1 out of 5 eggsannoying and problematic

Pros: Works really well, super fast speeds. I've noticed that it runs even faster with the power pins attached. BUT ITS A "TOOL"!

Cons: Many. This thing is a pain in the rear...Caused me hours of frustration. I have 2 Fire wire 400 drives, and 2 firewire 800 drives.

I am a video editor, and whenever I would plug my DV camera into this it would shut off, and be a little...pain. Every single time I tried to capture footage my entire computer would lock up and I thought at first.....ok not enough power to the board....so i connect the molex power.....oh nope...that's not it, problem still there....then i come to the conclusion
that its my camera interacting with the board incorrectly
or something like that....turns out...it is the BOARD it self.
So, bought another one, diffrent brand, got both in there. Everything is fine and dandy now.

Other Thoughts: DON'T BUY THIS!

3 out of 5 eggsResearch required to get it to work

Pros: Well built
Has both 1394a and 1394b

Cons: Unable to get 1394b mode (800Mbps) to work on XP SP2 with Asus A7V mainboard. Blue Screen on bootup if card is installed while using driver from the CD. Removed IEEE card and XP boots fine.
No info on driver as it's contained inside a single EXE file.
Newer driver from website runs without blue screen crash but speed was slow on new Western Digital Pro series 750GB drive.

400Mbps cable ran at 33MB/sec
800Mbps cable ran at 16MB/sec
I gave up and sent it back.

I'm back to my old IEEE 1394a card now and it works 100% of the time.

SIIG uninstall program left fragments all over the computer, in the registry. Manually removed about 25 entries.

Other Thoughts: I would prefer that SIIG provide a driver package, not just 1 EXE file. SIIG web site did not have newer driver listed but their tech sent a link to it. Tech answer was very brief to my detailed questions.

The driver used by SIIG is actually from a company called UniBrain.

Microsoft downgraded Firewire speed in XP SP2 to limit it to 100Mbps. SP1 was faster. Later Microsoft put out a patch to fix the SP2 limitation.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The 1394a port works.

Cons: I could not get the 1394b ports to work with my Maxtor III 1.5T external drive. I could only get the 1394a port to work when I removed the drivers that came with the card.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Choice

Pros: Easy to install and works with Vista ultimate 32bit. I like the fact that it uses a floppy disk power cord for the extra power adapter on the board.

Cons: Drivers aren't microsoft certified.

Other Thoughts: This is my first firewire 800 card that I've purchased, which is why I gave myself a tech level of 4. I am extremely pleased with the transfer rates with my newegg item: N82E16822204022

5 out of 5 eggs800 FIREWIRE IS BOSS

Pros: SPEED! i OWN 3 EXTERNAL 800 FIREWIRE DRIVES AND THIS SIIG PCI CARD HAS BEEN KEEPING THEM RUNNING SAFE FOR OVER 4 YEARS NOW. I HAVE NOT HAD 1 PROBLEM WITH THIS CARD OR THESE DRIVES AND I RUN THEM 24/7. 800 FIREWIRE IS (AT MIN) 5 TIMES FASTER THAN ANY USB CONNECTION. I ALSO HAVE 4 INTERNAL SATAS WITH 16MB CACHES AND 800 FIREWIRE IS AT LEAST 3 TO 4 TIMES FASTER THAN THEM. NO MATTER WHAT THE #s SAY ON THE HARDWARE OR THE PACKAGE 400&800 FIREWIRE HAS A MUCH FASTER TRANSFER RATE THAN ANY USB CONNECTION BUT 800 FIREWIRE BLOWS THEM ALL OUT OF THE WATER HAND DOWN. THIS CARD ALSO COMES IN PCI EXPRESS AND 64 BIT EDITIONS. THANKS SIIG AND THANKS NEWEGG

Cons: NONE WITH THIS PRODUCT

Other Thoughts: YOU CAN CONVERT YOUR INTERNALS TO 800 FIREWIRE BUT YOU CANNOT BOOT AN OPERATING SYSTEM FROM 800 FIREWIRE. I HOPE THEY COME OUT WITH A FLASHDRIVE THAT IS 800 FIREWIRE. WHOEVER DOES THIS FIRST WILL CLEAN UP BECAUSE USB IS JUST TOO SLOW
