4 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 Support

Pros: Works

Cons: Nonexistent Win 8 drivers.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this to config my Cisco lab from my desktop. In case anyone was wondering, Syba has not published Win 8 drivers for this product.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with linux

Pros: Using for the same exact reason Auger mentioned, just had to get familiar with the linux commands to get this working right with Bottlerocket. Just an FYI, the included CD has a manual with linux instructions, including the correct syntax to setup the ports...READ THE MANUAL!

Cons: took a little bit to figure out linux syntax to setup, not Plug and Play on existing installation

1 out of 5 eggsToo cheap to be good?

Pros: Cheap

Cons: XP would not recognize. Tried downloading drivers from moschip and syba websites. Still no go. Uninstall/reinstall - nope. For the cost, seems not worth investing any more time.

Other Thoughts: Zero response from submitted tech report request

5 out of 5 eggsInstalled in 2 minutes

Pros: Installed in a Dell Inspiron 560 running win7 home premium in 2 minutes. it took more time to put card inside then to install drivers.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I would never recomment a usb adapter over this product. worked with serial port program with no problems at all.

5 out of 5 eggsGet it if you need a serial port

Pros: It works out of the box with a recent Linux kernel.
Dirt cheap!

Cons: None that I can come up with

Other Thoughts: I needed a serial port for my UPS and X10 Bottle Rocket after a MB upgrade. Other than having to learn setserial and stty syntax again, it was a completely painless installation. No kernel or module compiling, just plug and go. Excellent value for the cost.

5 out of 5 eggspci serial card

Pros: there is nothing wrong with this product. even used on vista and window7 with no issues. some people claim to had issues??? . i have bought serveral of these cards and again no issue. if disc drivers are needed use the netmos drivers which is plainly written on front of box. others posted trying other drivers with issues, maybe that is their problem.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsComplete Junk

Pros: The only pro this item has is that I didn't need a loan to buy it.

Cons: Complete junk. Had to magnify the instructions before installing it. Followed instructions and EVERYTHING said the drivers I had weren't for this hardware. Tried syba.com and the download also failed. Tried moschip.com and their download failed too. Finally found out that it has KNOWN ISSUES in slot 3. Moved to different slot and driver installations at least saw the card. Devices still don't work from the card, including a loopback dongle. Tried all 6 PCI slots and none make it work. Looked for phone number on syba.com site. None listed for tech support. Saw some rebate number on syba.com and called it. Apparently that's their actual number. After calling the California number and talking to some dude with a heavy Chinese accent, I was told that the card should work fine. Told that everything I confirmed in XP said the card was good. Was also told that it should work unless it's defective. Duh! Call it defective if you must, but Syba does business like a cheap 400k3r.

Other Thoughts: If you're thinking about buying a Syba product, do a few things first:

1) Hit yourself in the head with a hammer and then evaluate if you'd enjoy repeating the experience. The answer to this should be the same as the answer to buying a Syba product.

2) If you're insisting on buying this junk anyway, feel free to send me your money. I'm a more worthy cause and can guarantee that your investment wasn't a ripoff.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the inconveniences, sometimes to avoid IRQ or memory conflict you need to move the PCI card to a different slot. You can find the driver on the CD-ROM: \NetMOS\NM9835M\Win2K_XP_2003Server or you can download from the link below. All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

Regards,
Syba Customer Service

4 out of 5 eggsDriver installation tricky. Heres how.

Pros: Works fine on XP, Linux and DOS, BUT ...

Cons: My second unit arrived and got installed in a second machine. This time XP wasn't so easy. The solution turned out to be to NOT let XP find the driver, but to browse to it on the install CD.

HOW TO: XP picks the wrong driver and tries to install "unusable parallel port." and complains that the INF is invalid. Say no to all offers to find a driver, and
MANUALLY browse to \NetMOS\NM9835S for this card.

Other Thoughts: Plug n Play came out over a decade ago. The "instructions" aren't are are microsctopic. When an experienced IT professional takes an hour to figure it out, its too expensive. It wouldn't take much to put Manually browse to \NetMOS\NM9835S in larger print on the cover of the instructions. Or better yet, hire a programmer to write a good installation program.

The NM number is based on which chip is on the card, and whether it is serial or parallel.

5 out of 5 eggsGood with XP, DOS and Linux

Pros: Worked immediately with both DOS and Linux.
Only Windows XP had to look for a driver, and it found it in its own driver list. Didn't need the CD that came with it.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Ordered a second one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as it should

Pros: Reading these reviews and knowing that these add on cards are flaky sometimes I was nervous. But I needed one and it was cheap.
I'm happy. Windows recognized and configured it. I did'nt bother with the installer as that would only muck things up.
So much better than those mickey mouse USB serial thingys!

Cons: DO NOT USE THE INSTALLER USE WHAT YOUR O/S ASSIGNS IT
and you'll be OK!
