5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value for the money

Pros: Easy to setup, small form factor fits is most every case. A cheap alternative to DigiBoards or other multi-serial-port hardware

Cons: The numbers on the octopus cable have no correlation to the number of the COM port, but that's easily figured out via trial-and-error.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to install in a PC to connect to Cisco routers and switches for a lab. This device works perfectly for this application.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap card but beware

Pros: Cheap six port card.

Cons: Not sure what to make of the problem but we are using this card to connect to four RS-232 vacuum gauges and have been having problems communicating with them. As another reviewer mentioned, 2 ports are detected as high speed PCI-serial ports and four are ISA-serial ports. We are writing custom software to log vacuum data from the gauges but keep getting data transmission errors. So far all problems point to the serial card as the two PCI-serial ports function just fine but the ISA ports drop frames of data. It could be a code problem though.

We will have to purchase a more costly card with 100% PCI UART's on board.

Other Thoughts: I suppose this card is great for connection to multiple terminal/console ports but for real time industrial control and data acquisition, this card is not worth the trouble.

Even though we had trouble with our software, it does not mean it is a bad card. It just does not suit our needs or we need to tweak our software. I am giving it four eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsSetting the record straight

Pros: I wrote previously that only 5 of the 6 ports were detected after a reboot. I did try the card in another machine and found that all 6 were detected, so it wasn't a hardware failure. I then reinstalled it in the first machine, but again only 5 ports were recognized. I then found in Device Manager an unrecognized device under "other devices"; when I selected Install Driver, the missing port showed up again. So it was Windows problem rather than a Syba problem.

Cons: None now.

4 out of 5 eggsFive out of six -- close but no cigar

Pros: Windows 7 recognized the card and installed the drivers without trouble.

Cons: Six ports were recognized initially, but now I see only five. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, but only 5 ports are recognized. I may try the card in another machine to see what happens there, but I can't see why it should be any different.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great on Windows 7

Pros: Works great for exactly what I intended it for. Saves me the roughly $200 I would have spent on an access server.

Cons: WHQL driver on vendor's website was corrupt zip file. Doesn't matter because other drivers worked fine.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card to connect multiple console cables to a Cisco rack consisting of 2 switches and 2 routers. I used device manager to install the driver approx 3 times to get everything up and running. This sounds weird but not all the serial ports are recognized the same. I installed the driver once each for two "High-Speed PCI Serial Ports" and once for a "PCI-ISA Communication Port" that actually has 4 ports contained in it. Functionality wise, you can't tell the difference in connecting to the console ports of the Cisco gear (9600 bps).

I read something somewhere about having to boot Windows up in a special driver mode that ignored unsigned drivers, but I have yet to do this at all.

I'm very pleased with this purchase.
