2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't do the job

Pros: Windows 8.1 sees the card and install drivers automatically.

Cons: I've purchased this card mainly to capture HDV-video from my old Sony HC7 and FX7 HDV-camcorders. Both Vegas Pro and Premiere Pro CC recognize camcorder, connected to this card, I can even rewind the tape from the program but instead of video I can see only blue screen... capture doesn't work either. I replace this card with the analog based on VIA chipset (this card is based on JMicron chipset) and all tasks run flawless.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Perhaps you were not using the updated drivers from JMicron for the JMB38x chipset.

Please navigate to the JMicron chipset to find the latest drivers available to ensure optimal results.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks for DV camcorder capture

Pros: Works great for capturing DV video from my Sony DV camcorder using Premiere Elements 10 on Win7. Its on-card header provides support for cases with a front panel firewire port. Comes with a standard sized DV cable that one might spend half the price of this card to buy from a local shop.

Cons: I had to use the bottom most pci-e slot in my mobo since when the case front panel firewire connector is plugged in the header, the connector obstructs the slot below the card. If the header was angled 90 degrees this would not have been an issue (I own a sound card with such an angled on-card header for front panel audio connector). No provided software CD.

Other Thoughts: I had to install the driver found online to get the card to work; it was simple to get from the vendor's web site. This card completes my new i7 computer build; seems firewire has been dropped from contemporary mobo designs (no big surprise). For the price, even with its funky header, getting this card was a no-brainer for me.

4 out of 5 eggsGood inexpensive card

Pros: Inexpensive, on board header, cable included, low profile and full height brackets.

Cons: header position could make things cramped with internal cable attached.

Other Thoughts: There seem to be a lot of similar (actually identical looking) cards on the market. I bought one under a different name, and the QA was terrible and it literally pulled the header off the motherboard. The one from Syba contains warranty contact and support information, fit and worked perfectly, and was still inexpensive.

The card supports hot plugging of devices, and I had no problems with the computer recognizing my DV camcorder even if I turned it off, on, unplugged it, plugged it back in, etc. As long as it was on and connected, the computer saw it, which is a step up from the built in 1394a from my former Intel DG45ID board.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect...

Pros: I needed a 1394 card so I could wire up the 1394 connection on the front panel I have a new computer build. This card has the internal header for doing that. Computer recognized it, I'm happy.

Windows 8 64bit

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work for DV Capture

Pros: None, doesn't work

Cons: Lousy hardware. Can't capture video from my Canon HV20.

Other Thoughts: I contacted SYBA support and was told "Please go to your device manager and make that this card shows up in there with no yellow exclamation point next to it. If the yellow exclamation point is there then please try to update the driver for the card by using Windows own set of drivers. I believe you will need to use the legacy driver."

But this did nothing to fix the problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This Firewire card is a plug and play card for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems. If the card shows up under the Windows device manager in working condition, the problem might be in the video editing/capture software. There also might be a compatibility issue with the Firewire card and the video software.* We suggest that the customer tests the Firewire port(s) with another firewire device. By doing this, it will confirm if our Firewire card is working properly.

We are committed to deliver the best customer service to each of our customer.

We encourage our customer(s) to keep open communication with us. If our support team is unable to resolve the issue after the first attempt, we ask you to be patient with us as we try to find a solution to the problem.

Thank you again for purchasing our products. Our business depends on your satisfaction. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support@sybaUSA.com for our warranty service.

Regards, Syba Customer Service AA 020915

* Some video editing software requires additional configuration Firewire port and type of driver within the program.

2 out of 5 eggsNOT for Pro Audio

Pros: May work for most Firewire devices. Did not test on other equipment.

Cons: Would make sound using Microsoft Sound Mapper on 2-3%. Otherwise, output was only white noise. Could not use any ASIO drivers.

Other Thoughts: Bought for use with a MOTU Ultralite. Read KB article on MOTU site, recommended a card with TI or Lucent chip, exchanged for SIIG NN-440012-S8. New device worked instantly.

Apparently MOTU devices and some other Firewire audio devices can only work with TI or Lucent chips. Do your research.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for purchasing our Syba products. Please consult with the equipment manufacturer for compatibility. As certain equipment require a certain firewire chipset. I would like to point out that we can also issue RMA returns. We always try to provide the most reliable products to our customers and all products come with at least 1-year warranty. So please don't hesitate to contact us at support@sybausa.com for replacement or question.

2 out of 5 eggssomewhat works

Pros: Has connector for front panel port.

Cons: Slows/freezes with large data transfers on external firewire drive.

Other Thoughts: Used with external 1394A hard drive. Works ok for casual file access. When transfering larger amounts of data (30+GB) I found it slows/freezes. I have no problems with same drive on USB.
