5 out of 5 eggsWorks Fine

Pros: I'm running Win7x64 Ultimate and conversion card fit the PCI-E slot solidly and works. There is no driver to install and the card is completely transparent to the operating system, so there was no way to tell if it was working until the Rosewill IEEE 1394a ExpressCard I ordered arrived. Of course you will need a driver for the inserted ExpressCard itself. The ExpressCards I have use the PCI-E instead of the USB interface so that functionality is TBD. The indicator lights showing which interface is in use is a nice touch.

Cons: None with the card so far, however in the Newegg.com details spec it appears as if the card provides "Internal USB Ports : 1x USB Port" which it does not. The internal USB port is used with an accompanying cable to connect the conversion card to a motherboard USB header to support ExpressCards that use USB instead of PCI-E. This was not an issue for me, but could be misleading to some buyers.

Other Thoughts: The only issue I had was that I initially inserted the ExpressCard upside down so it seemed not to work at first. I have a vertical case and the ExpressCard needs to be inserted with the top facing down. A quick look at the lettering next to the indicator lights will lit you know how the ExpressCard needs to be oriented, if the words are upside down then the top of the card faces down.

4 out of 5 eggsDon't get it if you CrossFireX

Pros: Easy to install if you have a free slot and a free USB connection on your motherboard. ExpressCards are nice and snug in this, and seem to be firmly held in place.

Cons: Requires a USB connection from your motherboard to the card, and won't work with it. If you have an average motherboard and case, and use a multi-card reader, you probably won't have a connection to spare.

The real problem is that it uses the PCI-express slot, and while that would normally be OK, in some motherboards you disable or downgrade other slots if you use the PCI-express slot. In a CrossFireX setup, the slot that is disabled or downgraded is the one you'd put your second graphics card into, and thus the Syba card disables the ability to do CrossFireX properly.

Given a choice between reading ExpressCards and using CrossFireX in my system, I'll take the graphics boost.

Check your motherboard manual to make sure that using the PCI-express slot doesn't screw with your setup before buying this!

Other Thoughts: Would be nice if this just worked without needing the USB connection. Would be really nice if I could find a version of this that will mount in the front of my case and use an IDE or SATA connection, instead of hogging a card slot and a USB connection.

Alas, this card is asking for too much sacrifice in my system to be worth the end result.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None.

Cons: Card doesn't work on my Win7 machine.

Other Thoughts: SYBA offered to RMA. However, the price to ship is more than half the unit cost. Basically, I lose. Period. It's past the NewEgg time period also. Fact is, I was busying RMA two WDC HDD I bought that I never got to this and realized it was bad too.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsPCI-E x1 Slot Required

Pros: The card works well, I used it to use my laptop's AverMedia TV tuner, and there are no issues so far, after driver install. The USB-B connection is great if you have a PCI USB card with a USB-A connection on the inside, and no available MOBO header (as was my case). The LEDs were a nice touch to, to let you know what interface the card is using.

Cons: The card (for whatever reason) requires that it's plugged into a PCI-E x1 slot. I don't know if it's my motherboard (MSI 790FX - GD70) or what, but this card will NOT work in a PCI-E x16 slot, even though other cards that are 1x work in the x16 slots. This is a con because I had to re-arrange all of the cards in my computer, including my ATI 5850 graphics card. Thankfully, there doesn't appear to be a performance hit, though.

Other Thoughts: I believe the USB header on the card it's self is so you can plug whatever you had to unplug to put the USB portion of the card in. For instance if you unplugged a USB port for the front of your machine to plug the card in, you can plug that USB port into the card, like a daisy chain. This, however, is not useful when you are using the larger headers.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's okay, could be better

Pros: It works.
It's cheap.
LEDs to reveal if the device is PCIe or USB.
Comes with a handy internal USB cable.
Easy install.
Easy use.

Cons: Not hot swappable. You have to restart the computer with the desired ExpressCard in the adapter in order for it to work and be detected by Windows.

Though no drivers are required for the card itself, there is a driver website in the documentation that comes with it. This website is 100% bogus. I don't know if that's their fault or what happened there, but that website doesn't have any drivers for any of their products.

Other Thoughts: If it supported hot swapping it would be the perfect card. Inexpensive, but gets the basic job done.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Works as expected. Simply converts a pcie slot to handle Expresscards, baasically a passive device. NO DRIVERS ARE REQUIRED for this card, since it simply changes the physical format from an internal card slot, to an external Expresscard slot. Since some Expresscards also have USB interfaces, an attachment to a motherboard USB port is required. Works great with a Hauppauge ATSC/NTSC/Clear QAM Expresscard I had laying around, in Windows 7.

Cons: Needs a decent instruction sheet. I figured out the USB hookup pretty quick, but noobies might have a problem. For reference, the provided cable attached to the card with the large square USB connector (like the one on a scanner or some printers), and the small, four wire connector attaches to the motherboard. The USB header on the card is unused. You MAY be able to turn the USB cable around and attach the four wire connector to the USB header on the card, and attach the other end to an outside USB port with an adapter, but I didn't try this.

Other Thoughts: You need drivers for whatever Expresscard you will be using, not this card. This card, by itself, doesn't even show up in the Device Manager since the computer really doesn't know or care that it is there. Only the Expresscard will show up. In my case, Windows 7 already had drivers for my Expresscard, so it was plug and play.

There are LEDs on the card bracket to let you know if the Expresscard is using the USB interface or the PCIE interface. A nice touch. I was curious if my Hauppauge card was pcie or USB; now I know (pcie).

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work in Win 7! Yet?

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: No drv support for win 7.
Half USB connector why not full? cant connect anything to the other on.e

Other Thoughts: After Leaving in my recently Built Desktop for over a month I decided to check for drivers for win 7 at the download site. No change so it seems I have spent $XX for nothing it seems.
