2 out of 5 eggsNot as Good as Desktop Version

Pros: - Works great when it works
- great having a portable recording device
- Quick and easy.
- HDMI, USB cable & USB thumbdrive is all you need to record.

Cons: - Most video players refuse to play it or it's missing audio
- When audio is playing Audio is not the greatest
- Limited to USB 32 GB Drive
- Specs says you can use a self power drive (It's completely wrong. Tried three different drives none work)
- Doesn't use the same output format spec as HD-PVR 2, which will cause allot of problems for Youtube recorders.

Other Thoughts: If your in search for a capture device stick with Elgato or HD-PVR 2 Gaming Edition. Both work amazing.

It feels like this device is still in beta testing and have not ironed out all the bugs.

1 out of 5 eggsA pretty brick...

Pros: 1) It looks nice.
2) Its small.
3) its cheap.

Cons: For starters even with the 2 converters I have that have worked for everything (either one or the other) I couldn't get it to display anything other than the formats it supports. The software is laughably slow. Firmware actually made it worse. It seems to only be able to use low quility usb's. picture quality is ok considering but no matter wat u do and I did every thing it wouldn't get all weird sometimes (pixels) and sometimes it just flatout wouldn't turn on even when hooked up to a computer. and just so theres no "well maybe hes an idiot": I made a spread sheet of every possible setting variation in software which amounted to about 20-30 with each one of those I did a recording hooked up to the computer and console (stand alone) the recordings were one short and one long so I guess 2 for each the short one being 1-5 minutes and the long one being 10-30 mins because anything beyond that typically wouldn't even be watchable because windows, vlc, avs, and that other open source one cant remember the name wouldn't be able to track them right, I then updated the firmware and did them again, after I discovered nothing seemed to help and the higher settings somehow worked the "best". I began testing usb's and discovered while it supported usb 3.0 and 2.0 (thumb drives) it didn't accept any of my good/fast usb's (thumb drive) it only took throw away ones. I then played with the settings that r on the unit which are basically just sound and it didn't change anything other than a video I made right after I turned off the db boost didn't have any sound at all, it fixed itself next video. I also tried 3 external hdd's and non of them worked even when I made a 10, 20, 25, 30, and 32 gb partitions (all at separate times), and formatted them in both fat 32 and ntfs all three were also self powered. I think the worst part about the unit however is there is a noticeable lag in the pass through not bad but like a cheap splitter or something and it makes the picture not contrast as well, I say this is the worst part even beyond the way they either pay ppl or send them a free review unit to get good coverage because they outright say theres no lag in the pass through its one of their key words infact in almost every review. the crazy part about this all is I couldn't get ahold of happauge in about 8 or 9 days (phone or email)... I still havnt heard from them and its been another 4 days.

Other Thoughts: I wasted a week on this piece of... and had to re install windows when I took the software off because it froze every time I tried to sign in, is there a refund for that? I will say the uninstall thang could have been user error though because I was mad and just deleted everything that said happauge on it and the moment I deleted a notepad file the computer started acting funny and when I restarted it is when it would freeze so... as for newegg super fast delivery as usual just waiting to see if the rma goes through and wat not.

5 out of 5 eggsBest portable game recorder with USB Thumbdrive Support

Pros: This thing is so easy to use. Plug HDMI from console into the rocket, plug HDMI from rocket into TV. Plug USB into unused TV or game console port. Press big red button to record. Press big red button to stop recording. When you want to upload to youtube or to a video-editing program, remove the USB drive and plug into your computer. SUPER EASY. Great video quality when uploaded to youtube.

Cons: None, this is better than the competitors, because most of the competitors need a FREAKING COMPUTER attached to the the recording device. I know because I had the old Hauppauge HD-PVR.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for Youtubers

Pros: When recording the game play is lag less. It uses pass through technology which helps you with game performance while recording to a flash drive or directly to computer. This little device processes the video on the fly which keeps the heat off the computer. The software you can download from hauppauge has an option to link your youtube account and upload video without opening a browser. It also has quick edit buttons if you need to trim up the video. You can record with a flash drive on the fly up to 32 GB. I also saw somewhere in a hauppauge faq that you can record off of netflix and such but you have to use an analog signal (component cables) because HDMI uses HDCP.

Cons: The game capture software that you can download for free is kind of generic at best. I use it for the time being until i can find something better. I had a little issue with the microphone jack. I had to really push it into the slot fairly hard just to get it to pick up. Maybe that might have been my equipment but i thought it was kind of weird.

Other Thoughts: When you record on a flash drive it records the file as an MP4 which partitions every 2GB (20 Mins) which you cannot edit with the software. Something to keep in mind. The box gets a little warm but you have to remember that it does the processing on the spot so its understandable. If you want to be a youtube walkthrough sensation like theRadBrad or Ghostrobo, this is where to start. And i believe this latest firmware update allowed for PS4 and Xbox One recording as well.

5 out of 5 eggsa great standalone PVR

Pros: This unit functions exactly as expected/advertised, and was working within minutes of unboxing it. It captures stunning quality videos to a USB stick from XBox, at the press of one button. It's surprisingly easy to use and well-thought-out for gamers.

Cons: none we've found yet

Other Thoughts: We don't use the Rocket attached to a PC, we do standalone capture. So we aren't commenting on features of the included software, just the hardware used as a standalone.

4 out of 5 eggsHauppauge Rocket DVR

Pros: The Hauppauge DVR Rocket is a disappointment. It records X-box flawlessly, but will NOT allow you to copy from streaming media like ROKU, and won’t easily allow me to do the one thing I bought it for—recording a Power Point presentation off-screen of my PC. Setup is confusing. HDMI is not the one-size-fits-all solution to connection.

Cons: This device determines if you should be allowed to record. If in doubt, it says your USB thumb drive is not present, instead of telling you cannot record. Three thumb drives later, and doing a default X-box recording proved that with a 1 GB USB drive connected. X-box was a gorgeous recording in MP4 (H.264) default format. That’s all I could get it to do predictably. Worse, it recorded some screen fiddling on the PC once.

Figuring out what power-up sequence to do is daunting. Load a new disk in the X-box, and you lose your screen unless you boot all the way from scratch with everything. Blinking colored lights do not explain a piece of gear like this. It will not work with HDMI switchers encountering different HDMI restrictions. You might get better results with A/V in, but my computer doesn’t have those anymore.

Other Thoughts: It would be unfair for me to trash the device for anyone using it for Xbox or PS-3 recording. It worked very well in that regard--some of the best screen imaging from my Xbox that I've ever seen. The PC part was misleading. I thought a stand alone device would avoid the software issues of recording, but they carried those problems into the firmware for this unit. Line up all your ducks carefully, or it doesn't work.
