Hauppauge turns your PC into an HDTV with their WinTV-HVR-1600. This PCI card has two tuners: NTSC, and ATSC/ClearQAM. The NTSC tuner is a 125 channel cable ready tuner for all of your standard over the air broadcasts or regular cable TV. The ATSC/Clear QAM tuner supports all 18 ATSC formats including 1080i. You can watch the programming live or record it to disk as an MPEG-2 program stream.

There is also an S-Video input with stereo audio inputs so you can attach a VCR to copy your old tapes onto DVD. An S-Video to composite adapter makes it possible to use a wider range of machines with the card.

The included Hauppauge WinTV2000 application lets you toggle between tuners so it is easy to watch what you want. Or, Windows Vista Media center will let you use the card as one of its tuners for seamless Vista integration. To make it easier to use there is a non MCE remote control that has been included along with an IR blaster to change the channel on you satellite or cable set top box.

Cons: none found.
Other Thoughts: My setup: Vista MCE on HDTV. Onboard video, tried this both OTA and through Cable Box. Excellent. Did *Not* need their CD for drivers. Vista/Windows Update found it and installed, no problem. Records HD.

Hardware good, software bad

Pros: Tuners can be used simultaneously.
Hardware MPEG-2 compression for analog tuner.
Decent picture quality.
Can tune clear QAM channels.
Cons: Factory software is weak.
No option to use single cable connection for both tuners.
Digital tuner is kind of sensitive.
Other Thoughts: I've had the card running under SageTV for about a year now with no problems. Originally with cable and OTA digital. Worked perfect in SageTV but the digital tuner was picky about signal quality compared to my TV.
When the new drivers came out I went to QAM for the digital input which works well.

The hardware is decent, I'm eventually going to add a second one, but the factory software is really only useful for watching TV on your computer and testing the card.

Get some decent PVR software and this card is a great addition.

Pros: works fine with over the air or free stations
Cons: DOESN'T WORK WITH A WIRED CONNECTION!!!!!!!!!! I tried searching for channels with the software that came with it and also with Windows Media Center. It didn't pick up a single channel on either one!

Pros: easy to install in windows and ubuntu.
remote control works in ubuntu
works good with mythtv
Cons: horrible picture quality over analog cable. i can switch back and forth from the TV to the PC and the picture quality doesn't even compare. colors are distorted, there are lines of distortion through the image, and the image is fuzzy in general, but the cable signal, when viewed on my tv, is just fine.
Other Thoughts: watching tv is tolerable, but recording tv is useless because of the poor quality. i will be looking for a different tuner card.
