4 out of 5 eggsFAST good quality PCIe-to-USB3 adapter, but priced too high

Pros: The adapter works very well running at USB3 speeds for me, so I'm not sure what the issue is/was for the other reviewer from 1/14/12, but I've had no problem at all getting it to run as fast as expected (see ATTO Disk Benchmark Write/Read scores in Other Thoughts...).

I like the ability to provide additional power to the USB3 ports via the cards SATA power port, but you will need to buy a molex-to-sata extension (if you don't have an extra available sata power plug) or use one of your PSU's sata power plugs to utilize it. In my case, to put it into a HP 8000 Elite SFF (with limited power attachments off of the PSU) I also had to use a one-to-two sata power splitter cable to create an additional sata power connector coming off of the PSU.

Cons: Price. It is easy to set up and install, and it works very well, but, for what it is, it should be $25-$30 or less including free shipping and not $40 with $7 shipping (total $47)....so for that, -1 Egg. If it were $25-$30 including shipping, it would easily be a 5 Egger, and I would buy more of these and use them routinely to upgrade PC's with older technology (like the HP dc7900 or 8000 Elite series).

SIIG, NewEgg AND ShopRunner - You guys all three need to get on the ball here and get this within reach - adapter price and shipping - of regular (and irregular) Geeks who could justify routine use of this in both older (non-USB3) as well as newer (but non-USB3) tech if the price was closer to the Earth's surface. Your window of opportunity is closing the more you wait - more and more mobos and PC's coming with USB3 ports and USB3 headers...don't wait too long and miss the opportunity!

Other Thoughts: I used a Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA 3 (6 Gbps) drive with 16mb cache (the WD5000AAKX) and the StarTech USB3S2SATA SuperSpeed USB 3.0 SATA Adapter with a USB3 cable to run the test. I ran 3 configurations - ALL three configurations (1 Internal & 2 External) had in common a HP 8000 Elite SFF PC with a LGA775 mobo and the WD Caviar Blue HDD. The two EXTERNAL configurations had in common a StarTech USB3 Adapter and USB3 cable with one EXTL configuration using a USB3 port on this SIIG 2-port PCIe host adapter and the other EXTL using a USB2 port on the HP 8000 Elite SFF front panel.

ATTO Disk Benchmark Scores (I'll just give the R/W for 8192kb transfer size, but from 64kb-8192kb the scores were essentially the same):

[1] Internal HDD (sata2 @ 3 Gbps) - R=132,669 / W=129,888 mbps
[2] External via SIIG USB3 port - R=122,573 / W=87,296 mbps
[3] External via PC's USB2 port - R=34,636 / W= 30,263 mbps

Not too bad for a PCIe adapter card, I'd say, and clearly better than

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't Work

Pros: None! doesn't work. transfer rate is 38mbps which is usb2 speed.

Cons: Replaced it twice. Downloaded the latest driver and when external drive is plugged in I get a balloon that states "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 Port" Support was not helpfull either...to much run around.
