3 out of 5 eggsHere's how you get it to work!

Pros: Works - after I beat it into submission

Cons: I had to beat it into submission.

Other Thoughts: Here's how you get this card to work.
1) Download latest Renesas USB 3.0 drivers and install
2) THEN install card
3) Connect external harddrive to USB ** 2.0 ** port first
4) My computer -> right click on drive -> properties -> hardware -> select drive -> properties -> general -> change settings -> policies -> "better performance" -> OK
5) Start -> Programs -> Renesas Electronics -> Host Controller Utility -> Make sure "Disable USB 3.0 Power Management Functions" is UNCHECKED.
6) Safely eject drive, then reconnect to USB 3.0 port.
This should allow the computer to connect at Super Speed (I get about 100MBps)

No Hot Swap Driver is lost, Server must be shut down
and restarted.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes Not work

Pros: None

Cons: Some times it appears in Device Manager, Some times
not

The Driver from the SYBA support web site adds a LOT of entries to the registry. I do not think it has been thoroughly debugged

Other Thoughts: This Card is defective. I have tried multiple drivers and firmware updates, to no avail. Sometimes it decides to work, and sometimes it does not appear to windows. I have tried cleaning the PCI-e slot, flashing the firmware of the NEC/Rensas controller , manually editing the registry, even deleting the driver files from the windows directory. I spent too many hours of work without any change in it's behavior. If you like solving puzzles without solutions, purchase this card. SYBA products appear to be the cheapest products available on NewEgg. I will not purchase them ever again.

My system:
Motherboard ASUS m3a78-em
Chipset AMD 780G
CPU AMD Phenom 9600

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry that you were unable to fully utilize the capabilities of this USB 3.0 Card. We do not recommend flashing any of our cards because it can void their warranty. Aside from warranty issues, flashing a card can lead to irreversible consequences. We highly suggest you use the drivers from our site since they are what the chipset manufacture provides us with. We do update our driver packages routinely, so please check our site for the most up to date drivers. As for the recognition issue, a bad PCI slot or the card not being properly seated can be to blame.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your feedback. We value all positive and negative feedback.

Pros: Worked great, but only for about 2 weeks. Not much of a "Pro".

Cons: After about two weeks it started to intermittently not boot when the computer did. Sometimes re-running the installation disk would work, but only sometimes. Then I read some of the other reviews, and noticed info about connecting it to a SATA power supply. Went back to the installation directions, and didn't see anything about connecting a power supply other than the motherboard, but when I opened the computer case, and sure enough, there was a SATA connector on the board. I connected a SATA power source to it, and after reinstaling the driver, it worked, but for only 1 boot. It hasn't worked since.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Steve,

Please contact us at your earliest convenience. If the card suffered a power surge for whatever reason, we will gladly replace it at no cost to you. We back all of our cards with an industry leading hassle free warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsRevising my initial review

Pros: See my previous review in light of this one.

Cons: I am having intermittent trouble with the driver. Sometimes the external SSD drive is recognized; sometimes not. Every time I reboot, Windows 7 wants to "reinstall" the driver; sometimes, I get an error message that the driver has not been installed. Plus, since I installed the Syba-supplied driver on Day 1, this is particularly annoying.

Upon investigation, I noted that Syba's most recent driver is a "beta" -- come on guys: if you don't have a ready-for-primetime driver, don't put the product on the market.

Also, the through-put isn't particularly good for USB 3.0.

Color me disappointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Bob,

We are sorry to hear of your frustration with this card. Please make sure that the power connector in the back of the card has been connected to a power source. We highly recommend downloading the latest drivers for this card directly from our website. Doing so will ensure you install the most up to date vesrion. If you require further assistance, do not hesitate to email our support team.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised, but wrong drivers included

Pros: I was looking for a simple solution to add USB 3.0 support to my 2-year old AMD-II X4 system, and this controller did the trick. I had to give up my "graphics card" PCIe X16 slot (as it is the only PCIe V2 slot on my Asus M4A785TD-M mobo - the PCIe X1 slot is V1). But no big deal for me, as I use the decent integrated graphics (purchased the mobo for that reason).
Transfering from my system's SATA-based WD Caviar Black 7200RPM internal drive to my WD Passport 500GB USB3.0 drive, transfer speeds increased by up to 60% over USB2.0 ports (i.e., more than cut the time in half). From my testing, that's about what I would have expected if I were directly transfering between two SATA devices of comparable specs. Frankly, main limitation now is the spindle speed and data rates of the drives themselves.
The card looked the same as shown here.

Cons: Packaging was sparse - but worse, it came with the wrong manual and driver disk! The bundled manual was for some sort of Syba SATA6G SSD/HDD Tiering card, and the none of the drivers on the disk worked (for that matter, the bundled drivers didn't even match what was in the included wrong manual). I still use Windows XP on this system, so proper driver support was important to me.
No problem, just downloaded updated drivers from the sybausa website (search for the SY-PEX20124 part number and you'll find them). Although the usual warnings about not being signed by Microsfot came up, they still installed and worked fine.

Other Thoughts: So far, it seems to be a decent bare-bones solution for adding USB 3.0 support. But that's assuming your system has a free PCIe V2 slot. But if you don't, you might as well update your mobo anyway (PCIe V1 doesn't really have the bandwidth).

4 out of 5 eggsBesides the defective unit. It's fine.

Pros: This card uses a new 3rd gen Renesas chipset (Controller: NEC uPD720202) so it's supposed to be faster than the 2nd gen.

Cons: The first one I got was randomly unrecognized by the Windows so I sent it back for a replacement. The second one has been working fine and no problem has found so far.

Other Thoughts: The time I was shopping for a 3rd gen USB 3.0 this was the only brand that they had. So, if you can wait I would say wait until more brands come out.

Newegg customer service was very helpful with the replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Luck

Pros: I'm sure that if i got a good one it might have some.

Cons: Unfortunately for me the one i got wasn't even recognized as being connected in either of my pci-e slots so i returned it hoping to get a good one the second time around. Cost me an extra $10 to send it back and the new one is only recognized half the time.

Other Thoughts: In case anyone is curious the second slot that i tried it in is working with an ASUS PCE-N10 so i am positive that the issue is not with my motherboard. I should have just spent the extra money and bought a better one.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer;

Please make sure the SATA power connector on the back of the card is connected to a SATA power source.

Maybe the card is not getting enough power from the PCI-e x1 slot to work properly.

We are more than willing to provide all of our customers with prompt exchanges whenever a product becomes defective.

We are truly sorry for any inconvenience caused to you. We stride in our customers' satisfaction.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's cheap and it works!

Pros: This product is well priced and works without hassle.
Unlike some other brands, it is made with an SATA power connector -- IMO, better than a molex connector and much better than add-on cards with no power in addition to that supplied by the PCI-Express slot.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Don't forget to use the included mini CD-rom disk to install the RENESAS Host-Driver!
