For years Hauppauge has been making high quality add-ons to make your computer entertainment experience better. They've done it again with their HD PVR. This compact unit connects to your PC through a USB 2.0 interface for high speed data transfers. The back panel has Component Video, RCA audio and optical audio inputs with loop through outputs for each.
The loop-throughs let you put the PVR in-line with your cable/satellite box or other video source and your TV. Front panel connections let you add additional input sources like a game console. An IR blaster will send a signal to the video source to change to the appropriate channel to record your program.
The included suite of Arcsoft software lets take full advantage of the PVR's capabilities. TotalMediaExtreme handles the capture, edit and playback functions. MediaConverter lets you save the file in a different format including the Blu-ray compatible AVCHD. Watch what you want, when you want to with Hauppauge.
Pros: I have been working on some scientific applications for HD video. This is the ONLY device which offers a smooth path from HD video to a Blu-Ray compatible disk.
AVCHD codec allows recording of 1.5 hours of HD, at the highest bit rate, on a regular dual layer DVD. My disks will play in all the Blu-Ray machines at Best Buy!
The other alternatives for recording are very expensive and tempremental RAID based recording systems using a $1000 HD encoder.
The most important advantage may be that the HD PVR records directly to a Blu-Ray compatible format (H264/MPEG4 TS). This converts to Blu-Ray in a few minutes --- NO TRANSCODING!
For those of you not familiar with Transcoding, this is the process required to convert video from one CODEC to another. It is almost always required to convert to a Blu-ray compatible CODEC (AVCHD). When done in software, the transcoding process typically requires 2x - 5x the actual recording time (i.e. 2-5 hours to transcode 1 hr of video)
Cons: The software application includes a very simple file editor which allows you to exclude parts of a file from you AVCHD "burn".
If you use the editor, the software recodes the video and the time required to make a disk increases by a factor of 3x.

Tricky, but worth the hassle!

Pros: Wow, there are many positives, but the main one is being able to CAPTURE HiDef shows from my Comcast PVR, and then turn around and have the included Arcsoft software burn a COMPLETELY compatible BlueRay DVD is awsume. I can use a standard 10 cent DVDr and burn a one hour show on close to max quality. a Two hour show can be captured on a Dual Layer disc if needed (or you can drop capture quality).
This unit is great, although not for those shy of reading directions and fiddling QUITE a bit. It took me MANY hours of experimenting to figure out the stuff I needed to know. I still don't know things and there is NO (ziltch) instructions ANYWHERE from Arcsoft on how to best use the capture software settings.
Bottom line, there is just about NO other option for capturing 1080i HiDef content (component only, no HDMI), and this unit kicks bu_tt. Comcast is only 1080i (even through HDMI) so this can grab the signal 'full strength.
Cons: Manual is terrible. Instructions do not cover software capture module at ALL. Still don't know what things do, but I am functional! Wish someone would write about it. Problem is Arcsoft software that is similar does NOT talk about the capture because that software suite does not do it. I think it is only for this HD-PVR unit. Also, at times the application crashes, and I have to close then reopen the capture software. Not a big deal, hopefully future updates will make it better.
Other Thoughts: Wish I could convert these BlueRay ready files (.TS or .M2TS) to regular DVD. Have not found an easy way to do that so I can only give a disc to someone with a BlueRay player.

Pros: Can record from Stb DVR so no need to schedule when to record video. Ability to record MP-4 files to rewriteable DVD's up to 110 minutes at 5mb/s on a 4.7gb DVD and play back on windows media player.
Cons: Hangs up when capturing video in 480p use 480 i instead because 480p is 60fps and 480i is 30fps

Finally, HD footage on my PC

Pros: Spectacular quality HD video, using with Directv HD receiver. Edit the footage to cut commercials, rip to .avi, and bam, I have a video collection of my favorite movies, sports, games, etc.
Cons: Software is weak. For how much you spend on this, it would be nice to have better software with more features. IR blaster was a joke, couldn't get it to work. I read many posts on forums about this. Hopefully they improve that as well.
Other Thoughts: Gave this a 4 star still, because of the video quality, and even though the software is weak and the IR blaster sucks, it gets the job done and records HD to my PC.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: - Can theoretically capture HD gaming footage on-the-fly for a cheap price
Cons: - Short, stiff component cables w/o 1080p support - Frequent crashes - Flimsy build - Doesn't work after a year
Other Thoughts: Bought this to record some gaming sessions but in the end I wasted $200 for something that barely worked from the get-go and now refuses to start up, period.
