just stuck on there arbitrarily?

Other Thoughts: Avoid this thing like the plague

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product, Great Price

Pros: Cheap
All Software needed is Included
Works Well

Cons: Sometimes Recording Stops if it thinks there is protected content

Other Thoughts: For the price of this little device it's perfect. If you want to record standard definition video to your hard drive then this is a great entry level device. I used this to transfer home movies from VHS to HDD and ultimately to DVD. Obviously VHS needs to be recorded in real-time unlike a digital media that could copy in a fraction of the time it would take to watch the video. Saying that I easily put 36+ hours of use on this device in under a week and it held up perfectly, even recording up to 5 hours in 1 sitting.
The only downside I can think of this device (more the software) is that occasionally it would stop recording what it deemed to be "protected content" this occured only a handful of times when the VHS cassette went under auto-tracking. The feature could also be considered helpful though since there were a couple tapes where we had recorded home videos over recorded TV shows, the device would stop recording at the end of the home movies when the recorded TV show started playing again.

All software needed is included with this device. I used my own DVD making software but this product did include it.

1 out of 5 eggsDied for no reason

Pros: Worked for 5 VHS tapes.

Cons: Used it 5 times and it worked fine. Unplugged it and didn't use it for about a year, plugged it in to convert a VHS to DVD...it's dead! Nice...

Other Thoughts: Going to try a different brand. How does an electronic device die sitting in a desk drawer unplugged?

1 out of 5 eggsDoes Not Work.....

Pros: No

Cons: I Have tried 2 units on 3 PC both Win7 and XP with 3 analog sources, Hi8 camcorder, VCR and TV with composite output. After downloading and installing driver PC sees the unit as USB multimedia device and source for digital streaming. You can start /stop streaming by pressing button but no digital output. Led on the unit never goes on. Obviously DVD Maker does not convert analog into digital

Other Thoughts: My old, from 2006, cheap Chinese DVD recorder delivers poor quality DVD from my Hi8 camcorder, has problems with recording and finalizing DVD blanks, has obvious limits on recording time. So I decided to by a converter directly into common video files. Terribly wrong. Do not gamble.

2 out of 5 eggsGood and Bad

Pros: The USB to RCA and S-Video device works like any other.

Cons: The software that comes with it is worthless.
Home movies say copyright protected.
I installed Roxio Creator NXT 2 and everything was great.

Other Thoughts: Honestly all the USB to RCA devices work the same. It all comes down to software and this frankly sucks.
Figure better software into the cost and makeup your own mind if this is worth it.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid device. No comment on bundled software

Pros: - Simple to use. Just plug in the corresponding audio and video cables into the device, then plug the device into your usb/mic ports, install drivers and the device is ready to use.

- Video quality is acceptable over composite video input (still need to try s-video, but it probably won't be much better)***

- Sound quality is good, just a little loud.

Note: The quality of the image you get heavily depends on your capture software. More on that in the other thoughts section.

Cons: - The "bundle" is worthless to me. I wish you could just buy the device at a lower price w/o the software. Also, I didn't use the driver disk. That's no problem because the drivers on KWorld's site are up to date and work fine.

Other Thoughts: I tested the device with three different free capture programs.

1. Open Broadcaster Software - This software is designed for streaming live videos (think Dota II and Star Craft) but it has a consistent interface for capturing from any source (Screen, Capture Device, Camera, etc). It has excellent quality control over the final video as well, so I reccommend using this with the device. Just be sure to read a tutorial on how to set up everything.

2. VLC Player - I actually tried this first and it was plug and play. Just tell it to open the capture device and select "direct show" and "play" (all the defaults should be ok) and you will be able to view video from the device. I stopped here, however b/c video quality wasn't good.

3. Media Player Home Classic - This also should be able to use this device but I was only able to get sound and no video when I attempted to use it.

So, as other reviewers have said, your mileage may vary depending on which software package you use with this device.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: It works with Win7 x64.
Composite and S-video.
The separate USB and 3.5mm audio cables are each about 4.5 feet in length.

Cons: The CPU requirement on the box was higher than what's on the specs page. * See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I downloaded the driver from kworld, plugged in the device, and directed windows to use the extracted files. The extra software on the disk could be good. I didn't use it.

I'm using this to watch tapes, laser dics, play console games, etc. It does well on a 1.5GHz A6 laptop. I can capture in uncompressed without torturing the CPU (uses a lot of HD space though). Encoding on the fly... 1.5GHz does not cut it. No problem, as it's under the CPU spec anyway.

The audio was noisy at first. It is not caused by the built in audio hook-ups on the device. I tried a separate cable and got the same. It turns out in my case, the microphone/line in levels in Windows are too high. I turned it down to zero (but not muted), and have clear sound. You can get to the setting with:

Right-click speaker --> Recording devices --> microphone or line in --> properties --> levels

* CPU req's: Someone feel free to correct me, but I recall the box (that I threw away) said you need a 2GHz CPU. That would be a good starting point, if you're going to use this to record stuff.
