5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cards

Pros: Full height and low profile brackets included. Just works.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have been using these for years. I setup systems that require up to 4 serial ports, so I usually buy two of these at a time. These work great with older touch screens, thermal receipt printers, debit pin pad devices and customer tower displays. I have not had a problem with any of them. Some have been going for years without issue so far. This is the only one I will buy.

1 out of 5 eggsFlaky garbage with Win7

Pros: Works for a little while

Cons: Device fails with Windows 7 64 bit

Other Thoughts: After installation the 2 port card seemed to be working fine as I had console sessions from both COM1 and COM2. Then, later without any previous issues, both COM ports froze and would NOT respons. I tried reseating the cables plugged into the COM ports, no dice. Tried reseating the console cables connected to end devices before that, no dice. Rebooted PC, no dice. Uninstalled the COM ports in device manager (which of course in device manager it said "devices are working properly"...as always lol) and rebooted. Upon reboot the device automatically reinstalled and worked...for a little while. I'm going to take this back to my local retailer and order something off the internet. Probably from here at Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 NoNo

Pros: It fits that's all.

Cons: This is the second board from syba. the first locked up my computer and I had to go to the restore to be able to startup. After talking to a service tech at syba, I returned the board for this one. Windows 7 compatability mode must be used to install drivers. I am able to use the putty program to access the psk31 unit. I cannot see my unit from Psk31 program. I sent sn urgent request for windows 8 drivers two weeks ago, but have not heard anything from them. DO NOT BUY THIS BOARD UNTIL THE RIGHT DRIVERS ARE AVAILABLE!!!!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Due to the size of the driver, we were not able to e-mail it as an attachment.
However, the driver is on our website for download.

If your Windows 8 has trouble installing the card, please contact our technical support team for step by step walk through.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work on Win7 64-bit

Pros: Might work on other OSes.

Cons: We got a bunch of these in to replace the old SYBA Serial PCI cards in new systems for customers, now that our motherboards only have PCI-Express. However, we could not get them to work under Windows 7 64-bit, just like the other poster said: it just randomly fails. We ordered a bunch of these, and tried 5 different cards on 3 different motherboards with the same results every time. The card would just randomly stop working - it would work for awhile, and then hang the application when trying to transmit. The only way to fix it was to reboot.

We tried everything - re-installing drivers, un-installing then re-installing drivers (using the latest from SYBA's website), disabling one of the two ports in device manager, nothing worked or made any difference. It failed in our application. I wrote a simple, bare-bones serial loopback application, which also failed. We tried a 3rd party system test tool, and that also failed. All of them failed in the same way - it just randomly hangs on a transmit call, and then will never transmit again for any application until you reboot. 3 hours was the longest it ever went before failing.

Finally, I e-mailed SYBA's technical support e-mail ('support@sybausa.com' - copied and pasted here from my sent mail) last Friday, and it is now Thursday and still no response in my e-mail or spam folders.

We got in a different (more expensive) card from a different manufacturer, and it has worked flawlessly since, just by dropping it in where the SYBA card was.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for any issues that you are having.

Perhaps its the devices you plugged into the card that are having a problem. We tested our product and we were able to get it recognized by the system it was connected to easily. Also your description says the card works.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks some of the time...

Pros: The card offers the ability to add RS232 to a PCIe slot. Works well for running legacy scientific equipment (when it works).

Cons: After installing the card and drivers, I tested the card (I used it to acquire data from a piece of laboratory equipment that only has RS232 output) to see how it performed when acquiring data for 6 hours straight. During the initial test, and every subsequent test, the card would lose communication with the measurement device. As a sanity check, I connected the lab equipment to a computer with onboard RS232 support and saw no problems that I could pin to the lab equipment. I tried to troubleshoot the product for about 1 week before deciding that the lab technicians would not have the time to attempt to troubleshoot the card after every single test, and would also be restricted to tests lasting only 2 or 3 hours. I was extremely disappointed by the product. I ended up going with a USB 2.0 adapter instead, which has given me no trouble at all over the last two weeks.

Other Thoughts: This card may work for some applications, but is not suitable for laboratory equipment that acquires data for days at a time at a rate of 1000 data points per second. Even lowering my measurement acquisition rate would not allow me to conduct measurements over the time period that I require for my experiments.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

SYBA is one of the largest manufacturers in the Serial/ Parallel controller cards business.

Serial RS232 is an old technology and this card is based on a reliable chipet, MSC9922, made by a well known Serial/Parallel chipset manufacturer.

The problem described in the feedback might be caused by the following:

1. The OS, Windows or DOS
2. The software written to perform the lab test. Maybe it was written to run with old DOS based PC?

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: It doesn't blue screen the system MOST of the time.

Cons: The supplied driver CD has drivers for about 20 different products and its hard to tell which ones are for the card. Get a failed installation ANYTIME I try to run a driver install. The only way I have gotten Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit build to install a driver for it is when I use Windows Update. Every time it installs it blue screens the system. Eventually after enough reboots the device manager does pick it up. Found out today that it just plain doesn't work even if the drivers do successfully install.

Other Thoughts: We build servers for point of sales systems based off of an HP Proliant N40L microserver. You can find them here on newegg. Its basically a custom mobo with a Radeon HD 4200 and an AMD 785 chipset. All we add is 2 drives in RAID1 and a bump to 4GB of RAM. Today was the first time we actually had to run a printer off of the serial port on the server and we found out the hard way that it just plain doesn't work. Will NEVER buy again, considering returning the ones I still have in stock. COMPLETE CR@P.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

SYBA is one of the top manufacturers of reliable Serial controller cards.

In your feedback, a microserver was mentioned. Please make sure that there is a voltage jumper besides the PCI-e slot. Our Serial card is a 3.3V card, and it is not designed for Servers. If you can adjust the voltage to 3.3V, you should be able to make the card to work.

The location of the driver is clearly indicated in the users manual. However, if there is a problem, please contact our technical support team and we will be more than happy to assist you in any way possible.

1 out of 5 eggsRamdom fail with win7

Pros: Install OK and even win7 will update drivers.

Cons: Similar cards but PCI issued to work OK but pci-e ramdomly fail. Need to restart to make it work again. (win7 pro)

Other Thoughts: It happens with dell, emachines, acer, so is not the pc...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

This card has been tested on Windows 7.

From your description, it might be a simple driver issue. Please un-install the driver and manually re-install the driver. Use the driver on the CD provided or download the latest driver from our website. Your Windows might be automatically installing the wrong driver or an old driver.

We are more than willing to provide all of our customers with prompt exchanges whenever a product becomes defective.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 2 Ports, Low Profile Bracket, Works

Cons: This card has some noise issues. Other cards on the same line have never had issues with noise.

Other Thoughts: There were not many low profile serial cards to choose from, especially if you're looking for PCI Express x 1.
