1 out of 5 eggsstraps not documented but need ECP

Pros: This board would probably work in systems older than the one I just purchased.
It was easy to install.
It would probably work for most applications.

Cons: The latest desktop does not have any bios support to configure the parallel port for ECP mode (or any mode). Other manufacturers of parallel port cards have responded by moving the straps to the actual card. This card has straps marked on the board, but they are not documented. I will seek the answer to this issue, but may have to return for a more recent or bettor documented board.

Other Thoughts: wish I knew what the straps on the board do. A flier could be added to the box to document it? Or is it protected info?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

SYBA is one of the largest I/O PCI/PCI-e card manufactrers. We can help you if you give us a call.

This card should work with all current systems. However, some of the DOS based programs might not regonize the Parallel/Serial port due the the bad programming.

Under Windows, all the setup are easy and simple. Simply visit the device manager, users should be able to access all the available features offered by the card.

In any case, you are welcome to contact our technical support team. As you know we are more than happy to provide our customers with a hassle free exchange when a product is defective.

Our technical support team is available to help 9am-5pm M-F. Feel free to contact us during those business hours at support@sybausa.com

SYBA offers an on-line RMA form, the user can easily fill out the form and submit it for a quick RMA return and exchange. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback. We value all positive and negative feedback.

Regards, SYBA CST 12062012

3 out of 5 eggsDon't believe the pictures! part 2

Pros: It can be made to work with Linux, but ...

Cons: ... it takes _way_ too much hunting, and Linux expertise.

First of all, the book and the CD that come with the card are misleading. The Linux drivers they point o are very dated. The MCS9901CV chip that this card uses (which I suppose could change at any time) is no longer made or supported by MosChip.

See www asix com tw/ for ASIX, which bought this product line. There you will find
I/O Connectivity -> PCIe Bridge -> MCS9901 with modern Linux drivers for download.
"Linux kernel 2.6.x driver without Cascade" / MCS99xx_NoCascade_Linux_driver_v1.0.0.1 is what I used. I added the shell script below to the mcs99xxx file that needs to go into /etc/init.d/ and
(on many Linux distributions) linked to /etc/init.d/rc2.d/20mcs99xx .

If you don't understand the previous paragraph, then find some who does. You'll keep more of your hair that way.

Other Thoughts: Could Newegg sponsor a corner of the site for this sort of help, maybe segregated by OS?

Modified mcs99xx script:

1 out of 5 eggsDon't believe the pictures!

Pros: I have not used it yet. I need to rethink the layout of the
case's back panel.

Cons: The photographs show the DB9 connectors on the bracket
with the circuit card and the DB25 connector on a separate bracket with a 25 lead ribbon cable to the circuit card.
I was counting on that layout.

But the card I got looks more like the SYBA PCI-Express 1-Port Parallel/Printer Card with Low Profile Bracket - Model SD-PEX10005. The connector pads at the top of the circuit card populated with 9-pin headers and the DB9s connect to them with ribbon cables.

So I have to rethink my layout because I don't have much hope of getting the card layout illustrated and
I've run out of time to do an RMA process.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for purchasing our SYBA products. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We will notify Newegg to update the new design photographs for this card. The function of the card remains the same. If you have more product related questions, please contact us at support@sybausa.com

3 out of 5 eggsSo-So

Pros: Low cost, does mostly what is advertised. Serial ports OK, parallel port is a problem.

Cons: The parallel port relies on system calls, and so does not reside at the 'normal' port addresses. Win XP sees the port, but no opportunity to set the port mode (ECP, EPP etc). Programs that use the parallel port directly will not work.

Other Thoughts: The card bracket has only the parallel port on it - the 2 serials are on a separate bracket.

2 out of 5 eggsSame as a USB-to-serial

Pros: Works properly for standard serial transmissions; effectively the same as a USB-to-serial converter. Worked on Windows 7 with drivers from CD.

Cons: It outputs +/-5V, like USB-to-serial converters do, rather than the +/-12V that is standard for built-in PC serial ports. That means it didn't work with my device (a JDM programmer for PIC microcontrollers). For the price, I expected it to duplicate the full PC standard.

Other Thoughts: It will work fine if you're doing standard serial TX/RX, but don't buy it for older devices that rely on full use of the serial port specification. (I ended up just giving up on getting my device to work, and bought a newer equivalent. Not sure if the other PCI-to-serial cards on here would have worked better or not.)
