4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Works on my Ubuntu 12.10 right out of the box. No drivers necessary. Install ser2net ,a quick edit of your /etc/ser2net.conf file, a service restart and you're good to go.

Cons: It takes up two slots on your case.

Other Thoughts: I bought it on another online retailer at the time, but I shop here sometimes, so yeah =)

4 out of 5 eggsCheap RS-232 card. Works

Pros: Its cheap. Works with Windows 7 32/64 and Windows XP. 4 Serial ports.

Cons: Driver cd has 10 or so different drivers on it so might be an issue for some users if they don't know what they are doing. Not an issue here.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased a few of these over the past year and a half. They work fine in test machines that uses older serial devices. This is an RS-232 card ONLY as it's configured, and exactly what i needed.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS CARD!!!

Pros: Very inexpensive.

Cons: In case you are unaware, the chipset upon which this card is built (MCS9901) is no longer produced by MosChip. Axim has acquired this product line, but has yet to produce anything.
I had previously purchased approximately 100 of these cards / year, as they worked fine on a legacy platform. Once installed on a newer platform, they would stop functioning completely after approximately 4-8 hours of use. This isn't the biggest issue - that is trying to get technical support when an issue is identified. They do not respond, whatsoever, to attempts to reach them to correct an issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

According to our in-house testing, this card works well with all versions of Windows and Windows 7 as well. Please try again. And this time, download the newest driver from our webpage.

It is our policy to answer all inquiries within 24 hours within our normal business days. If, for any reason, SYBA failed to reply, please try again and let our management know. SYBA closely monitors all customer service issues.

We are more than willing to provide all of our customers with prompt exchanges whenever a product becomes defective. SYBA offers on-line RMAs for quick returns and exchanges. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great on Linux. Used with Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. No driver install required. Ports utilized /dev/ttyS*

Cons: Ports 3 and 4 connectors are not keyed or labeled. Instruction appear to be only for Windows. Had to guess at which port was which.

2 out of 5 eggsAwful - Reboots and crashes

Pros: Controls 4 RS232 ports!

Cons: Disable power saving for a SERIAL port? No thanks. It took me a long time to figure out that this card was the bane of my computer. Windows 7 (x64) would reboot FREQUENTLY (3 days uptime was a miracle) and blue screen. Vista was better, but still random freezing that I couldn't diagnose. There are no updated drivers on Syba's website, in fact they don't acknowledge its existence at all! Unfortunately I've owned this card almost a year, so I can't return it. I bought it when there were no reviews on newegg, but now I can see that everybody else hates it too. The only thing I'm going to use this for is the 2-port extension slot to connect my motherboard header. Now that I've removed this card, my computer runs like it should be, and shuts down properly!

Other Thoughts: Steer clear of this card and of Syba. I emailed several times to find a solution to the obvious flaws of this card, but got no response on their technical or sales addresses. The only phone numbers they list are a fax line and for checking rebate status, neither of which could connect me to a person.

3 out of 5 eggsAnother report that the PC won't shut down

Pros: Works as advertised, gives the 4 COM ports.

Cons: Driver install not intuitive. Requires multiple reboots under Win2k3 server.

We've tried other cards from SIIG, SYBA, Startech - this is the only one that doesn't let your PC shutdown correctly.

The supposed disabling of ACPI isn't acceptable, as most modern operating system won't boot in correctly without ACPI to be set to on.

Other Thoughts: A product to avoid if you don't want headaches. If you have time to kill, this gives a great price point.

1 out of 5 eggsworks, but will not let the computer shut down

Pros: Works ok as RS-232 card.

Cons: Card causes the computer to automatically re-boot when you tell the system to "shutdown". There are NO BIOS or driver fixes to date.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Under your computer BIOS settings, please go to Power Management and set the ACPI setting to disabled. . All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Seems to work as expected.

Cons: After installing this card, my computer automatically turns itself back on after I turn it off. I have to hold the power button down to force it to stay off. I've been through every BIOS setting and cannot find anything that fixes the problem. I have a PCI serial port card from a different vendor which does not cause the same problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Under your computer BIOS settings, please go to Power Management and set the ACPI setting to disabled. All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great on my Vista Home Premium System. Installation was simple and automatic.

Cons: only has 4 ports and I need 6! Also, I had no clue which port was which. I had to walk myself through a working program in order to figure out which phyiscal port was COM2, 3, 5, 7

1 out of 5 eggsCard not for RS422 or RS485

Pros: RS232 ports work as expected

Cons: Device is advertised as supporting RS485. However, after talking to a SYBA technication, they informed me I would need a RS232 to RS485 adaptor for 485 to work.
