5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: I'm using the SYBA 8 Serial Port PCI card to access my Cisco lab and it works great. I added a 25 foot Amphenol cable to extend it to my data closet and it still works great.

Cons: No cons.

4 out of 5 eggsA lot of work, but it's worth it.

Pros: - Very cheap for what it does. This is the cheapest 8-port serial card I've seen.
- PCI interface supports a lot of older computers. This is running a small terminal server for me to use remotely, which is made from mostly spare parts.
- Works. Does exactly what it says it would.

- Individual 9-pin (Male) connectors are numbered, 1-8. The way this was for me, it worked out as COM3 through COM10. Connector 1 was COM3, connector 4 was COM6, etc.

Cons: Driver installation was pretty difficult. Under XP SP3, I downloaded the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website (Google searched the model#), had to run setup, then open Device Manager and install the driver for the main card, which created 8 new serial port interfaces, each of which had to have the drivers manually installed. I still don't know what the "software" that came with it is for, how to use it, or if I even need it. I ran it once to open all the COM ports. I'm not sure if it did anything. The whole process was sloppy and time consuming and took a lot of technical knowledge.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card to put in a Cisco lab. It works out nicely because it lets me have console access direct to all the switches in my lab without using telnet or SSH. It allows me to have a lab running in a different part of my house, without all the fans, noise, and heat that goes along with it.

The driver installation wasn't as easy as just running setup, and actually did take a while to setup each individual card, but it only had to be done once and it has been working fine, even after a couple of reboots, and the port numbers have not changed on me. This might be different under Windows 7

1 out of 5 eggsNot working at all.

Pros: None

Cons: Does not support Linux as it described. Contact support hope to get the answer or driver. Try on Linux 2.6.24 to Linux 2.6.32. Download driver from Syba website and produce the same result.
