5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Works as advertised so far and I have really been putting it through the passes. I own a Hauppauge 512 which is an excellent unit and there are pro's and con's between the two units. This unit works so smooth. Easy to use and the record quality is excellent. With both units there is the HDCP issue which is not either units fault. It is an industry standard to 'protect video.' So the HDCP is a disappointment on both units, but again, you don't knock down eggs for something they have no control over. Buy an illegal stripper if that is an issue. With the Hauppauge the software was better for setting controlled recording times as I bought the Avermedia Game Capture to use as a DVR essentially. I could give a flip about capturing games. It works perfect with my cable box and I bought it because it has the Component cables that allow me to record from the cable box. I would LOVE to record using the HDMI but the HDCP encryption prohibits that on EITHER UNIT. But I LOVE not having to use a computer to record. Just set it up went through some settings, updated the firmware that has timer recording now and it works so easy and perfect so far...

Cons: Other then I wish I could get around the bloody HDCP I have ZERO complaints. IF something goes wrong with the unit then I will add a new review.

1 out of 5 eggsBad experience

Pros: None

Cons: Paid extra for internal hard drive and is no way to access that from the LAN port.
I could not transfer my personal video from Bluray or DVD over HDMI port (the unit does not record HDCP). Some video recorded is not in sync with audio.
Very bad technical support.

3 out of 5 eggsNot a true plug and play

Pros: Small console. Doesn't take up much space. Has a remote, set up is easy and the menu is easy to navigate. Easy to edit and review. Records in 1080p.

Cons: This was purchased for my son to easily record and upload his games onto YouTube. I thought it was a great price until I realized all the little extras involved. An external hard drive is needed to do any type of recording. You would need a large drive, at least a terabyte...$$ A VERY large capacity thumb drive might work, our 32GB was not large enough and you will need to format it. Save the headache and get an external drive. You can only access the internet via ethernet cable unless you buy a wifi adapter...$$ If you want to record any type of game that is HDCP then you will need to get a splitter...$$

Think about what you want to use this for and how much your are willing to spend and how much effort you want to put into all of this. If you already have these items then great, you are good to go. We went well over what I wanted to spend. We received our splitter today and the recording and editing was easy...now to upload...we will see...

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic capture device

Pros: High quality video, HDMI and component capture, ability to edit and upload to YouTube, record commentary and video at the same time

Cons: Internal editing software is EXTREMELY limited, but it's good for people just starting off who don't want to deal with editing software. Would have liked to have s-video capture as well, but it's not a big deal at all. Would have also liked the ability to record gameplay and commentary as separate files

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a GREAT capture device that most definitely gets the job done. I've used AverMedia in the past and this not only meets but exceeds my expectations of their products. The gripes listed above are only minor. If you need a good quality capture device that won't go out on you, definitely pick this one up.

5 out of 5 eggsMy Son Loves It!

Pros: Records 480p, 720p, and 1080p video which my son loves. We had to buy a composite cable for the Wii but it works great for recording gaming or TV in HD for non-encrypted HDMI devices. I looked at several different brands before settling on this one. This one for the options you get is definitely worth the price when I paid it over the competitions.

Cons: FYI: Recorded commentary isn't the clearest but that may be due to the cheap headset we purchased. Because the commentary was clear enough, I didn't purchase another headset to test which was the real issue so it is hard to say it is a con or not for this device hence me posting it as FYI.

Other Thoughts: So far so good! My son has recorderd around 34 hours of game recording so far and it has been working great!

1 out of 5 eggsBroken HDCP implementation with less than optimal resolution

Pros: records some types of video at less than optimal resolutions without problems

Cons: There are a few complains that I have with this device.

1) the user interface is garbage. I acknowledge that it needs to be simple enough for weak-minded xbox gamers to use, but they really did haul in the bottom of the barrel for their UI design on this one.

2) game capture devices implement copyright protection known as HDCP. This is to be expected. Without much difficulty, however, (and quite accidentally) I was able to find a bug in the implementation of the Game Capture II to think that I was streaming HDCP protected media when I really wasn't. It appears that it caches the HDCP flag, and doesn't reset it unless you disconnect the device and reconnect it. The end result is that I cannot record stuff that's not HDCP protected that I intended to. Quite disappointing.

3) While avermedia says that it supports 1080p, in truth, it messes with the signal so that even if you have 3 IDENTICAL output monitors, you cannot use features like nVidia surround, (something to do with the difference between 1920x1080 current vs 1920x1080 native). My conclusion is that the Game Capture HD II has limited monitor support. Now you're instinctive reaction might be "Why would I try to record video from nvidia surround", right? Well, you wouldn't. But you cannot even connect the device to such a monitor; So if you occasionally bounce between nVidia Surround and normal SLI modes, this device will prevent you from doing so unless you want to rewire your setup every time.

Other Thoughts: If all you intend to do with this device is record games from an xbox or other console, it might be your solution. By the way of contrast, if you're a PC gamer, or have other recording needs, stay away from this device.

4 out of 5 eggsResponse to N/A re: wired connection to router

Pros: It doesn't have to be wired close to your router. You can get a ethernet WiFi adaptor to connect it. I used a Netgear WNCE2001 WiFi adaptor for it & it works just fine. Been uploading Youtube videos wirelessly without any problems at all.

Cons: Can't be left ON at all times. The power botton light keeps blinking if the device is ON & the console is OFF. It also takes time for for the device to turn ON/OFF. Hopefully this can be fixed with a firmware update. The internal storage can get hot (if you're using a HDD or in my case a Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB hybrid SSD). Using a non-mechanical storage drive such as a true SSD should be fine. The lack of live streaming feature is a minus. I'm hoping hence this device has an internet connection that future firmware updates will allow it to be able to do live streaming via Youtube Live or TwitchTV.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat for beginners but pass if you're trying to upgrade

Pros: Easy to use. Good for those who don't have computer nearby.

Cons: No livestreaming. Requires router connection that must go through LAN (no wifi). Recorded colors are dark so it needs color correction for best picture.

Other Thoughts: I am the owner of the game capture 1 and decided I'd upgrade. However, the differences are so small that I'm sending this one back in hopes that the next iteration is better. This device can edit and upload without a computer but requires it to be hooked up to a router via wire. If you're not near your router than all these features are gone and you're left with a slightly faster than gen 1 device whose only upgrade in 1080p. Even with an Internet connection it cannot livestream which is a huge letdown. I will say that it is a good card if you're new to recording gameplays as it is easy to record (to an external hard drive sold separately) but if you're looking for an upgrade I'd suggest looking elsewhere. I gave it a 2 for my personal experience but if you're new and just want a capture card that runs 1080p with a small file size then I would suggest this as a startup.
