1 out of 5 eggsoh well

Pros: looked like a way I could get data off older machine tool controls

Cons: 1 - it isn't PCMCIA 1 physically compatible. I had to cut the tab back before it would go in
2 - the smallest USB drive I could get was 256k. which supposedly Fanuc can handle. it can't
in neither instance did the control see the card

Other Thoughts: really not the fault of the card. I am waiting for a CF to PCMCIA adapter now. but i won't know if it works or not until I get it. but machine controls are finicky

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsdead after a hour of use

Pros: work for a hour.

Cons: work for a hour then started to freeze up the laptop. notice a burning smell from the unit. doing a replacement see if the replacement works better.

Other Thoughts: bought this because the usb on my laptop was burn out. now that burn out and paying for return not good. if the replacement does the same thing i am out of money that i could of went to staples and got the item.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

If the replacement also got burned it may very well mean that the laptop PCMCIA slot has a broken pin, or it somehow supplied more power than it should have.

Please do not try to get another replacement. Instead, call the laptop manufacturer if it is still under warranty.

Our technical support team is available to help 9am-5pm M-F. Feel free to contact us during those business hours at support@sybausa.com

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: pretty box

Cons: Does not go into a cardbus II slot on a toshiba satellite 425CDS, the key on the left side is too thick. Research indicates that means the computer's slot is 5v while the card is 3.3v. No mention of this in the details.
Specs say it has drivers for win98, but included instructions indicate it needs minimum win2000. Included driver disk has drivers for a bunch of different manufacturers, none are "SYBA".

Other Thoughts: This is designed for older computers to add a usb port. Problem is it is apparently not compatible with the cardbus slots found on older computers. Check very carefully before buying. Unfortunately, the box was thrown away before my daughter tried to put it in her computer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK

Pros: Nice physical design with external power port for high-draw devices.

Cons: BAD MANUFACTURING....crashed 2 Windows XP laptops AND 2 Windows 7 laptops (all 4 laptops are very well maintained machines). All 4 machines gave the blue screen (critical failure warning message).

Other Thoughts: Rather pay more for true "government-grade" electronics than cheap consumer junk.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of this card

Pros: Fast transfer rates. NEC chipset.

Cons: Poor quality item. You get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: Worked for about a month on my IBM A30 laptop and then it started to lock up the computer when inserted. Had to use an exteral power supply to get it to work at all and then even that stopped working. Dropped it in the trash. Too expensive to return the item. Watch out.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsFixed an old laptop

Pros: Works
Fixed a laptop

Cons: Long USB > DC 5V connector cable when the USB port is very close.
Price rose since the last time I bought it.

Other Thoughts: This fixed an old HP Pavilion dv5029US with USB ports that detected but didn't recognize devices. Before this I tried an ExpressCard but it resulted in the same problem (yet it works fine in another laptop).

Had this for 1 month and a day and it is working fine.

3 out of 5 eggsSystem Lockup

Pros: Easy installation, reasonable price

Cons: WD Mybook USB drive locks up my Compaq 2199US laptop immediately when connecting. The 5V adaptor does not change the reaction. I tried many different hookup proceedures. Same results.

I bought it hoping I could quickly back up to the Western Digital USB drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Good

Pros: Have used it to run a Saleae Logic Analyzer and Microchip Pickit2 just fine on my T30 thinkpad with winXP Pro, as long as the power adapter is hooked up.

Cons: Should come with power adapter standard, caused bluescreens of death if the usb device needed the power adapter hooked up, could probably fail more gracefully. But works great when properly hooked up.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat for old laptops

Pros: WORKED GREAT without drivers, got USB external HDD with own power supply to work as it should.

Cons: none to date

Other Thoughts: USB HDD may require power thru supplied 5V connector. Its a great option since you can use Power supply from USB hub (most have the same connector)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well, with the right driver

Pros: I added this to a Dell Inspiron 8200 (USB 1.1). After installing the right drivers, it runs well. I've not yet checked the speed, but I compared it to onboard USB 1.1, and it was considerably faster. No external power needed for iPod, Sansa Clip, thumbdrive, optical mouse, etc.; probably a good idea to have one handy if you add an external drive. As always, Newegg's service is the BEST!

Cons: Everything worked with the card but the iPod Touch, which locked up the PC, forcing reboot. Device Manager showed the correct device IDs, and I found no memory/IRQ/PCI conflicts. Users with similar problems suggested driver necusb2.exe. After installation, the iPod (and everything else I plugged in) worked like a charm.

Other Thoughts: If you add this to an older USB 1.1 laptop, even with Windows XP-SP3, it may not have the USB 2 drivers for this NEC chipset, even with SP3 (if you upgraded before you got this card). I believe that XP-SP1 was the first version with USB 2.0 support, but if your original OEM Windows installation only recognized the onboard USB 1.1, you'll probably have to load the driver yourself. Try the XP driver (for this NEC chipset) from the SYBA site first.
