The Hi-Wire offers the truest conversion available between a PC and an HDTV. The clarity of the HDTV display is directly related to how close the VGA out is in dimensions and pixels to the HDTV format.

For instance, 640x480 is EXACTLY the same as 480p, so the HDTV display will be that of a true monitor in clarity. 1024x768 is closest to 720p and will look best on that HDTV resolution.

4 out of 5 eggshappy with it

Pros: setup doesn't require use of manual, just plug in vga to vga with supplied cable, plug in included component out input cable, connect component cable (not included), plug in power and turn on. choose a resolution your tv supports by pushing a button and you're good to go.

the component cable included is an input, so you can use together with your own component cables to get whatever length you need. once plugged in, even the smallest text was very clear on my hdtv. for example, the little yellow description you see when your mouse hovers over the newegg logo at the top of this site is as clear as it appears on a pc monitor.

menus are intuitive. this hardware scaler requires no drivers, so i was able to use it with my laptop running linux (should work with anything that has vga out).

settings stay even when unit is powered off. some other units out there will lose settings with every power off. it is nice to not have to adjust every time.

Cons: biggest issue:OVERSCAN! granted all tvs will have overscan, and its just the percentage of overscan varies from tv to tv. no matter how much i adjusted, there was noticeable overscan. however i was able to watch a movie without it being too distracting.

auto adjust results in funky, over saturated colors. likewise the default colors are horrible. manual adjustment of colors and manual size/position adjustment worked best.

included component adapter seems flimsy, and seems like a weak link. the cable is not very thick. no point in getting any fancy component cables, and you do need to have your own cables.

unable to test 720p, as my tv does not support it, but with 480p mode the image quality was not very good. also, even in 480p there appears to be lots of overscan. my previous video card method of connecting pc to hdtv only had overscan probs in 1080i.

Other Thoughts: does not come with component cables, the box uses a specialized cable to give you inputs. this is nice but they could have used a less flimsy feeling breakout cable or simply have built-in inputs. however with this way the heavy component cables do not weigh down/tilt the box.

unit is kind of pricey, but nice pc to hdtv for the price, and probably one of the best standalone solutions out there. very nice that it is platform independent and doesn't require drivers.

i am happy with my purchase, i just wish the overscan was a little less on my tv or that there was some magical method to underscan.

unit is very easy to use and buying from newegg is always the way to go. ordered saturday and received wednesday. nice!

picture quality is much better than using the tv out / svideo out included in my laptop. colors are more vibrant, text seems to have less shimmer to it.
