5 out of 5 eggsGreat item - They still sell it!

Pros: Bought this for my moms PC, she needs tons of USB connections, has USB keys for her embroidery software and it has worked great!

Also needed firewire for her camcorder.

Cons: None, owned this unit since 04 and it still functions fine!

Other Thoughts: Just make sure you have the jumpers for the unit on the mobo its going on, other then that, it does its job.

1 out of 5 eggsFunctional- yes, but I'd never buy this again

Pros: It works...

Cons: The connections on this are all proprietary - including the screws! I can't even imagine that today, when Firewire and USB connectors are standardized, someone would put plugs on this unit like this. On the device, the Firewire connector is a single row plug - not the dual row plug with the open pin to help you get the orientation correct - and then you connect the 6 individual black connectors to the motherboard. For USB, you have 10 individual connectors to put on the motherboard. Have you ever tried that???? It's totally insane and takes about 10 minutes!! Oh, and if you do it wrong, you can short out your USB devices, or maybe shock your motherboard to death. Even the screws are proprietary... I lost mine (temporarily thank goodness) and thought I'd just get some out of my spare parts bin, but they didn't fit. The original screws are more like self tapping wood screws with a coarse thread. The "standard" motherboard screws cannot be used. What a waste!

Other Thoughts: Unless you have a motherboard with USB and Firewire connectors that are NOT the standards configuration, and you NEED the individual connectors to tap into the motherboard - you'd be fairly crazy to buy this...

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Made of thick, sturdy plastic. Looks and works great!

Cons: It would have been nice to clarify the pinouts. They use different wire labeling than motherboards specify. A little know how is recommended.

Other Thoughts: It would have been better if they included 2 blank 10pin plugs for wiring to motherboards. Even needing the user to wire it themselves. Having 6 individual headers for firewire and 9 for usb makes it a real pain to install.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't Work

Pros: None

Cons: First, the cable that you connect to the mother board from the unit was split into separate connectors. A diagram did come with the unit so I guess that’s worth the one egg.
The second thing it worked one time and quit.

Other Thoughts: Well that’s what I get for being cheap.
All my fault….

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but is tall for 3.5 bay

Pros: It gave me 2 USB ports on the front of my old case.

Cons: If you have no extra room above your 3.5 bay you may have a problem using it. The way the wires connect to it I did not have enough height for it to fit in my 3.5 bay. I made a sheet metal bracket to hold it in a 5.25 bay and cut out the plastic cover that was over the empty 5.25 bay to fit it. Took some time but it worked. If their wires would have come straight out the back it would have saved me a lot of time.

Individual wires are a pain to connect to the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Some of the wires were labeled differently then what my motherboard. Koutech customer service was quick to respond to my email with the correct way to connect the plugs.

I don't have any firewire devices so I don't know if it works.

5 out of 5 eggsNice design...ugly

Pros: INice Desgn...What I needed.
I new what I was getting into when I bought this. I am building costomer order and the atx case a Real Nice Red. Well I got some red auto dashboard 3m paint put some extra time to get it to match. Costomer Happy.

Cons: Not really a con and not worthy of deducting a egg but it would save me a lot of time if I could get some of these panel parts in something other than ugly black. Not my color and I am tired of trying to make costomers happy with two tone or mix match.

Other Thoughts: Always great service from New Egg.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Fits in my unused 3.5" floppy opening, comes with all the screws needed, lots of extra long cables to connect on my case (full tower, and they reach all the way to the bottom), sticker label to block unused firewire to prevent dust accumulation was a nice touch

Cons: Single-pin connectors are a drag, but it only took an extra 5 minutes to use the single-pins on the module and use the block connectors for the mobo. Just reverse engineer the layout (take a pen and paper, diagram where the wires are on the block connectors, and then connect the single pin connectors accordingly)

Other Thoughts: Nice connector, does what it's supposed to....lots of cable length. Would be nice to have an LED activity light on the front, but not a big deal.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: cheap
moves ports to the front via mobo plugs instead of back panel

Cons: the cable to connect the reader to the board is screwy. instead of it using a solid plug on both ends, it has one solid then a bunch on single pin plugs, which are a pain to plug in, and you can't just reverse the cable because the solid end doesn't match the arrangment on the mobo

4 out of 5 eggsCheap, but a pain to install

Pros: Low low price!
Performs as advertised and includes everything you need.

Cons: Single pins are a real pain to install.

Other Thoughts: I didn't see any pins mis-labeled, but I only read the pin labels, not the booklet. I double checked the polarity and voltage with a multi-meter after installation.

Here's the order for my MSI AM2 motherboard
black-brown
grey-green
yellow-white
orange-red

There are two black wires, the thicker one was not used.

4 out of 5 eggsWell made but wires are labeled wrong

Pros: Light, but good thick plastic.Nice clean design.Solder joints are nice and clean.

Cons: The problem with it is.Its wire label tabs are abbreviated different than my Asus Mobo. Also one of the wires is labeled as a -negative when it is actually a +positive.

Other Thoughts: I may MOD it cause I will never use Firewire anyway. It would have been nice if they would have put a standard end on it that way you do not burn anything up due to the weird wiring.
