1 out of 5 eggsWorks Kind of

Pros: I am able to connect to my roof top antenna and can get my local digital over the air channels fine

1. The software starts on its own from time to time on my computer, without doing anything, so I have to mute it before closing so that it doesn't interrupt something when it starts on its own.
2. Loses signal a lot, and have to completely reboot my computer to fix.
3. I tried to connect two different composite connections and could get neither to work. I wanted to connect a VCR to convert some old VHS tapes and could never get the tuner to see the signal. I have another video device that I want to convert and couldn't get tuner to see a signal on this either. I paid more to have this functionality and can't get it to work.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this product, as it doesn't do what is advertised, and does a bunch of unintended things that will drive you nuts. Avoid at all costs.

1 out of 5 eggsSort Lifespan

Pros: Works well

Cons: Fails over time.

Other Thoughts: I have owned two of these and both failed. The first one I purchased a couple years ago from B...B.. and after about 2 years it stopped working. It got so hot on one place that it melted a hole in the case. The second one I purchased from eb.. and it only lasted about 6 months before it just stopped working. I will no longer buy these USB sticks from Hauppauge. I replaced it with a Silicon dust HD Homerun Extend. So far it works great and it has two tuners.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux

Pros: I wrote an earlier review bemoaning the fact it did not work with Linux. That has been fixed and the 955Q works with linux.

Cons: None (though I don't use the included remote or antenna).

2 out of 5 eggsWill not install Win 7 64bit

Pros: Works barely on an ancient Toshiba Win XP laptop.

Cons: Will not install on my Toshiba Win 7 pro 64bit laptop. On the XP, it records in custom ".ts" format, which is fine if you want to watch TV on your laptop. However, if you want to record it and watch it later on a TV, you must convert the .ts format to Mpeg, which takes hours, but it does do it.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk no good as a full-time tuner

Pros: Once working (drivers installed) it works OK as a add on MediaCenter tuner, it's small has decent reception range once I figured out the antenna extended I don't think the owners manual indicated this?

Cons: Overheats with long term use I just started using it camping when I switched from cable to satellite TV, before I used it as a add on to MediaCenter since my Ceton Infinitv 4 was digital cable only and my cable provider only offered the first 100+ channels in analog only? Yes it was a FCC violation but they didn't care and I had to buy something like this to record the lower channels but it was only on long enough to record one show 30 - 60 Minutes now that I have tired to use it in my RV with a I7 laptop I found out it gets very hot and locks up after a few hours of use if I fall asleep with it on when I wake up I have a frozen laptop that needs a hard reboot ! I tested it on a few other desktops and laptops and the same thing happens on all of them, the remote control is useless I never needed it before since I was using a MediaCenter remote to Control my XBOX 360's that were only being used as extenders, I am disappointed in this tuner for its price it's not worth $9.99 unless you plan on using it for short periods then giving it time to rest/cool down or be prepared to hard reset your PC, I only tried it on Windows 7 X32 and x64 so I don't know how it behaves on other OS's? But with how hot I find it when it freezes I would expect it to have issues with any OS, I am surprised that it still works after recording 3-4 shows a week for over a year.

Other Thoughts: I have a few early pc digital tv tuners that are no longer made on the big East auction site that run cooler and don't lockup but they are huge in comparison to this usb stick about 6"×6"×2" if you really need a PC tuner I would look somewhere else.

1 out of 5 eggsNot for linux... yet?

Pros: None.

Cons: Ordered the WinTV-HVR-950Q for my linux based HTPC. Received the 955Q. Wanted to return for a 950Q but never heard back from NewEgg if they had 950Q's in stock. A month later they updated the listing title to include "(WinTV-HVR-955Q)". If you are running linux, you should probably avoid for now (unless you know how to code a driver).

Pros: Works OK though slow.

Cons: I have the 850 version I bought about a year ago. The newest version of the software does not allow an upgrade because my CD is not a later version. So I either have to pay them for a newer CD or use the older and very unreliable software.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks better than my Toshiba TV tuner

Pros: This tuner is more sensitive than the tuners on both of my TV's. The free optional Signal Monitor software that's works great with this tuner helps a lot with antenna orientation, since a real signal level meter is really pricey.

Cons: The remote has not worked as easily as one would expect, but it might be me.
