5 out of 5 eggsWD TV Play Media Player WDBMBA0000NBK-HESN

Pros: Plays everything
USB
cat5 and wireless
Remote and phone app

Cons: Not much here. I sometimes it will "lock up" and boot fixes it. Hey its a electronic, it happens.

Other Thoughts: This thing plays EVERYTHING! Unlike other players that can be picky. This will stream pretty much everything from my media server and it also has USB. I've had this for about 3 yrs now and she's still tick'n. I would like to see some firmware updates but other than that's its a great device.

Pros: It plays vudu, hulu, netflix, and so on.

Cons: slow
sometimes doesnt turn off
gets hrribly worse with age.. hen it wasnt even that good to begin with.
not quality i would expect from WD

Other Thoughts: Bought this back in 13... seemed like a decent little device.. shoudl of went with a roku or something... it is slow.. sometimes it is hard to tell if it didnt recieve remote input or just has a really large dely(especialyanoying when rewinding. it in no way ages well... just not worth it.. bsides, if you are looking now there are better things out there in general.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent little media player

Pros: I use this primarily at a second home that doesn't have cable or internet to stream video and audio to the entertainment system from an external hard drive. It works pretty well, although the UI could really use some improvement. The main screen is nice and when I originally set it up at home to test it, the app functionality seemed to work well.

Cons: When you have thousands of video and audio files on a hard drive you have to page through the list which can take some time. If you know the exact title you can search, but since there is no keyboard on the remote you still have to arrow to each letter. These are minor complaints, but still affect the rating.

3 out of 5 eggsNeed much improvement

Pros: Very cheap at shell shocker price, netflix, play most media from NAS, Wifi biult in

Cons: Remote very unresponsive, freezes too much, slow navigation.

Other Thoughts: I could not ask much more for the price I paid. I use it for netflix for the kids, it is very slow responding to the remote and starting up, freezes all the time. I would not buy it at the full price, but half the price in shell shocker was ok.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: After posting a lack luster review of the product WD sent me a Email that gave me the needed information to get the box to work. Does everything that I purchased it for. Would buy again!!

Cons: None at this time, with very little help from WD I've got everything working like I wanted.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks on Internet BUT

Pros: Works well streaming off of the internet

Cons: I purchased the unit to stream movies over my computer network, when purchasing the item they say that it is possible. After getting the unit and reading the paperwork it barely even mentioned this option. After searching the net I was unable to find a solution that would make this possible.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product except...

Pros: Great way to watch my computer tv and film content...works with avi and mp4 files (haven't tried wmv yet). Doesn't play mkv or flv though which no big deal to me, however.

Cons: the cable hook-up to the TV is VERY BAD...do yourself a favor and either order or buy a hdmi cable when you get this as the difference is night and day...no foolin'!!

Other Thoughts: the concept is awesome and I should have brought one of these years ago but....I didn't ! Even thou the cable just plain sucks, I still gave this product a 5 "egg" rating because it's cheap enough to fix on your own.

4 out of 5 eggsGood little media player

Pros: Price, small, compact, great video and sound
Very fast hookup, recognized network quickly
Remote is responsive, easy to use

Cons: Does not power down external USB drive, sometimes have to re-power unit for it to come back on after sitting for a couple of days

Other Thoughts: WD's econo media box, does the primary things, don't expect more for the money, Netflix and USB media play are it's primaries, ...if it doesn't work for your odd ball file types, don't complain, take it back and buy something twice the price...nuff said

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this product if you want to access your personal media collection over the local network

Pros: Low Price

Cons: Doesn't locate supported .MOV video files on Network Attached Storage with DLNA Media Server.
Can't locate all pictures on PCs sharing media (only locates 1 picture in a folder that has 20 pictures taken with the same camera).

Other Thoughts: From the manual:This section describes how you can use the media player to access your digital
media collection over the local network.
Access network attached storage – view and play back digital media content
stored on your network attached storage (NAS) device with a DLNA media
server.
Attach USB storage – attach a USB storage device to the media player
containing media files.

I have a DNLA Media Server, but the WD TV Live can't see the files.

I've opened a support ticket with Western Digital to address the issue, but I feel that I will soon be requesting a RMA from newegg.com and be ordering the WD TV Live. The "Live" supports accessing from network drives, so you don't have to deal with the DLNA Media Server mess (limitation).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Lou37, we apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced with your device. Please note that the WD TV Play is designed to be an easy to use solution for users that wish and give priority to access the wide variety of online services that come included, it is also compatible with the most common video and audio formats, along with several options to access your home media through DLNA compliant devices.
